just checked the FLRant - they are melting as hard at the prospect of getting Sumrall as we are for not getting him

Ya their last G5 hire didn’t go so well

I said early on that with all the other schools hiring we were not gonna make a splash hire. I don’t care if it’s Durkin, Jimbo, Bill Clark or Charles Kelly. Just don’t overpay and leave us a reasonable buyout if it goes to hell in 2-3 years. I would not want to pay a Sumrall 10million/yr with a buyout north of 25 million after year 3

And it is wild that it wasn’t that long ago there was a sizable bunch here melting at the thought of getting him
I do think $10M for him is pretty ludicrous.

Imagine letting a bunch of dumbass players who haven't produced a single meaningful win in 3 years dictate and guide your HEAD COACHING search .
Even Cole Cubelic said this weeks ago. He said you cannot let the players dictate your decision because they are emotional kids. He even said that he was afraid Cohen would over think this.
Cohen drug his feet and didn't nail this down. He had weeks and it seems like we are going to get screwed. Auburn is a laughing stock.
Fire his arse!!!

Yeah, I wanted sumrall but if that’s the number I see how it’s a no go. Let Florida overpay.

I am melting because, sadly, it is completely believable that we stopped looking for other options and are now likely to be left with our dick in our hands.
The idea that DJ is an acceptable backup is insanity.

I never thought they would go for it. Maybe they'll stop the steele...

Oh look, we should have hired Franklin
Edit
We have been a mess for a decade, and this just put the nail in our coffin. We absolutely need to overpay for Dilly now.

Hell, let’s go get Chesney and give him a chance.

At this point, give me Muschamp.
At least he will yell and curse more than me.

Agreed
We better be paying Durkin 5mil with no buyout if we keep him

Sumrall signed an MOU Wednesday night.
From my understanding Cohen then went ahead and offered Durkin AHC and DC with a raise.
Sumrall wanted the opportunity to Interview candidates for dc, but he was likely going to retain DJD anyway. Cohen basically took that option from him though.
If this is true that is a fireable offense. What coach would want to work for an AD that would pull a stunt like that?
And I thought Green was bad. Cohen is a disaster.

Yeah, it is rather amusing to see the switch around. Though I think that has more to do with the idea we will hire Durkin than lose out on Sumrall for most people.
And 10 mil for Sumrall is ridiculous. At that kind of price I'd rather see us go after a good up and coming OC or DC somewhere.

Yes, we should have. Apparently, VT’s recruiting was around 114 when he was hired. Now? It’s in the top 25.

We're going to end up paying 10+. The market has been reset. We're not going to bargain shop our way to a title. Even if we get Durkin cheap, it won't last long if he's successful.

So we're going to hire someone who was horrible as a head coach and who has only one top-30 defense in the last decade because we can't find anyone better? What is happening here, do we not have anyone left in the athletic department who cares at all about this program anymore?
How does Cohen still have a job at this point? He ruined our recruiting this year and now he's ruined our coaching search!

Damn. 9-10 million for a G5 HC is a joke
I accept that players and coaches are worth what someone is willing to pay. Is Juan Soto “worth” $800 million dollars? Yes. Why? Because that’s what Steve Cohen was willing to pay him.
Now of course, 15 years from now we can do a retro analysis to see if the Mets really got value out of that investment, based on Soto’s stats and how many WS Championships (if any) the Mets won with Soto on the team. But for now, he’s worth what the Mets are willing to pay him.
Is Sumrall “worth” 9-10 million? Well, he’s worth what someone is willing to pay him. We will know in about 10-15 years if the school got value for its money.
If Auburn is going to put a cap on how much they’re willing to pay for a coach, so be it. But what you’ve been seeing the last 5-6 seasons is what you’re going to see until Auburn both is willing to pay any price necessary and picks the right guy to pay that money to.
