I didn't even realize he was still coaching. His defense was outdated back in 2010

Glad to see the “alignment” set up for roof to get the job.

ETA: in all seriousness, The OU DC position is a prime spot to have a young hotshot recruiter fill it… the defense will basically be Venerables (this is what saban did in 2007 with smart). Hiring roof makes zero sense.

Hope they are ready for some "Bend but Break" defense.

Roof is a good DC. Every Wednesday night or Thursday morning, Chizik would come into the defensive meetings and completely change what Roof had been practicing during the week. Schematically Chizik and Roof were completely different and I often wonder why Roof was hired. Anyway, these changes happened most weeks of Roof's seasons as AU DC. In the second half we'd usually make great halftime "adjustments" which were usually reverting back to what Roof had been practicing during the week.

This. Amazing how many of you are openly willing to admit you know nothing about college football outside of Auburn

He was known as the "Leaky Roof D" long before he got to Auburn. He is a middling DC, at best. His career has been a year or two stops. His longest tenure is four years. There is a reason for this.

Does it really matter who is DC?

Isn't Venebles the DC defacto anyway?

Roof is going to run what Venables wants, and during the game it will be Venables approving of in game defensive adjustments.

Same thing that happens a lot on offense, and it is looking like this is the way Harsin might be going on offense. He will call the plays but hire an OC, who is a good recruiter and knows how to plan nad prep the offense.

It matters bc you’re hiring a mediocre coach who’s well past his prime (similar to harsin and bobo).

Yeah, I would say Venables just found him a guy he trusts to put the defense out there he wants and call it like he wants.

I think Roof was an ok DC, it was just that he and Chiz were from the old Tampa2 school and everyone had started figuring that out about the time they came to Auburn.

Dude has a BCSCG ring. He was good enough in 2010, and I’ll be forever grateful

This is false.

Roof runs multiple fronts (3-4, Okie, Bear & some 4-man), lots of stunts and runs a ton of cover 3 in the secondary. He also runs a bunch of zone blitzes where he'll have a DE or DT drop into the short zone and blitz LBs or safteys. He runs other pressures and exotic blitzes as well. Chizik was straight cover 2, mostly 4-3, and no stunts. His blitzes were blitzing a LB and a corner every once in a while. Chizik would come in mid-week and vanilla everything down, then AU would make halftime "adjustments" back to Roof's stuff. Roof and Chizik are the polar oppisite in terms of philosophy, and the results showed as we averaged giving up in the mid-20's when Roof was the AU DC. As I said earlier, I wondered at the time why he was hired if Chizik wasn't going to let him run the D, because they couldn't be any more different.

Having said all that, IDK what Burnt Vegtables did at Clemson and Oklahoma in terms of pressure, but there is little doubt Roof will be more aligned philosophically at OU than he ever was under Chizik.

(edit) Both of the Stoops brothers and Bob when was a DC ran a bunch of multiple fronts, cover 3 and pressure, and since Burnt Vegtables coached with the Stoops' he probably does the same. So given Roof's similar background and schemes this is probably a really good fit.

Fun fact, this will be the 5th school he’s coached at in the past five years. Talk about an uninspiring hire. Just a yes man for Venables.

It sounds like he was a player or position coach. If that’s the case, he probably knows quite a bit about college football.
