Watched his highlight film. Man, he is super athletic to be that tall and gangly. Dude can shoot!

B-ball notes from Pearl:
- Sharife is ahead of where Harper was at the same time point in college. Noted that he’s “not Harper yet, though”
- Says Moore at 6-6,240 can play the 2-5. Loves that versatility
- Thinks Cardwell could be the steal of the class. Very athletic, has some shooting and handling ability
- Akingbola and Cardwell will both need to be shooters and thinks they get there in time. Says the offense is hard to guard when everyone can hit from 3 (GenesChin)
- Jaylin Williams is putting some separation between himself and the next man up around his position. Sounds like he’s having a great off season

Thanks for the notes.
After seeing Jaylin Williams play more towards the end of the season, you could tell he had ability. He was just not cutting loose partly probably because he was getting used to playing more and knowing his role.

Someone ask him what position Thor plays (2-4?) and can we expect early PT from him?
Thor seems like a 4 to me but I've heard everything from 2-5 and it doesn't seem right.

Thor is a forward. 3 or 4, probably depends on who is on the court with him.
He’s also like 17 so not sure how much we’ll really learn about him this season

He seems to be way too upright to guard the 2 or 3 in the SEC. And I'm thinking his body might not be ready to guard SEC 5's.

Auburn HC Bruce Pearl says that SG Jamal Johnson has improved more than anyone else on the roster this offseason.
Pearl mentioned virtually every part of his game as somewhere where he's taken a step forward.

Bruce Pearl on Justin Powell: "He's done well. He was originally recruited to be an off-guard... but we're allowing him to compete with Sharife Cooper, Tyrell Jones and maybe another player or two" at point guard.
Has more ball-handling, play-making ability than BP first thought

Auburn HC Bruce Pearl says he thinks that the Tigers will probably go nine or 10 deep this season.

Did anybody listen to J-Boy today? He supposedly asked Jabari Smith if the G-League had a chance with him.

Nvm, the episode drops Tuesday.

March Madness to return to Birmingham
Has this been discussed yet? How awesome would it be to have Auburn in a first round tournament game in B'ham?

I saw it but don’t think it’s been talked about here. Really excited though. Will likely go to some games even if it’s not Auburn.

SG Jamal Johnson
All we need from his role, is to take and make timely 3’s and not be a defensive liability.

Justin Powell
Really excited about this kid. Seems to have all the tools to be a great all-around player and might be the best shooter on the team, along with Johnson and Cambridge. He can stroke it and has a ton of range.

It’s hard to get a read on who the few will be that won’t be in the rotation. We are as deep as it gets. I’m thinking Franklin and
PG- Cooper, Jones, Powell
SG- Flanagan/Johnson, Powell, Jones
SF- Cambridge/Flanagan, Powell/Moore
PF- JWill, Moore/Thor, Franklin
C- Akingbola, Thor/Cardwell
Does that look about right? Who sits early? Franklin and ? I imagine BP will bring Thor along slowly, like he did with JWill last year?

This is what I have seen mentioned
Cooper/Powell
Flanigan/turbo/Johnson
Cambridge/moore
Jaylin/Thor
Stretch/Cardwell

I think Turbo will ultimately backup Cooper at Point and I think Turbo will be much improved from last season. Turbo won’t see much action at 2 because Flanagan and Johnson will get most of the minutes at that 2 spot, with Powell sprinkled in at times. Also, Flanagan will play a lot more 3 than Moore will.
I know you’re just mentioning what others have said and I’m not criticizing your view or interpretation, I’m just offering my take. I appreciate the reply. I know we’re going to be young but I’m really stoked about this group and think by the end of the season, will be a handful to deal with. Great balance on both ends of the court.

That would be the best but what I’ve heard reporters mention that powell is actually pushing Cooper and turbo no where in the picture really for the 1.
Where’s the Bowers point forward when we need it? Lol

Real (!) Bruce Pearl quotes on Justin Powell:
quote:
He's got a really high basketball IQ.
quote:
He is a self-made player.

Ok. You lost me. I don’t get it. I may just be dense.

If that is the case, then he won’t be in the regular rotation and wouldn’t be surprised if he transfers. He doesn’t have a clear path at playing time at the 2 with Flanagan and Johnson. He is the backup at PG or bust, IMO.
