47 portal TEs but no starting DE. I really love the way we are building the roster.

Jared Smith is our starting DE

Jared Smith will play the 5 tech and Buck this year. So he’s our top guy at each spot. Darrion Smith will play the 5. Little Faulk will play the Buck along with the transfer. Many of the Bucks will moonlight at the 5 in different packages so we aren’t really that short on numbers we just don’t have that proven speed rusher. It’s not like we didn’t try to get an elite Buck.

You can call it an edge or buck or any other name.. its still a DE. Jared Smith is good but that is one side, there's no starter for the other side.

I'm pissed we missed out on the North Carolina guy.... but I've heard D.Smith is Really talented. Pretty much from the moment he showed up ion campus. Depth not the talent of our starting lineup is what bothers me.

They clearly have starters in mind, regardless of whether or not anyone here agrees with them. They didn't "forget" to look at the depth chart and haven't noticed that they "don't have a starting DE".

I'm just here for the advertised shooter sleeves
Xavier Atkins really smothered, covered, and topped him there

If they put patches on count me in the group wanting the AD fired and I won't buy a single piece of merch until its gone. frick that dumb sellout bullshite.

Well the 5 tech (defensive end) and Buck are 2 totally different positions it yeah they both play on the end of the defensive line in most situations. The Buck also plays off ball sometimes. The 5 tech (DE) also moves down to a 4I spot as well. So definitely need different type players and bodies at each position. I would love to add an elite pass rushing Buck and 2 interior DL that are seniors that have played tons of ball but those are hard to find.
Maybe Dallas Walker can be one of those inside guys but I doubt he gets the waiver for another year. All we can do as try

Maybe one of those TEs is a Jay Ratliff.

Corch DEs we're dropping into coverage long before they came up with a fancy name for it. Its no different than the star position for me.. We've had nickle and dime players forever, its just a different name.

It’s the way of the future or at least for now. Might as well accept it now. FWIW I’m glad we have options at TE this year and between Jared and Womack plus others I’m okay to fair at that position.

You want a starting de right? This'll help. Sucks but it is what it is. You can't be the only school not doing and expect to compete.

I don’t care if they get tattoos on their foreheads if it brings a natty

I know that but the “DE” and “Buck” in our system has totally different responsibilities within the framework of the defense.
In Wayne Hall’s old 4-3 yes the DEs did the exact same thing on each side of the ball.
We run an odd front (3 man front) with a DE (5 tech/4I) NT (0 tech/shade 1) and a DT (3 Tech/4I). We sometimes bring the Buck (7 tech/OLB) on to the line of scrimmage. The Buck is very multiple that they can be in a 3 or 4 point stance playing like a traditional DE but can stand up 2 point stance all on the line of scrimmage and either seal the edge, rush the passer or drop into coverage. The Buck can also be a standup outside linebacker and like up in a 3-3-5 look in our defense. So in our defense the “Buck” is more of an OLB than DE. But can be played by DE or OLB depending on what the play call is intended to do from the position.
Thats why I said give me all the guys we can get from 6’2” - 6’6” from 230-300 lbs because of the multiple places they can play. TE, QB, OT, DE, LB, heck even running back in some situations

Darrion Smith will be the DE along with Buddy Mathis. Probably Siglar some too.
