But he is very in demand.

As a DC, nobody wants him for HC except maybe UAB or something like that

Sometimes it's best to be conservative and let others be guinea pigs.

Nobody knows anything about how a change at a large school will end up in terms of roster etc.

That’s what you need. A guy that understands offenses and defenses and can run multiple looks and styles and just adjust to the game. I’ve become leary of OCs that are married to a system. What do they do when their system gets shut down?

Based on reactions, I guess it’s gonna be Jimbo.

Jimbos record is not terrible.

He ran a dynasty at FSU into the ground.

You see how much better A&M is under Elko.

Jimbo is a fraud.............and hiring him would be the most Auburn thing evar.

Yeah, I don't like him. But FSU had major financial issues at the time and refused to pay for facility upgrades and assistant coaches. They had the expectation from Bowden that it was a privilege to coach at FSU and you should take less money. It is not all black and white.

No one cares about PR anymore. It's such a joke. The media doesn't get to decide who a person is or isn't. Should be pretty easy to get or know the facts of a case like what happened in Maryland and I'm gonna guess that due diligence was already done before he was hired as DC

Yep all this Jimbo talk cracks me UP

Might as well go get Terry Bowden to come with him - LOL

The information is out there on Durkin, I don't think there are many open questions or mysteries.

I also think that unlike Freeze or others, you can watch and listen to Durkin and discern he's probably a pretty disciplined, straightforward individual and not a fake. I'm not saying Hugh is/isn't, I'm just saying his demeanor/conduct doesn't give you much conclusive insight into it. If someone says he strikes him as a sleazy southern fake pastor, I can't necessarily argue with that impression even if I don't think it's accurate.

Ok, let’s forget about the bad press. How about we concentrate on that he was a shite HC?

Right. I don't get this. It seems a huge portion of the fan base doesn't even want a coaching search. They don't want us to go out and try to big boy a legit coach for whatever bizarre reason.

They're just high on the idea that we have a great defense and a lot of talent already, so if you promote Durkin then he keeps the roster together on that side of the field at least so there is a chance for a quick turnaround to wins if he can hire a legit offensive staff.

Its not a stupid thought, but I wouldn't leverage a multi-year commitment on a HC just to retain the roster and increase the likelihood of winning next season.

I dont see anyone saying that. Just DJ is a better fallback option than Sumrall, etc.

The rhetoric around here today seems like people are looking at him more than just a fallback.

I can't get the image of chizik out of my mind when I look at him tho.

To metas point, get him an oc and a qb and an o line coach, keep the roster, and I can see us doing damage next year, but what does it look like after that? Can he sustain it? Idk

I still like the idea of getting Schumann and retaining dj more. Let's go get our sean mcvay. Let's rectify skipping on Kirby the first go round. Let's get a guy that knows nothing but the Saban and Smart system. Best coaching hire in Auburn history followed that logic. Let's try to do something that's worked before instead of complicating it.

If Dj is our fallback this go around I would be more excited for him than I was Freeze. But we've got to do some legwork here.

I do. Dan Lanning at top of my list. You have to make him say no about 10 times.

Do you think DJ would work for a guy with less experience as a HC and DC then him? DJ is a top 3ish DC in the country, mind you.

I think there is a fear that if he leaves it will somehow get much worse.

I don't have an issue with this being his audition as a backup if we strike out on top tier candidates --- but I agree with you in that I think the fear of getting worse and losing the players is not enough for Durkin to be the recipient of a knee jerk hire.

The support for Durkin as head coach appears to be driven by the hope that his promotion will maintain our strong defense.

But there is no history to suggest that, in fact the opposite.

When Durkin was the head coach at Maryland, their defense was atrocious.

Maryland's average ranking in total defense in his 3 years was 76th.

If we promote Durkin to head coach, we're removing him from the position that he does well, and putting him in a position where he was previously awful.

New stuff from Cohen makes me think he wants to go big hire.

Bring Gus in as OC, keep Lil Durk

And bring in drink/Summerall as HC. Just fork out all of the money.
