i think many if us have been deliberately blind to the fact that firing Malzahn when we did was the mortal blow, not the hiring of the meathead who replaced him

of course its easier to see in hindsight, not knowing that the chaos of NIL/free agency would begin in earnest prior to the next season, but dismissing a modestly successful HC (overlooking his miserable road record against our chief rivals) at the end of one of the weirdest seasons in the history of the sport was not only a huge unforced error by our braindead GOBs, it was extremely expensive to boot

we should have listened to those wise voices (looking at you, Lanier) who warned us of the potential damage from that now obvious colossal blunder

i questioned the timing as i recall, but agreed we needed a change - i can freely admit i was dead wrong

Face it, you all bought into the hype….without a down having been played.

I see shades of Bo Nix, take the snap, then run like hell.

No running backs behind this line. Pass routes slowly develop. Defense missing from last year.

thats precisely the kind of thinking that got us where we are today

i agree that we were declining under Gustav - but firing him when we did was a massive mistake

and everything bad that’s happened to the program since then has flowed from that one awful decision

This isn’t worse than what I think.

I posted last night we have switched spots with ole Miss and miss state. We have become that bad. We no longer are a team our rivals hate to play. We no longer enjoy a home advantage that gives us an automatic 7 point advantage. Not gonna lie, it hurts.

This is correct.

A lot of us look back at the Gus years with orange and blue tinted glasses, and he did have some big wins early. But, he also had some ugly losses. Remember when he trotted Sean White out against UGA with a shoulder so bad that he couldn’t throw when he had unhurt QBs on the sideline? Remember his insistence of running up the middle on first down again and again?

Gus’ fatal flaw was his belief that he was always the smartest guy in the room. He refused to adjust his offense, even when opposing coaches were correctly predicting the play on the sideline based on the personnel on the field.

Rule changes and DC familiarity with his offense were his undoing, along with his insistence of recruiting drop back passers for his zone read offense. He also couldn’t get a high school offensive lineman to sign with us because other teams negatively recruited against us and said that his offense didn’t prepare them for the NFL.

Through all this, he refused to adapt. He believed that if his offense ran his play call to perfection, no defense could stop it.

He was a good coach and is a good man, but our decline began in his later years and has increased to a free fall since he left.

Should he have gotten a mulligan after 2020? Maybe. Would he have changed anything? Doubtful…

And yet everyone here acts like AU football is top tier and lose their shite if every single thing isnt perfect, because muh 2010 and 2013.

Most of my entire life Auburn football was 8-9 wins during peak years. And lucky to make a bowl game every other year.

You can DEMAND results all you want. You can whine and cry and say fire everyone every 3 years like you have with everyone since tuberville. Even during the fear the thumb years most of you had the same mentality.....Nobody knows what theyre doing, coaches suck. AD sucks, wah wah wah wah.

At the end of the day, the program has never been top tier, and it never will be because no one will ever be allowed to build the program thanks to the "fanbase"

Keep demanding 10+ wins from people and ignore the fact that its happened 10 times in the past 40 years.

When they do have a few years of 10+ wins, bitch anyway about how its not enough and " can be better"

But your take is hot garbage. Yes Auburn has been an 8-9 win team but most of its history was in a 10 game schedule.

Auburn isn’t a top 5 team or brand but you damn well know it’s a Top 10-12 program in its history. That’s elite brother. And while also considered to have played the most difficult schedule year over year throughout its history. The last 7-8 years doesn’t take away from what Auburn is.

I think Golesh is a pretty good coach he hasn’t gone up against the best of the best week after week. I had no expectations really of this team other than to be really really good at linebacker. I thought the DL would be a hair better. I knew we were gonna take a big hit in the DB room.

Yall crapping on Durkin is insane. He’s had what 2 subpar games the past 2 seasons Vandy and last night. Hell I don’t know UF looks pretty damn solid to me. Granted we tackled very poorly and helped them a lot.

I knew the offense was going to be a work in progress because of pure lack of true sec type talent. Brown has started each game about as bad as you can start them. He hits his stride around the 2nd quarter and we are able to move the ball.

We are where we are. But we need to be getting 4-5 elite talent in big school recruiting and filling in the others in the class with good players.

But this falls on the athletic department and donors/boosters. Going forward are we gonna penny pinch and spend around 10th or 11th in money to players or are we gonna spent money to get us in the Top 5 of the SEC in spending. Until that happens it is what it is. Our NIL collective is a joke. I was once a member and contributor. We barely have 3000 members. Even shite history schools like Ole Miss have over 15000 in their NIL collective.

It’s pro football and if you don’t want to spend with your “equals” then you will lose to them.

Granted last years talent level was top 7ish in the conference and we still shite the bed.

I can say as a never NFL fan I didn’t like it one because I didn’t like players moving around to different teams and players making 30 million a season. And now that’s what big time college football is and I’m losing interest each day. I will always be an Auburn fan but college athletics is a mockery of what college sports are supposed to be about.
