If they are going to make a move this year, I think it is because they know who the next head coach will be. I don't think they dish out all the $$$ and then go into the unknown of a coaching search.

The fact that Venables hasn’t already taken a head coaching position concerns me

It is because he is waiting for his alma mater Kansas St to open up.

That or waiting for Dabo Swinney to take the Bama job so he steps into a great Clemson situation

I agree I hope we drop the notion that Auburn hires and fires people quickly. Gus got 6 years. Before Chizik we had only 3 coaches from 1981-2008. That's pretty good.

That would be such a big hire for them. Would be great for that program.

People keep hinting there is something wrong with Venables but it's not really discussed in detail. Best I can tell the allegation is that he's somewhat of a dullard.

People have mentioned on the Bunker that Venables might have domestic abuse allegations skeletons in his closet. I have no way of knowing if that’s true. Just passing along what I’ve seen over there.

I've said this before, but Having Kiffin as the coach is kinda like dating a super crazy hot chick. It's going to incredible for a while and you'd probably have more fun than you have ever had. When it goes sideways, you're going to feel like you just got your arse kicked and you'll have the scars to prove it. You'll still think about her, though.

I think I'd take the chance and enjoy the ride. Let future me pay the price, present me can party.

Thats fair....

But a lot of the stuff against him can be chalked up to youthful immaturity and being put in situations that he wasn't ready to handle. I think he's kept his nose clean for 4 solid years now. He's more 'proven' than some other coordinators that make the jump to HC....

I'd be happy to see what a 43 year old Kiffin with the RIGHT CONTRACT.

give me one piece of evidence that Bill Clark, Neal Brown, Bret Venables, Mel Tucker or any up and comer will be a a great HC.

No up and coming HC will be a guaranteed success. but its a risk one has to take

wish as folks may, wish as folks might Peterson, Kelly. Petrino. Franklin. Stoops. etc aren't walking through that door

All of this. Especially the RIGHT CONTRACT. Make it heavily performance based.

If Kiffin didn't antagonize Bama would anyone be touting him as an option?

A good season at a far lesser school and a short great stint as a coordinator at a loaded program is just really, really thin.

Particularly when it's accompanied by at least some evidence that he wasn't a great program manager when in comparably large gigs.

I don't think he is an option because I want him. He wouldn't be my first choice. However, I do believe if we actually fire Gus, he will get a look by the suits.

Son Of Monte Kiffin he has grown up in it. Ever heard of the Tampa 2?

Responsible for some of the best offenses college football has ever seen while at USC

He's worked with Pete Carrol, Nick Saban, Norm Chow, Jeff Tedford, Tom Cable, Clay Helton, Steve Sark

He done exceptionally well as HC at USC. Keep in mind they were on probation, and had a ton of players leave out. The NCAA granted immediate transfers following the Pete Carrol debacle so USC played with 70 scholarship players instead of 85 and some of those 70 were redshirts.

In his 2nd year at USC he went 10-2. One of the losses was in triple OT to Andrew Lucks Stanford Team.

He won 8 games in his first year despite all the star players transferring

Overall 25-12 at USC in a time when the Pac-12 was actually good while on probation.

Check out some of USCs scores from that time frame. You'll see a lot of 49-10, 42-17, 50-3, 38-14

Who does that remind you of? Why do you think Saban hired Kiffin. Saban knew the game was changing and knew he could lead the charge with an explosive offense. He used Kiffin to lay the groundwork then got rid of him when he had the blueprint.

He won 10 games at FAU last year despite them being a doormat for the last 10 years. They'll probably win 8 or 9 games this year.

I see a lot of people saying we need a more conservative approach but IMO Kiffin is the safest hire out there right now. You are guaranteed good recruiting, a great staff, good offense, and winning.

The risky hires are the coordinators and lower conference / division coaches I see some people throwing around. You don't know if those guys can recruit or what kind of staff you'll get.

Same question re: the suits, though.

I'd like to say they're more sensible than we're giving them credit for and there is no way they'd chase a coach just because he's the anti-Saban, but...
