I have no idea why AU signed this kid.
I do. He was signed after the Offensive guru missed on everyone else

guess the transfer portal makes it easier to leave IF you don’t want to be in the program.
Yep, and teams and fans better get used to players leaving for a myriad of reasons.

We needed depth after taking Gatewood and Nix in consecutive classes. Gus knew someone would leave in that dynamic

I played at the DII level. I can tell you over the course of my years every 110 man roster was full of 60 or so guys who believed they were being screwed by the coaching staff. The transfer portal is going to make it easy for that mindset to flourish. I can also say in my 40 plus years of watching and playing CFB that a kid transferring found success less than 10% of the time.

Agree with this, the portal is going to be bad for student athletes

The portal will end up hurting bama, Clemson and UGA more in the end. Can’t lie to kids about PT anymore. Those kids will look to transfer out those stacked teams.

I actually think it will benefit them more. I think they’ll trim their dead weight easier and successful players at smaller schools will be looking to get a chance at a large program.

I would not bet on this.
I’m sure “the process” has been updated to reflect the portal.
Saban: “let’s get you to college where you can get on the field early. If we like your tape, we can bring you in as a transfer.”

Really they just got a really good WR from Ohio State, their center last year was a transfer from FSU (might have been a grad transfer) but I dont think it hurts them. It gives coaches an easier way to process players.

After all, what percentage of all CFB players find “success”, whatever the definition, whether they transfer out of their original program or not?
In the end, if we trust kids fresh out of highschool with their initial collegiate choices, what right do we have to criticize them when they decide that their choice isn’t working out and they want to try someplace different?
Bottom line, if a school is not bound to keep a kid on scholly for a full four years, then the kid should have the same freedom to pursue other opportunities.

Nothing to see here.. sunshine and rainbows. Who needs safetys anyway?
I'm sure this means we take the guy from Vandy.. which means we will have spent 2 of our 4 transfers spots on DBs while not getting a single one yet for RB, WR, OL, DL, or QB (Jason Caldwell speculated yesterday that we might try to get one of those now too). This is after we have a deep, young and talented secondary returning.

I honestly think that is very hard to calculate. You have to consider how well they would have done if they stayed and compare that to the success that they had once they transferred. One is a unknown actually....
But I do get your sentiment. Sometimes it is a pipe dream of the player but many have been very successful after transferring...

You don't think this is by design and initiated by the staff? The four that left went through all off-season and through spring training then all of a sudden decide to hit the portal? I think of the two options, Harsin telling these players to hit the road vis a vis "I don't see playing time for you here..." seems to be the most likely and logical option.
I don't know what their plan is for roster management but I'll leave it to the staff to figure it out before I start acting like a Doug Barfield AU Fan. What I would imagine the staff did - just like you see on 'Hard Knocks' - is they met as a staff, probably over several days. They collectively decided who they needed, who was and wasn't buying in, and came up with the players they are culling.

Not really.
He is just calculating how much success they had after transferring. It is not a comparison between original school and transfer school. You absolutely can see if he was successful after transferring.
What I would question would be how he came across the 10%. I agree it's probably a low success rate, but less than 10% seems drastically low.

This would be a great research paper because you would have a robust data-set and could set up rules-based "success" factors. I'm going to look to see if one exists.

Thompson was good enough to get PT as a freshman.. everyone around the program was high on him and he was considered a future started. If thats changed after a few months and these new coaches don't think he can play.. thats on them imo.
We have too many needs to be chasing after DB transfers. We should have been focused on keeping the guys we had at certain postions so that we could fill needs.
Its looks like we will have 2 spots to fill RB, OL, WR, DL, and maybe QB.. tell me how thats good roster management? No matter what we do now we're going into the season with a big whole somewhere because they couldn't hang on to guys already in the program.

Losing Thompson stings personally more than the other two.
We might as well expect a slow rebuild and flush excitement down the toilet for a while.

we have at least 3 spots with Garrett transferring too. Doesnt make sense to go after QB, Bo is the starter and their is depth behind him, go after a HS QB. RB we are thin but have good to great RBs. OL and WR is were we need the most help.
