I just listened to it this afternoon.

And he said something to the effect that “Jake had a good run play called” and he said no we are going to throw the fade to Fairweather because he has seen him execute that in practice.

So who is calling plays, Monty, Freeze, and Thornton.

My first negative post about Freeze but that comment is concerning. Maybe Thornton is the run game coordinator and suggests run plays but way to many hands in the cookie jar

You cant possibly not believe they are discussing plays on the head sets. He may not be actually "Calling" the plays but they are constantly discussing what they are going to do

Do you think that Nick Saban totally turns his defense over to the coord with no input?

They are all talking about what they are going to do

Freeze said Montgomery will call plays but he might step in from time to time. So, yeah, on a critical play I am sure Freeze makes the calls.

Freeze made it perfectly clear that he will call plays at times. Hell, he said he will take over series wanting to see how the D reacts to the play calls/sets.

I know coaches discuss things on the headset my God. It’s a question of who is calling the damn plays. Those discussions between position
Coaches should be done in between series or during time outs.

For example an OL coach might say when number XX comes in he’s weak to hold his spot at the attack. Or Britton has been whipping his guy everyone we run zone.

Everybody knows Jimmy Ranes is calling the offense and Harbert is calling the defense.

Play call was changed to pass because single coverage was discovered

Don’t you claim to be an ex-player or coach or something and you don’t know the answer to this?

Yes that's why I said Thornton should not be in the call play decision in between plays. Freeze/Montgomery sure.

It's not just Thornton, it would include Marcus and Ben as well, along with Caddy. They should be communicating after series and during time outs, not in the middle of play calling between plays.

I'm not sure why this is such an alien concept. Freeze yes he can override the play calls, he's the head man. Montgomery and Freeze are enough to decide what plays to call.

I may be missing something but on that touchdown didn't we put Robby in and then end up calling a timeout which is when Thorne came back on to throw the touchdown. So maybe they had a run play called, time out was called, they discussed it and changed to a pass play. Seems like maybe that's what Freeze was getting at or I could be wrong who knows

Yes. Robbie got subbed in late and we called a timeout to avoid a delay of game. Then, Thorne came in after the timeout and threw the TD.

Hugh Freeze said he called "three things" on offense during the Cal game, saying "it's hard" to give up play calling as he's done throughout the career.

Freeze points to turnovers, other mistakes to stopping momentum.

Freeze adds he called the TD pass to Rivaldo Fairweather.

I wouldn't sweat this. Partly depends on who is in the booth as well and what they're seeing. Wouldn't be surprised if it's Monty/Thornton discussing plays constantly with Freeze hopping on and off the offensive radio line depending on the situation. Often coaches will have certain things they're looking out for. Thornton may be watching the defensive line / LB personnel on a long drive and liked the matchup so suggested going designed run with Robby. In another situation someone may notice the defense is covering a RB with a defensive end out of a specific package and suggest a call based on that.

Wouldn't be at all weird if Monty/Thornton are sending Robby in for a goalline package. Thorne comes off and tells Freeze that Fairweather is the hot hand, he's going to get 1x1 with a particular DB, and they need to throw a fade. You can see Thorne and Hooks talking with Freeze as the timeout starts.

Freeze likes it, calls timeout to make sure they have the right play and he feels good about it, then we throw the fade.

At the college level coaches are relaying information constantly and getting feedback from players in the middle of drives and DURING plays even - at least it was like that when I played.
