Or - and this is just me spitballing here - Gus just doesn’t want guys with serious injury histories (as well as proven skill sets) putting their bodies on the line in practice with weeks left in the offseason.

That's kinda the point. Marcello's premise was bonkers because even Gus at his most paranoid would have to realize that having them sit out without non-contact jerseys would not be good deception.

I'm not saying I agree with it. I just thought it was interesting. If they aren't practicing I'm not sure why they wouldn't be in orange jerseys either though. And I doubt there are "spies", but its not unheard of either. But we also have closed practices so good luck getting in there to see anything.

Tega should rest if he’s really hurt. That blows my mind.

Don’t need Oregon spies. We have bammer spies yearly and they would gladly give Oregon info.

I’m confused as to why it was even brought up.

Orange non contact jerseys should only be worn by players practicing in some limited capacity.

Players sitting out on the sidelines shouldn’t need them. Unless tackling unaware players on the sidelines is a staple of the Gus Malzahn era.

Where are the reports from yesterday’s practice?

A question that was brought up on 247:
Do you think Joey seamlessly splitting time in HS could be a factor into the coaches possibly trying to do it again?

If so, my own question: would you want a two QB System that stretches beyond just a game or two and well into the season? And do you think Gus could pull it off?

Gus is an outside the box thinker. I think he probably could if his coaches keep him reeled in some. Don’t need Clemson 2016.

A 2 QB system is football’s version of communism which has likewise failed everywhere it was used.

Malzahn looking for offense to respond in 2nd scrimmage

Bryan Matthews • AuburnSports

quote:

AUBURN | Not long after Gus Malzahn watched the defense dominate Auburn’s first scrimmage of fall camp last Thursday, he was already challenging his offense to step it up in the next scrimmage.

“The key is the good offenses come back and the next time they respond and get it corrected,” said Malzahn.

The offenses’ first opportunity to strike back comes Wednesday morning in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

“They got the best of us no doubt today so we’re going to have to go back to the drawing board, watch film tonight and ultimately get ready to go and get the best of them next time because we don’t want to let them beat us twice in a row,” said offensive lineman Jack Driscoll last week.

Part of the problem in the first scrimmage, according to Malzahn, was the lack of execution on offense, which is not surprising considering the two freshmen quarterbacks rotating with the first team and a young and inexperienced group of skill players.

“All 11 guys have to be on the same page and they have to be doing the right thing and everything has to be clean,” Malzahn said. “Most plays, all 11 weren’t clean. It may have been nine and two not, and 10 and one, but when you’re playing a good defense, it’s gotta be 11.”

The wide receivers in particular had their share of struggles dropping passes including one deflection that was intercepted.

“Some things that we need to work on is catching in traffic,” wide receiver Marquis McClain said. “I think we saw that as a team when we watched film and that’s something we just need to continue to work on is catching in traffic, catching when we’re tired, running when we’re tired. I think most of the stuff that was in the scrimmage was a lot of mental more than physical.”

I <3 the analogy but Chris Leak/ Tebow still holds true. Not to mention Gatewood only knows a 2 QB system.

Quick update on injuries with estimated returns

LINK

Looks like most should be back by the end of camp for the season opener. Newkirk is definitely disappointing if he can't return. I was really hoping he would have a big year this year.

It's not as bad as a lot of the practice reports have made it seem. Schwartz and Newkirk are a concern. Miller I think should be good to go, may miss Oregon game, but he has been doing drills, just non-contact for now. I think similar to DJ Williams.

Just want to point out that Gatewood split reps with another QB in high school but it wasn’t much of a system. They alternated drives no matter what was going on in the game or which QB was playing better than the other

That list doesn’t bother me too much yet. We should get an update on injuries today which will clear up some of this.
