I don't think it has to be a case of not being able to make it.. If its really close and the coaches go with Nix because he's potentially a 4 year starter, or if they just favor him for whatever reason it doesn't mean Gatewood couldn't still be good in the offense. IE, Corey Grant couldn't get a shot at Bama but then transferred here and was good enough to make it to the NFL.

Have always thought Mullen could coach him up though.

Mullen would probably win a NC with him.

If he said that...I'd have to guess he has a pretty solid source suggesting it to him. In context if he said, "It wouldn't surprise me if..." then the quote that sounds more like PM. He hedges unless he has multiple sources.

He said it, but it was prefaced in a bigger article and he said including his guesses. His opinion.

My opinion is that Bo starts. Gatewood plays.

Apparently Gus was highly critical of a Nix low pass even though it resulted in a TD to Sal. That’s next level criticism and haven’t read anything like that about Gatewood.

Is this satire? One of the stupidest things I have read concerning the QB battle.

Gus also told Bo to get off the field after missing an easy pass.

Offseason Is Finally Over! Fall Camp DiscussionI mean its pretty much a guarantee that is Gatewood doesn't get the job he's going to transfer.

Gus will call enough wacky drive killing plays for Gatewood to keep him hanging around. Think of when Malik Willis would come in and run the read-option randomly. Gatewood however knows not to get sacked in the endzone on a read option.

So is it safe to say that the QB race is "day to day"?

Depends on who you ask. Some thought Bo would be named starter last week but the bad offensive scrimmage seemed to have changed that.

For all we know Mullen had a Gatewood clone in Nick Fitzgerald. They are both 6'5 230 lbs. and are incredible athletes running the ball. I don't know about any of you all, but I was never afraid to play a Nick Fitzgerald lead Miss State team. There was zero threat of pass with him. You stacked the box, and knew if you stopped the run, you were going to win. Which we did 2 out of 3 times against him. In his 3 starts against Auburn he went a combined 39/84 passing (46%) for 407 yards with 2 TD's and 2 INT's.

All I'm saying is great physical size and and running ability is awesome, but without a true passing threat you are going to be one dimensional and end up 8-4 and it won't make a difference whether Gus or Mullen is coaching him. I'm also not saying Gatewood can't be a threat passing the ball, but I literally don't think Gatewood has even attempted a pass in a college game to know one way or the other.

No surprise here, but 247’s projected depth chart released today has Bo as QB1

And then get diarrhea in your post. You, nor anyone else knows what the hell we have in Gatewood. Your attempt at making a comparison was pretty lame.

Let the best one play is all I want, but I want an offense that mimics 2010 and 2013/14.

This is shaping up to be a hell of a QB race! Good news for us (long term). However, it will be a LONG season with a true freshman at QB.

Amen.

Best guy for the system we have is all I hope for.

Honestly, we have not seen or even heard enough about how these guys are doing to really know who will be the starter. And given that both are untested, it could change or not even emerge during the Oregon game.

As long as the Oline does not regress to how it started last year, I have to think we have a better chance to let the new qb develop.

I just hope we clearly have the number one before we get to the A&M game. I think that one really is going to be predictive of the type of season this is, much more than the Oregon game.

$1 to this..

A lot of people are outright giddy with thoughts of Nix starting.

Most of the time.... True Freshman starting QB + toughest schedule in the nation = dumpster fire.

It's really damning on Malzahn that a true freshman qb is our best option 7 years into his tenure.

Nix may turn out to be the next Trevor Lawrence and I will gladly come back here and eat my words if so.

I mean, I don’t think it’s surprising that a 5-star QB with a fantastic dual threat skill set is pushing for the starting spot. Fromm did pretty well at UGA his freshman year.
