A much-needed facelift for Auburn's north end zone has been a hot topic for the athletic department for years. But it sounds like the concept is becoming closer to materializing, as John Cohen enters his second year as athletic director.

Cohen spoke extensively Thursday about the need for an upgrade on the north side of Jordan-Hare Stadium, including a new videoboard being "priority number one."

"We've had a lot of discussions about this," Cohen said on Tiger Talk, Auburn's in-house radio program. "We're working hard behind the scenes to create a plan. When does it happen? How long does it take once you start? ... We're putting all that together right now. These things don't happen overnight. ... We've got to address some things in the north end zone, and I'm very excited to have the opportunity to do that."

In 2017, Auburn's board of trustees approved a $6.3 million videoboard for Jordan-Hare Stadium's north end zone, which is the lowest of the four sides of the stadium and sits opposite a recently expanded south end zone and the jumbotron. But it was removed from the agenda and ultimately the university’s list of upcoming projects two months later by former Auburn president Steven Leath.

Back in 2015, the board proposed renovations to the north end zone, estimated at $145 million. The athletic department spent $100,000 on the planning process before former athletic director Jay Jacobs put the project “on hold” in 2016.

The previous football season was when Auburn unveiled what was then the largest video board in the country in the south end zone, valued at $13.9 million.

Speaking of Auburn's state-of-the-art jumbotron, Cohen said he's tired of watching Auburn students, who sit beneath it or just beside it in the student section, have to twist their necks around the entire game. If Auburn is going to make the efforts it does on video content for gamedays, fans sitting in the south should be able to look across the way and watch it on another large screen, Cohen thinks.
We've got to do better than that," Cohen said of students being unable to easily see a videoboard in their home stadium. "We have to. We're going to do that. We're going to design a state-of-the-art videoboard in the north end zone that's going to fit in with several premium areas of the north end zone."

Auburn had several architects and engineers accompany Cohen and his staffers to Arkansas last weekend, where they were able to tour DWR Razorback Stadium and jot down some ideas. Cohen said Auburn also has plans to check out Notre Dame's north end zone and Florida State's south end zone in the offseason.

"We're going to really observe this, we're going to make really good decisions, and we're going to move Auburn forward," Cohen said.
Jordan-Hare Stadium's most recent major renovation came ahead of the 2018 season, when the new recruiting center was opened outside the south end zone, along with the David E. Housel Press Box, the team’s locker room was expanded, and two additional levels of club space amenities and lounge spaces were added.

This season, thanks to the addition of some premium seating, Jordan-Hare Stadium's capacity was increased from 87,451 to 88,043.

Its not what I wanted either but sending our engineers and architects to Arkansas for brainstorming ideas is a sign of maturity.

His comments on tiger talk sounded promising. Had pretty good details on wanting the screen, levels of upper, club, lower, and even field level

They've done a lot of research already it seems like

Just wait for the "please donate for the north zone" fundraiser to go along with every other thing

I kinda like the look of the old school score board and would have liked to just refresh it with the old look to preserve the nostalgia.

North end zone one doesn’t need to be nearly as big. Hell, could keep the old school scoreboard, give it a face lift, and then put two smaller screens in the corners. Hopefully we don’t put just another massive screen over there. Won’t like that. The plans they had a few years back looked great IMO

Would add another big screen though. Could do that same design, keep the old school type scoreboard in the center there and do two smaller screens on the corners too. Plenty of options but the overall design looks very good to me. Hopefully something like this is the genera plan they are still working towards.

Cut the current monstrosity of the Jumbotron in half and put the other half on the north end zone for balance aesthetics.

It's not like there's a GAME going on right in front of them or anything.

I hate that monstrosity. I hope we use a bit more restraint this time. Of all the things needing money in Jordan Hare, I wouldn't put another video board anywhere near the top, but oh well.

I like the video board, and think it'd be nice for thos under the current video board. I've always wanted to know what jordan hard would look like with an enclosed upper deck

Because you never watch the jumbotron for anything.

Replays? Don’t need them. Keep your eyes on the field. Pre-game hype video? Absolutely not. Must keeps eyes on the field at all times.

No one watches the Jumbotron during the game you dolt. And if you ever watch the game from the student section, you understand the comment.

The Arkansas endzones are primarily priority seating, with climate controlled areas behind the seats with food, etc. I think their are 10 or so clubs. At the top is a huge area with, and bar. Cost them around 160 million, ours will cost more.

One of my main gripes with the megatron is that so much of real estate is covered up by crap like ads and other announcements during games and you have to search around for the useful stuff like stats which to me shows progress in different areas. So usually have to keep the ESPN app open and keep monitoring stats.

Like Weagle said the videoboard only cocks the students head to the side when there is a break in action. The students help set the magic in the stadium so I guess they deserve it.

The renovation project my picture was from was estimated at $145M in 2017/18 ish I think. So, $160M is probably pretty accurate to what it would be now. I think that project increased our capacity to like 90k, so not a big increase, just an upgrade. I really liked the project.

Because all of that certainly would put any reasonable 20-something in the ER with severe neck strain!

JH needs a massive aesthetic face life and expanded luxury seating before a video board, IMO.

Hopefully this isn't a sign that we're going to continue the recent trend of non-cohesive "upgrades" that involve new tech on an increasingly dilapidated venue or sticking up hip new bright orange signage on grime stained concrete

Just so they do NOT use the same firm the scabbed on the "press box" in the last upgrade. It looks horrible and is horrible.
