I can confirm the news by @mzenitz that Colorado DB coach Charles Kelly is expected to join Auburn's staff. The hire should be official soon after Auburn's bowl game. Kelly was in the running for the DC position last year.

More to come at LINK

Colorado defensive coordinator Charles Kelly is expected to leave the Buffs for a job on the defensive staff at Auburn, sources tell
@247Sports
Before Colorado, Kelly worked at Alabama and Tennessee and as a defensive coordinator at Florida State.

This is the biggest thing I've disagreed with Freeze on. Bringing on Kelly doesn't help us in any way.. old arse dude who is way past his prime. Sucked at his last few stops. No thanks.

Solid hire. Wonder if this is to replace Crime’s position as on field coach? Crime still staying on in the off field role?

Yes, its replacing Crime on the field. Haven't heard if he's sticking around off the field.

could be a temp gig for Kelly, keeping Crimedog’s seat warm for a year?

Bama recruits itself. Last time he earned his paycheck he was coaching LBs at FSU.

Hoke also said he still expects an OC change. Would be really weird timing imo.

I know nuance is lost on this board but he can be a great recruiter and be at a school that recruits well. He puts in the work on the trail and has relationships throughout the region.

I agree that he’s not the world’s best safeties coach.

Apparently we need one.

Dont want to conjure up the same Ashford vs Thorne discussion but there is no reason why 49%Ashford should be throwing more passes than Thorne through 12.

Kelly has deep roots with high school coaches all over the south. Solid recruiting coach solid defensive coach.

I think Crime is gonna take the Phillip Loley kind of role. Player personnel type position

That’s putting it lightly. He’s a fantastic recruiter.

This is the first time I've really disagreed with Freeze. I don't get negative just to get negative. Last time I got mad about a coaching hire was Bobo and Mason and I listed the reason why at the time just like I am now.. The kids at Colorado went there because of Deion. Bama gets 5 star DBs no matter who the DC or DB coach is. His recruiting as DC at FSU wasn't as good the the previous guy and many of his player didn't work out. The last time he was bringing in top players that developed was when he was the LB coach. Maybe it will work out. I hope it does, but I'm not counting on him being here this time next year.

On the OC.. I agree that play calling needs to be improved, but I don't know if that warrants an entire OC change. Monty has had good offenses everywhere he's been. I think there's some benefit to just allowing him and Freeze to adjust. I did say on here a little while back that I wouldn't be completely shocked if we promoted Kent Austin to OC and then hired Craig for Austin's old spot.

No. Been there done that. Plus he’s been trashing us the whole time he was at A&M. Loved him as qb but don’t want him back at Auburn

He will help recruiting. I don't think that's even a question.

He's not becoming our DC so I'm not that upset about it. Just odd timing to me
