I guess I’ll expand on my story. It’s rare for a born and raised Louisiana kid to go out of state but I did. I applied and got into the following schools: LSU, Bama, Ole Miss(lol) and Auburn. LSU I needed to take a summer course because my grades and ACT weren’t as stellar as they should have been.

I had toured Auburn first out of the other schools and I immediately fell for it and I told my dad this is where I wanted to go(obviously with me paying some tuition) and didn’t tour any other schools. The out of state tuition was stupid but it was the absolute best decision of my life. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t make that choice at that time at the end of my senior year. LSU would have ruined me and the other schools are trash. Now the decision obviously got some haze from my friends at the time lol. The bandwagon sidewalker LSU fans from that state are on another level. I have been living in BHaM since 2011 and the bammers still don’t bother me.

Anyway I’ll always remember Camp War Eagle 2005. Reinforced the decision. The rest is history. Met the wife there as well, that always helps. War fricking Eagle forever.

My dad left home at 13 as he couldn't go to high school,(WWII and no way to get to HS too far away) so he went to work on a neighbors farm due to their kids going off to war. He went into the Army when he could and finally got his GED the same year my oldest sister did. Mom graduated HS and then they were married while he was in the Army. Different times...

Wow. Such different times and different mentality with people. Thats unreal... My father went in the army in 1966 and was immediately stationed in Germany. I was born about 6 months later. My mom took me when I was just a month old and we moved to Germany to live just off the base where my dad was stationed. Lived there the first 2 years of my life. Such a different time.

yeah some of his older brothers went into the Army during WWII but there were too many mouths to feed as he told it in his house so he left. There were 13 kids and he lived on a 120 acre farm, no tractors etc because of gas restrictions and most of their produce went to the war effort. My dad learned to build things he needed eventually was a millwright but carter years were hard due to the starting of offshoring manufacturing.

I'll be completely honest, for a lot of the grunt work that people did in the 90s (and honestly even now) when it comes to the hardware side of things, a degree from Devry or somewhere like it may actually have been a better education than at a big university.

I loved my time at Auburn, and I am a proud alum, but on the MIS curriculum, we just touched on the actual system pieces in information systems. I had one class on Java programming, one class on VisualBasic, one class on SQL/Oracle databases. The engineering side may have had more, but even when I was in pre-engineering we were just dabbling - COBOL, Fortran, etc. None of that stuff would prepare someone for something like an MCSE certification.

Just curious where you were living if you were in school in Avondale and working on south Moreland. I grew up in Candler Park/Little 5 so each of those areas were relatively close.

I was living in Griffin. I left very early every morning. School from 7:30 till 2 or so every day. Left school and drove to Morland ave. Basically worked till I was tired. Usually 8-10pm. Drove home. Up the next day and did it again. Atleast one day a week, I brought clothes and slept in the bunk house at Thurston then went to school the next day from there. Never went home. On Friday night and the weekends, I would basically work as many hours as my body could stand. Usually 10-12 on Saturday and Sunday. I was married and had bills to pay so I needed the money to survive.

As for the school, I really cant say a bad thing about it. I was a Electronics major and back then, it was component level. So we built circuits and used some Integrated circuits. I did a little programming on my own but did not have any in school. I started with GW bAsic and taught myself Visual Basic and C++.

With Devry, they had a rule. For every hour you spent in a classroom, you had one hour of lab time to match it. I enjoyed the school and the way they taught. If you needed a lot of hand holding, it was not for you.

I had a job lined up before I graduated and worked there 13 years before they relocated to Mexico thanks to the Nafta agreement. Moved to Atlanta after that to work for Rockwell for three years then they relocated. After that, I went fishing

I basically went to Devry year around. A week or so in between Trimesters. Got my BA in under 4 years.

Interesting, didn't realize there was another alum posting on here that lived in the valley. I lived in Scottsdale from 2007-2014 until I got tired of my commute and moved to the west side of town.
