Love Bruce and everything he has done for our program but this was a real selfish move.

Bruce doesn't owe us a damn thing.

We hired him when he was damaged goods, and he paid us back more than we could have ever dreamed.

I can see both sides presented in this thread, even in regards to timing. You're foolish to think Steven wasn't going to be the next coach whenever Bruce chose to leave, now or later. I'm pretty sure that was in the deal with the last contract, for better or worse. Bruce has also purposefully worked to give Steven more responsibility in this team in game planning, in game, and the overall direction. That part isn't a shock.

I'm also coming around to the idea that the timing aspect isn't all bad. However, that hinges on the messaging and communication behind the scenes with the team. I HOPE this isn't coming as a shock to the players and the staff has its ducks in a row in that regard. Things can get ugly if players flee at this point.

When it comes to Auburn and basketball, I could never ever be mad at Coach Pearl.

The sample size in either direction isn't big enough to say there's a trend. Very few sons of HC's seem to take up the profession.

Coach K's son isnt coaching. His brightest assistant won the job over a few others. What look would it be for royalty in Duke to hire their next coach from Buffalo.

I don't think the son is the aspect that really matters though, merely the coach's protege.

Scheyer at Duke is a little different. Coach K gave him an entire season in advance of his retirement. It was public knowledge coach K was hanging it up after that season where he allowed Schier to be the face of the new Duke.

UNC had a legend retire in a way more similar to Bruce, it hired Hubert Davis. Things haven't gone well, and Davis is 100% on the hot seat this season.

Hoke just posted that it leaked before they were able to tell the players. Absolutely hate that if true. Also said it sounds like this will not be an interim situation, but that Steven is the HC and will have a multi-year contract.

Also said Bruce told him he and Cohen already agreed to make Steven the next HC and Bruce believed Cohen would keep his word. Bruce’s timeline has apparently been Sept for a while and wanted to make a decision before practice started.

Given the timing, I'm ok with keeping as much continuity as possible. I'm not confident though.

Is the sticking point here really about Steven being his son?

And Scheyer was named the successor prior to K's final season. There really wasn't much of a competition there.

Yes, yes, no single situation is ever the exact same.

I'm no expert on college basketball history, but what other coach-son combinations have had one as involved as Steven? I for real don't know.

His right to retire, but I think its kind of bullshite to do it right before the season.

Also I'm sorry that I'm not sorry, but retiring for politics LMAOOOO.

Steven has been doing more behind the scenes than most realize, so I have faith in him. Timing is about has Bruce could make it though.

The Duke job was coveted amongst the assistants and I am sure many HBC's.

Yes they named Sheyer prior and that transition worked, hence why Sheyer isnt some comparable for us.

Steven and Burg have been running practices all summer. I think we’ll be fine.

He 100% waited until today to strong arm the AD into having to promote Steven.

If that is true, this was bungled and there is no way around that fact. They had everything they needed to do this correctly and fricked it up. No excuse for that.
