Be careful with all that logic and real world application....

I don't think we like that around here.

So what does he do? Go back to the old gus of 2010/ 2013? Implement lindsey's offensive style and stay out of play calling? I don't see a true fix. Auburn needs to hit reset and start over. Too many things that wont change or cant change

AUBURN, Alabama – Though no agreement has been finalized and changes remain possible, Gus Malzahn is on the verge of accepting a reduced buyout and other limitations to remain for his seventh season as Auburn’s head football coach, sources told AuburnUndercover. Malzahn’s buyout, sources said, would be reduced by an unspecified amount. Any coaching staff moves would have to be revenue neutral, effectively removing the possibility of paying buyouts for assistant coaches and assuring Chip Lindsey would remain as offensive coordinator unless he chooses to leave. President Steven Leath laid out the offer in a Sunday meeting with Malzahn. Leath left Tuesday morning for a meeting in Washington, D.C., and, according to athletic department sources, left negotiations with Malzahn in the hands of trustee Raymond Harbert. Malzahn was on the road recruiting Monday night and left on another recruiting trip Tuesday morning. He is not expected to return until late Tuesday night. After Auburn beat Georgia and Alabama, when both were ranked No. 1 last November, Leath, with strong support from Harbert, reached an agreement with Malzahn on a seven-year contract worth $49 million with 75 percent guaranteed. Since then, Auburn has gone 7-7 overall and 4-7 against power-five conference teams. After starting this season ranked No. 8, Auburn finished 7-5 overall and 3-5 in the SEC, creating a firestorm among Auburn supporters and donors. To buy out Malzahn’s contract and make a change would cost approximately $32 million with some $15 million due in 30 days and the rest to be paid in four annual installments. Auburn coaches, sources said, have faced questions about Malzahn’s future on virtually every stop on the recruiting trail over the past two days. In six seasons at Auburn, Malzahn is 52-27 overall and 28-20 in the SEC. In 2013, his first Auburn team was 12-2 overall, 7-1 in the SEC, won the conference championship and lost 34-31 to Florida State in the BCS Championship team. His 2017 team went 10-2 in the regular season and won the West Division championship before losing 28-7 to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game and 34-27 to Central Florida in the Peach Bowl to finish 10-4. From 2014-2016, the combined record was 23-16 overall and 11-13 in the SEC. The Tigers finished 8-5 and 4-4 in 2014 after a 7-1 start, finished 7-6 and 2-6 in 2015 and 8-5 and 5-3 in 2016, losing to Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. Malzahn’s bowl record is 1-4, the only win over Memphis in the 2015 Birmingham Bowl. There remains no word on when an agreement will be finalized.

Awesome how things are being run so much more efficiently down on The Plains than when that asshat Jay Jacobs was in charge, ain't it?

I don't think the AD is involved in this. It was handled by Leath and one of the boosters.......from everything I have read.

According to BM, Gus thinks he can win a national championship at Auburn and beat the odds

We might need to take his shoe strings out of his shoes.

It looks like Gus is agreeing to lower his buyout with the condition that he remain in charge of decisions on assistants. And Auburn said fine, but if we do that then we’re capping their salaries.

So they’re basically saying if another school wants to give them a pay raise to leave that they’re not going to match it.

You might be right. And, God knows, that would feel good - to bounce CGM out of AU and start fresh.

The buyout prevents us from doing this. Given the situation, I think that this could be the best option for everyone - even Gus.

At least it now gives Gus a lot more to fight for. He had gotten complacent. I am hoping that this puts some fire back into him.

WHERE IS THE MOTIVATION FOR GUS TO COACH NEXT YEAR?

What about the recruits? He's a lame duck. Bunch of idiots running this admin.

He’s essentially lowering his buyout to remain here which tells me that he wants to be here and wants to win with what he has right now.

If he wasn’t motivated to coach the team then he would have told them to shove it.

I think you guys are overthinking Gus.

He’s always been about pride and demanding respect and his salary was a sign of that. Getting fired, even with the gigantic paycheck, means less than him staying and winning. And he clearly believes he can stay and win and keep his job so that’s more valuable to him.

This is a guy that a decade ago was living in a trailer and sharing a $500 car with Kristi and still talks about it fondly.

THATS WHAT THE WHOLE STORY IS ABOUT. REDUCING THE BUYOUT. HE ABSOLUTELY LOSES MORE MONEY IF HE SUCKS NOW.

This is just more evidence of what many folks already understand...IT ISN'T ABOUT THE MONEY FOR THESE GUYS. They don't just get a contract and then just sit back and beat off. They are wired to win.

They're also realizing that we're paying chip 700k a year to shag balls in practice a god damn job a GA could do.

If Gus is going to call the plays and run his offense (which he is) then stop trying to hide it with hires and made up titles. Title chip to practice assistant and pay him 125k a year

The reduced buyout would be huge but the wording with the revenue neutral part worries me

I am reading this as "If you want to hire them, it comes out of your pocket and no buyout protection"

Well, it seems like we’ve been paying 700K to Chip to complicate the offense if we’re to believe everything we are told about Gus’s involvement there.

Gus’s offense or bust. It’s not a pro set, it’s not going to be pass happy, we aren’t going to put a lot of kids in good shape for the NFL but at least when he ran it with Lashlee our guys knew what to do.
