Dubbed 'Hopper'.

https://www.hpcwire.com/off-the-wire/auburn-university-unveils-1m-supercomputer/

quote:

The Lenovo supercomputer is actually a collection of 120 computers called “nodes” tied together into a coherent system controlled by a “head node,” with its speed ranking in the top 1 percent in the world in terms of access to the large pool of shared storage. Each node has 20 cores that process information, which means 2,400 cores are available for the computational needs of researchers.

The system has more than 16 terabytes of memory and 1.4 petabytes of disk space. One terabyte equals one million megabytes, while one petabyte is 1,000 terabytes. A typical personal computer has 8 megabytes of memory and 500 megabytes of disk space.

Auburn has named its new supercomputer the “Hopper” in honor of the late Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, an extraordinary woman whose work laid the foundation for much of today’s computing work.

Boy, I bet this computer is faster than submitting my batch of punch cards back in the day.

no computer made in the last probably 20-30 years has anything even remotely close to such shitty specs. what an absurd statement

Not sure if this is innovative.

At my company we have 50 node servers all the way up to 400 node servers for our big data sets. 120 nodes is nothing "new". With that being said I have no idea how much our servers cost or what the cost of having a 400 node is.

We spent $8mil on our upgraded database management system hardware.

I feel like a $1mil supercomputer isn't that impressive

It isn't, until you realize that it is one computer and not a server farm.

This is a step in the right direction and was needed. Compared to some places (Georgia Tech, Texas) it is very small.

"Auburn University today unveiled its new $1 million supercomputer"

"120 Lenovo (Chinese) computers tied together "

I could ask:

How much are we paying our head coach?(4.35mil?)
How much was our new wellness & recreation center?(72mil)
How much for the new stadium expansion?(145mil)

but I won't.

"How long before some guy downloads porn on it?"

probably has an $80 nvidia graphics card in it

as long as it's not HD video your good!

I remember having to sign up for supercomputer access in 1990 to complete projects.
