really good kick returner.

Does this mean we can not have our starting two RB's as our kick returners? Yes please.

Nothing on the Texas 247 board about Kaufman. Usually that’s a strong signal

2023 3* QB Eli Holstein will visit in June. Only a 3* but he’s currently a top 10 QB and #134 in his class.

He’s near the top of Auburn’s 2023 QB board.
Offers from UGA, LSU, A&M, PSU, etc

Bumped up today to a 4*, #6 QB. Still visiting in June

I'm not sure I see an issue with these transfers we are getting, especially the ones with 1 year of eligibility. I feel like shoring up depth with guys that have experience, and want an opportunity to showcase themselves for the NFL is a sign that we want to maximize our season next year as much as possible. Not filling these gaps, or doing so with young guys that couldn't make an impact next year, would be a sign of throwing away a season and a long term rebuild. We could just throw freshman into the fire and call it a "development" year. However, imo the best way to start gaining momentum and building for the future is to do everything possible to be competitive next year and win 8-9 games. If we are able to do that, then I think the coaching staff can sell the progress to recruits easier. I think going after these one year transfers that can potentially help immediately is the a sign we want to be competitive next year.

It also shows how bad our depth is at certain positions.

I have no problem with what this staff is doing. I think it is the way to go.

I think the 1 year guys help us tread water and prevent us having a really, really shitty season.

There’s no incentive to losing games so I don’t think that the coaches have any interest in the program backsliding while they install their systems. I just have low expectations for what we’ll be able to do. They’ll need to show direction and win a big game or two in the process but I’d expect growing pain along the way

Cam Newton
Nic Marshall
Justin Fields
Joe Burrow
Etceteras

I will take all these I can get. Every year. Strong. Weak. Rebuilding. Don’t care.

Most of the moves so far are on defense. A 3-4 philosophically is really different that a 4-3 with the DL and LB/DE. I don't pretend to know how those fronts impact the secondary. With the DL and OLB's, they require a different body type than what we have, which is why I think we've had some turnover on those spots. The most glaring example is the 0-technique in a 3-4. Its all about being huge and strong, holding the point and commanding a double team. Everything in a 3-4 works off of that. Wright and Truesdale could have done that, now its Fair and Truesdale. 5-techniques line up positionally different than a 3-technique, and are lighter than a 3-techniques in a 4-3. OLB's are bigger LBs than what we have, almost like a DE with no hands on the ground and more responsibility. The biggest difference is having two-gap responsibility in the 3-4, vs. one-gap in the 4-3. That's an adjustment so I'm a little worried for the beginning of the AU season. It took Dave Aranda some time before his LSU defenses looked good.

Speaking of OT's, the AU staff either does not like the Shor kid from a talent/film perspective, or wants nothing to do with his apparently overbearing Dad. He's an OT we could get. The prir staff was going to sign him, IMO. The new staff has just completely ignored him.

With watching how Gus has recruited at UCF, and our new staff turning down guys they wanted; I am slowly changing my view on Gus and his lack of development. I am starting to see he lack the ability to recruit kids who can/will development. He would get a kid like Shor who would elevate our rankings, but would never develop.

In hindsight and through various reports, Gus seemed to be incredibly controlling on who AU would recruit and offer. Particularly on offense and I don't think he did that on defense. I never was a Gus hater, but I can't say that I've heard similar stories about other head coaches. I think usually its a little more collaborative.

One exception I can think of, and of course it involves AU. Terry Bowden and Rodney Allison (I may have the assistant in question wrong but I think it was Allison). Allison was recruiting Chris Chuckwuma, a great back for UArk out of JUCO for AU and lined up his commitment and just needed final sign-off from Terry to accept the commitment. Terry said no. Allison's response was, "What's wrong? Is he too big or too fast?"

He had a significant shoulder injury that sidelined him last season and he turned down opportunities to participate at camps where Harsin and Bobo had an opportunity to be at because their sons were there. They wanted to see the shoulder.

I think there’s probably more to it but that’s probably a big starting point for why the staff isn’t engaging him much

They are actually doing a pretty good job there right now. I think KN posted a week or two ago that our current staff had been in contact with Shor again.. Not sure how high he is on the list, but they've talked now.

Yeah, and those raw talent dudes who can't develop will probably net 10 wins a year there. When competition condenses in the SEC; that doesn't work.

JMO but I think Kaufman is the biggest get from the portal so far. Multiple years to play, experience in Mason's system, position of need, etc.

Also Finley is being predicted to Auburn by JBoy that probably means others are too.
