Bruce clearly overestimated some of our returning players namely the guards. Last year they could play with some abandon cause of Smith and Kessler making up for a lack of ball discipline with scoring and blocks. We have no outside shooter and no consistent wing player at the 3 that can’t take it to the rack and finish. If we had those two pieces we would have about 4 more wins.

To be honest, I think this team has exceeded their abilities this year. The talent is just not there. It’s a testament to the coaching and the effort from the players that they are close to making the tournament.

Wendell, Flan, Jailyn and KD are all nice pieces to build around a couple of studs. But they are all role players. Broome is good but it’s hard for him to carry the offensive load, defensive load, and rebounding load every night. Especially, when we couldn’t make a post entry pass the first two months of the season.

Cardwell is a solid backup center.

Lior, Moore, Zep, and Tre wouldn’t get minutes on the decent SEC squads.

Exactly. Lots of guys on our team are perfectly fine players.. they just all unfortunately need the guy next to them to be a little better. We don’t have any “dudes” as the kids say

I think Jaylin could be and is a miss match at the 4 spot but for some reason he lacks aggressiveness on offense.

Yeah he’s our best player just not sure he has the mentality to consistently be the guy. I like green a lot too but he’s not built for what we put on him.

Well, here we are...down to the last two games of the reg and I still keep running several scenarios in my head to see AU play in the tourney. On one hand I can convince myself that they could lose the last two and still sneak in. But I then I realize all the conference tournaments could screw that scenario up. But then if the next two are blowouts, I could see the March Madness ship sailing regardless. Could the SEC tourney make a difference? Outside of winning it, I just don't know based on past history. Nothing like sweating it out right to the end.

I do know one thing, all my worries would subside if they could win just one more. I know Bruce and staff will not sugar coat the importance of the next two, so no excuses when the dust settles.

The selection committee seems bipolar on conference tournaments. The hard and fast rule does seem to be that it never seems to effect those vying for high seeds. But it seems it varies year to year as far as how much it can help bubble teams. Last year it didn’t seem to help bubble teams at all. Years prior it definitely has out some bubble teams over the top.

Conf tourneys matter when it helps a team they selected and doesn’t matter when they don’t.

Certainly don't want to dismiss the remainder of this season just yet but with the news of Kermit this past week, does anybody think they have players take a look around for next season? What's the thoughts on Brakefield and Murrell?

I'd love Murrell. Brakefield is fine but not sure he's got that dawg in him

I'd love to see us grab Murrell, he'd be a perfect fit at the 2 spot. Brakefield is a nice piece who would fit in well at small forward, but he's already transferred once, so don't think we could get him without a redshirt year unless I'm missing something.

I’m disappointed for him, but he did not have the pedigree of Jabari Smith.

I hope he can develop. He’s an unfinished player. Coaching and development may bring out the best in him.

Isn't there a new rule where inter conference SEC transfers have to sit a year? People have been talking about it in regards to Brock Vandagriff having to wait if he transfers this summer.

First I’ve heard of that. Honestly didn’t think SEC had the power to block player transfers and if they did that would surprise me

It’s not a new rule, it’s been on the books for a few years at least and the SEC was not able to pass the rules change last year at the SEC spring meetings. They did present it when the NCAA changed their transfer policy.

For now, any player transferring within conference with immediate eligibility still has to be in the portal by Feb 1 for fall sports. Not sure what it is for basketball.

Yeah the Feb date is just for fall sports. No way you could have the same date for guys whose seasons are still going on.

Zakai zeigler just went down and was carried off for UT in a non contact injury to his knee. Would be a HUGE blow to Tennessee if he can’t go Saturday.

Hope he's ok, able to play, and shoots 0-10 from the field like he did against us in Knoxville.
