Stole this off the free board on ITAT.
Auburn baseball just picked up a major pitcher. Two Time Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year Keegan Thompson, 6'2", 190 lbs from Cullman decided last night to forgo the MLB draft and go to Auburn. He is the first person in Alabama High School history to be named a Gatorade player of the year twice.
St. Louis wanted to draft him in the 2nd round, but he chose Auburn instead. He could have been a 1st round pick, but he kept telling teams he was seriously thinking about college so they stayed away. In the MLB draft they lose money if they draft a player that high and don't sign him.
Guy is a major talent and throws in the mid-90's with four basic pitches. He also batted around .400 with about 10 HRs and a bunch of RBIs last year for the Cullman Bearcats.
Keegan played for Team USA 16U that won a gold medal and in one of his big games he had 12 Ks vs. Cuba. He also played for the 18U Team USA team that won a gold medal also. Has extensive National team experience.
Major, major pickup for Auburn baseball. WAR EAGLE!!!
Here's the MLB.com bio
====================
Pitching for Team USA's 16-and-under team in the gold medal game of the IBAF World Championships two years ago, Thompson struck out 12 batters in a complete game victory against Cuba. He earns high marks for his poise, aggressiveness and pitchability, thanks in part to that performance. Thompson mixes his low-90s fastball with sharp curveballs. His high arm slot gives his curveball more bite, but makes his fastball mostly straight. Thompson also throws a slider and a changeup, giving him four pitches with a chance to be at least average offerings. Thompson is committed to Auburn.

Keenan Thompson is playing baseball for us?! Alright, OK, I'm sure he's heard that one before.

Wait, did we hire a coach?

Kid has to be a die hard Auburn fan to turn down that kind of money to go to a school without a coach.........

also, it appears that Kevin Davis and Anfernee Grier will also likely end up at Auburn.
Davis is a big time pitcher and Grier is a stud OF.

Maybe we're better off without a coach

quote:Not necessarily. According to the Cullman Paper The Cards told Thompson they could not meet Thompson's financial demands. So they did not draft Thompson because they would have lost the money allotted for that slot.

Yes necessarily. He turned down good money to go play for a team with no coach.

This is bullshite. I follow the MLB draft religiously and I have never once seen Thompson mocked in the first round. Baseball America ranked him #186, and they dont account signability into their rankings.
This is a big get for AU's program, but this kid was not a "first round player who loved AU so much that teams couldn't meet his price".

Yes Keegan loves AU he has been committed to AU since his sophomore year. The Cullman coaches are big AU fans and have connections with Dunn.(friends) He was was really torn about this but the parents checked with other players families that got drafted and made decision on this. They really wanted him to go to school. He is a steal and whatever coach comes in will be very lucky. Also there are two players that are going to be freshman this yr at Cullman who have been pitching with the varsity already. Looks promising for us the next few yrs.

We offered a freshman from Byrnes, SC today. Big fricking kid for a freshman.
Jake Bentley came into Auburn’s 7-on-7 camps as the starting quarterback of Byrnes’ second team, and left with a championship trophy and an Auburn offer.
Bentley, a 6-foot-4 and 207-pound freshman from Duncan, S.C., enjoyed his first visit to Auburn.
