I love Mike, but I'm off the bandwagon.

He is not Nolan. He does not have the hunger or drive Nolan had.

Time to move on and just hire Nolan back.

He's in the top 20 coaches as far as salaries go, number 2 in the SEC behind Cal.

This is so asinine, he's a bottom 3-4 coach in this league today.

His ship has sailed as far as peak performance, we need to cut ties if we miss the tourney this year.

He's not the guy to get us over the hump. This was a huge payday job and the hunger and fire doesn't seem to be there.

Marshall or Buzz would be way more ideal.

Who would we even lose? Every guy we have coming in are basically Hog lifers aren't they?

Make a solid hire and probably minimal risk losing anyone.

We're going to suck arse next year anyway. Especially if Gafford leaves. (Dear god I hope he doesn't)

Was thinking about this. If this team is struggling right now, I don't want to think about next year.

This isn’t football.

Arkansas is a talent-rich basketball state, and we have a basketball program with (reasonably) recent national success and a devoted fan base.

There’s no excuse for us to be as inconsistent and, at times, downright uncompetitive as we have been.

Given the amount of talent the state produces, it’s not at all unreasonable to say that we should be a tournament team on a near yearly basis with the occasional push beyond the second round and into the Elite Eight and Final Four mix.

Agreed.

I like Mike and genuinely want him to succeed, but he’s not even a semblance of Nolan.

Part of what made Nolan great — and ironically also led to his downfall — was the chip on his shoulder and the edge that came with it, which permeated throughout his teams. Mike doesn’t have that and neither do his teams.

Haven’t read the whole thread but you’re spot on with your last two comments.

He needs to send a message to Barford and Macon to get their shite together. Quickly.

I would bench the guys until they learned to get their edge back. They had it just this year, but they've lost it. There is an obvious discord in the locker room and it starts and ends with those two guys.

Still not ready to give up on this team, but I'm moving closer to the fence.

Agreed

As someone who will be the first to point out how bad our talent is in football as a state, our basketball talent is very good. It is unrealistic to assume you are going to get every blue chip out of the state but you could build a very strong team if you picked from a pool of the last 10 years. We all know of the players that Mike wasn't able to keep and we can argue over whose fault it really was for a long time. Either way, we have to get better at that.

If he would actually develop players and recruit real basketball players. Not recruit athletes and hope they turn into basketball players. That's been my biggest complaint with him. Recruiting these 3-4 combo players, who are just tall athletes. They suck at actually being real basketball players. Plus, it seems there in no actual in game planning or coaching, just all pep talk.

And despite all that, and our current slump, Mike still wins 2 out of every 3 games his team plays in.

All I can say to people who want to see him fired is be careful what you wish for. This program wallowed in less than mediocre waters for 20 damn years after we fired Nolan. And that was coming off of the greatest heights we have seen in program history.

If Mike fails to make the tournament this year, I'll start entertaining thoughts of looking for someone else, but right now that seems to be the dumbest thing we could do. If he makes the big dance this year that will be 3 out of the last 4. It is ridiculous to even consider trying to replace that.

In year 7, we're only shooting to "make" the NCAAT? I get what you're saying but at some point, something has to give.

Put that into perspective and re-read it.

At what point is just "making" it not enough. When is he going to have a better team than Portis' team, last year and this year?

Cook, Thomas and Hall are completely terrible.

I'm sorry, Hall may be able to throw a sweet dunk down but dude cannot even dribble.

Jury is still out on whether Cook and Thomas can actually dribble. Everyone has guys their size that can legit take the ball to the hole.

Our 3 guys that can even do that are having trouble getting past SEC athletes.

As I said, after we fired Nolan (coach who elevated Arkansas to Blueblood status) we fricking sucked for TWENTY YEARS (put that into perspective and re-read it).

Making the tournament is the goal, man. It's the goal of every damn team in the country. If he is consistently putting his team in the tournament, he should stay. He is putting them in range of playing for a national title.

It's funny how people love to throw out the 7 year number.

It's a way of skating around having to account for the upward trend over the last 4 years.

Heath didn't completely suck and if we hadn't mucked up the Altman hire, none of this would be an issue.

We can easily get a top coach here, just let go of the nostalgia and your soft spot for Mike.

I love the guy too but we should be in the Sweet 16 mix EVERY YEAR.

We haven't even made one in 6 and will not this year.
