Norvell did better than Silverfish at Memphis, plus he had ties to the state.
That was my pick the Pittman round, I was wrong, but Hunter wasn't right, turns out his top two would have both been failures.

Lashlee was quick to turn Arkansas down, the AD said it was because of NIL, but most public reporting has Arkansas listed as having more NIL than SMU.
You force Sam to retire two years earlier after he's peaked and burned out with NIL, the talent pool increases tremendously.
You wait until he fails the following year, you're the only SEC job open, better chance in getting who you want.
But no, you wait until LSU, OM, Auburn, Florida, and Kentucky are open and surprisingly the best you can do it Silverfish who sees the value of being fired from Arkansas compared to being fired from Memphis.

Nobody that knows anything about anything would shite on Will Stein. He’s a hot up and coming commodity.
Morris is too but our fans would never look past the name.
Lebby has surprised me. I wouldn’t have been excited about that hire BUT I think he’s getting bailed out a little bit by a great QB. Jury’s still out, but didn’t they only have 1 SEC win last year when they lucked into beating us?

Sam Pittman would have been viewed differently had he been fired after 2023 instead of getting Arkansas back to the Chad Morris years.
That was the time to get an upgrade while the rest of the SEC didn't have any openings.
Nope.
Arkansas did the opposite as usual.

Silverfield was just bland.

No I’ve got that point after it’s been repeated here a few times
And my counter point remains the same
It ultimately comes down to whoever is doing the hiring/recruiting to be able to see potential in people, regardless of their background. Seeing potential is a key attribute of a leader. Countless examples of people with subpar backgrounds that have been put in a better situation and exceeded any past accomplishments. But to realize that potential takes time & the right environment.
The paper bags are from frustration & lost patience from years of wilderness wondering. It’s not from 3 games under silverfield.

The problem is we always make the wrong decisions on these types of things. I don’t know if the fans can really help sway the feeling or not but our fans on social media seem to ruin these types of hires constantly. I said above that they shite on Will Stein but they also shite on Jeff Lebby and Eric Morris. We’re never going to nail these types of hires because our fans think we should be landing a 5* name head coach and then we miss on the obvious choice and instead land on Silverfield.
Yea. Goes back to what I’ve said about the attitude of fans hurting their actual reality.

For the life of me I can't understand hiring a CEO coach unless he is an elite leader. We have to have someone who is great on one side of the ball. We've made that mistake two times in a row.
Posted on 9/19/26 at 9:28 pm to Drewbie
Yes and as an AD you have to know you can't take a chance on two things, an up and comer and another CEO coach after Pittman.
The level of optimism would be different if you had a guy who the fanbase knew would take care of and fix problems that arise on one side of the ball, hell even special teams like Beamer at VT would have a higher level than the CEO who doesn't know what to do.
Look no further than the names that have obvious flaws as HC that have been popular names for the past 20ish years, Petrino and Venebels. Both always have the caveat of "you know you'd have a good offense/defense every year". Those tossing this caveat use it to ignore the obvious flaws.
That was tried to be leaned on with Pittman before he informed every he was no longer an oline coach.
You have Silverfish talking about how long he's coached and how he's coached every position at some level. Gives the jack of all trades, master of none vibe, which is not good for optimism/trust.

I mean the positives of Petrino on top of being just straight up better than Silverfield were that he had no leverage and he was the perfect stop gap if you still wanted to make a hire the following year in a more advantageous hiring climate.
He had no leverage and would have signed to a 2ish year deal with a low buyout that you could easily get out of if expectations weren't met and you wouldn't be stuck with a trainwreck for the next 3+ years like we are right now. It made too much sense.

Sure, I made that argument.
I had the same argument before he fired Anderson and allowed Muss to walk.
In both cases it was going to be a hire worst then what you had before boosters stepped in and begged Hunter to make the call so a hire that was already set up could be made.
He's only hired from within for the secondary sports.
He's had no one willing to put their neck on the line for football and him. I firmly believe with the silverfield hire it was because the boosters are tired of doing hunters job for him and gave him the rope so to speak.

Could have been Stein or Eric Morris both supposedly interviewed and wanted the job.

quote:This is unequivocally false. Novell had taken Memphis to three straight AAC title games and won one. Silverfield’s best seasons were two T-3s. He finished in the bottom half of the conference in three of his six seasons. He was slowly destroying what Norvell and Fuentes had built there.
Silverfish largely just maintained what Memphis was under Norvell as they were under Fuentes

Stein looks like the best hire of the group. Many in the UO program had said he was the brains of that operation not Lanning and they were really hoping to keep him for one more year with Moore coming back. That looks very accurate with how both Kentucky and Oregon look with and without him.
Would he have taken the Ark job over Kentucky? He's from Kentucky and mentioned many times coming back home was big for him so who knows. UK has the virtually the same NIL as us this year so what exactly would we sell to lure him? Less pressure, same money and his home state. Don't think he'd take our job unless we offered a good bit more which we wouldn't do anyways.

One thing you are correct about. Like you, I think, I've been around since the last 20, and old enough to remember the last 13-14 years, of the SWC days. So, even though I haven't collected as much dust as your old arse, I do remember quite a few good times as a lifelong fan and have been miserable most of the last 15 years.

I kind of wonder of part of the reasoning for not giving Petrino a real shot at the job had more to do with HY's ego and fear of what would happen if Petrino was ultimately successful.
He already has Cal who doesn't really answer to him and thatnhe gets no credit for the hire (nor should he), Dave garners much more respect than him also. I don't think he relished the idea of potentially having another successful big personality on campus.
I mean, there had to be more than what meets the eye because going the Petrino route, as you stated, was truly a no-brainer by the time he filled the job with Silverfield.

Whether right or wrong on HY's side. Petrino was solely hired to put asses in the seats when Pittman was flailing in the wind.
He was never in the picture for the HC job.
I've said this numerous times.
Dude is damaged goods and an OC for life.
