Play Calling

It may be a function of a lot of Franks decision making but I still really question a lot of the play calling. It got better but there were still some boneheaded WTF series.
3rd and 12 QB draw when we've been getting separation and throwing the ball pretty well the last 3-4 drives. WTF was that?
And the Hornsby series? I feel like you've got to give the guy an opportunity to throw an easier pass to a TE or to the corner when the entire stadium thinks a sneak is coming. (Granted Knox couldn't catch shite all night)
I think Briles will get better but he still does some stupid Big 12 video game shite out there that doesn't put our guys in a good position to capitalize.
Also deserves credit for that big TE wheel route. Loved that playcall and a few of the screen/shovel pass calls.
Hopefully its just a rythym thing and we continue to improve.

The Hornsby stupidity and that last 3 n out were really the only things i didn't like. I think he called a pretty good game last night compared to the first two.

I'm just happy to see different plays, formations, and concepts each week. Maybe by the end of the year 25% of the offense will be installed.

I thought Briles called a hell of a game. Special teams lost the game for us.

I’d feel a lot better if Briles came out and said that the last series was just bad play-calling on his part. If he was given a directive to keep the ball on the ground then I’m concerned.

Briles made some bad calls including yet another doomed Hammonds jet sweep (though Auburn bailed us out on that one with a face mask).
That having been said I thought he called a much better game this week. In particular he slowed the offense down in the second half to make sure he got the right play in and to give our defense a breather. Don't get me wrong, he wasn't snapping it with one second on the clock, but he slowed down just a little bit to make sure everyone was on the same page.
He went with more counter runs and screens to take advantage of the Auburn pass rush and that slowed them down enough for Franks to throw some deep balls. Going forward Briles has to either radically adapt how he uses the sub QB or just get away from it altogether. It hasn't worked yet and its blown up a couple of promising drives.
I'd give him a passing grade with room for improvement.

That was ensuring that they had to use all their timeouts. very conversative play calling though definitely playing not to lose.

this is unexplainable and someone should ask a ton of questions about what the frick was that. did franks get hurt? just tired from rest of drive? is that an actual goal line package we installed for some reason.

I like the playcalls briles is making most of the time though. he's definitely a great OC, tonight i saw more offense against auburn than we have since before bielema left.

I’m still “iffy” on Briles...
Is this the second or third straight that Frank’s has come out on the goal line and one of the running QBs has gone in for two plays that are unsuccessful?
The drive after the missed FG should’ve stayed aggressive and played for the first down. That was frustrating.
Continuing to run Hammonds on the same play each week with the same result is also frustrating. Yesterday was bailed out by a face mask penalty.
Admittedly, Briles is still handcuffed by not having Boyd and Treylon B.

those goal line stands are super questionable. I would like to hear briles speak to what the frick he's thinking there.

I think everyone is in agreement the two mistakes briles made was being too conservative after the missed fg instead of just keep running our offense trying to get a 1st and icing the game and then the qb sub package. Keep the alpaca out there and let’s get a tuddy. Btw if that’s Boyd instead of a 5’10 white boy then it’s a touchdown when franks threw it out there on 1st and goal

Considering our personnel available it wasn’t so bad but there are some things to consider in hindsight. We need Burks and Boyd...I get it, you play with who you brought, but Arkansas isn’t in a position to plug and play

Knox needs to step up.
He's been pretty underwhelming honestly.
I know he's young but he's got to be better.

My biggest complaint is that our last drive was so pathetic. Get a first down there and we win the game. So why did it look like we didn't even try?

Pussy playcalling and honestly trying to leave it to the defense and say “we gave you the lead”
It was cop out, not to lose, playcalling.

I really have zero issue with Briles game calling yesterday, except the conservative third down call. That may have come from Pittman though. Based on what I saw, Franks checked himself out on the Hornsby plays.
The reality is Arkansas did enough to win the football game but got hosed.

We had a big negative play on first down. I didn't mind the call with how well the running game had been working.
This caused auburn to burn a time out. Now Briles hands are kind of tied, can't afford another negative play on second down, so the safe strategy is to focus on getting auburn to burn their time outs and punt.
If the refs made the correct call of a fumble, even if auburn recovers, they are then left scrambling their fg unit onto the field for a 45+ attempt to win with out the ability to stop the clock beforehand.
Instead that call went against the hogs three fold, no loss of yardage, clock stoppage, time to set up the fg as if they had a timeout thanks to the review, and the final frick you of a 10 second run off.
So Arkansas gets the ball back with one time out and the time to run one maybe two plays instead of enough time for 4-5 plays. The time loss takes away the strategy of playing for a field goal to force ot.

I have seen some painful calls go against the Hogs but that one is going to sting for a good long time.

My beefs with playcalling:
-TJ Hammonds on a jet sweep. Please stop
-All jet sweeps. Please stop, they aren't working. On that last 3-n-out, a failed sweep is the reason it was 2nd and 15.
-The last 3rd down call. Just bizarre, throw the ball.
-Chasing points. Just kick the PATs in the 3Q, only go for 2 in 4Qs
-Taking Franks out. That was bizarre. If he was tired/hurt, I would rather call a timeout to give Franks a break than put in KJ or Hornsby.

I did like the speed Hornsby has. Just wish he was bigger

100% agree. We don’t have the depth to depend on our defense late in games. Pittboss has got to make this adjustment. If the MSU guy doesn’t muff the punt we might be 0-3 and miserable.
