DVH used seven pitchers in game one. That is bad.

it is bad, but pitch counts werent extremly high on any of them. The killer was having to bring in Kopps in that game. We would feel a lot more comfortable pitching him another 40-50 tonight otherwise. We may anyway, but we really needed a more solid outing from Bolden, Noland and Monke

As long as we hit the ball everything will be fine. Nebraska doesn’t have anymore great pitching and I believe we will wake up today

No doubt.

Slavens, Franklin, Smith, Battles, Opitz are all without a hit in 2 games vs. Nebraska. Welch has just 1 hit

Exactly. Our bats all went silent at the same time. That time just happened to be Regionals

Time to revert to the mean today

So end was just pressing yesterday with it being his first day back I think. Idk what franklins deal is we need him to lock in. Opitz job is to be a rock behind the plate and gun down anyone foolish enough to run on him his bat is just extra if he gets going. And just because battles got hot last week doesn’t mean we should expect that type of performance from him at the plate all the time I mean there’s a reason he’s been in the 8-9 hole all year.

Nebraska didn't have great pitching yesterday. They had two good upper 80s / low 90s guys with a great scouting report.

Multiple guys are swinging through piped pitches trying to uppercut everything out of the park.
Franklin is the most obvious example but most of them are just as guilty of it... there is no way Franklin is going to get to a ball in the upper 3rd of the zone with his current current motion. When he had two clear whiffs on down the pipe 4-seamers you could see the mental decision made by Nebraska... throw another one.

Oh and who thinks Welch will see a fastball at all tonight?

Our hitters have to make adjustments.

that last cat they threw that started at short was pretty damn good. His slider the first couple innings was nasty. It set up everything else imo. The real problem I had was we didn’t hurt him in the 9th. He was clearly laboring out there. I think he got lucky with the get me over curveball to opitz which set up that entire AB. Then battles just reached on ball 4 at his eyes. If we’d been more patient I think we could’ve at least tied it in the 9th because he was running on fumes most of his pitches weren’t even close to the zone. They may come out juiced from their win yesterday but unless they just have an amazing performance from their starter I don’t see how they keep this a low scoring game today. I mean we scored 5 on them the first time we played them and you know they pitched 3 of there better arms that day. My guess is we will see whoever they threw against northeastern on day 1 then after that there pitching will be pretty much toast

The bats that we were really counting on this year have been gradually getting quieter for a while. The last month would have looked a lot different if the bottom of the lineup hadn’t massively outperformed. Luckily, Goodheart seems to be out of his funk. Now we need Slavens and Moore to get out of theirs. Franklin has been fairly consistent so I won’t put too much thought into a couple bad games from him.

Sounds like they may bring back their lefty ace who threw 64 pitches Friday. Need to get to him early but of course lefties always scare me. He wasn't very good against Northeastern though.

I'm wondering if we go back to our normal lineup tonight to see if that gets things going again.

I thought the lineup last night was the best we’ve seen all year. 8 guys who can go yard at any given moment is scary at any level much less the college level

i disagree. should we have done better? yes.
But they pitched a guy coming back from tommy john that will be a regular starter for them going forward and closed with their best closer...good chance we saw their current best 1-2 combo in the bullpen last night

I’ve watched all of their games in Fayetteville so far and those were the two best pitching performances I’ve seen from them. They had another reliever their first game (Frank I believe), that was pretty solid as well. I would imagine he’ll be part of their plan tonight.

When Moore goes pro I won't be surprised if coaches have him drop the switch-hitting.
He's so much more effective from the left side it's probably worth the leveraged left/left match-up.

For as advanced a player as Opitz is in so many ways, I struggle watching him not choke up on 2-strike counts... he already labors to be on-time... I do like that he's moved away from the Maxum Ultra to the more balanced 360. If anything Franklin needs to be toting the end-loaded Ultra up there... not guys like Opitz and Nesbit.

Has anyone noticed the size of the Husker's 1b... we can small ball them to death in that direction when needed... he's not exactly agile.

The arms were good, but IMO not half as good as the pitch selection to take advantages of our hitter's weaknesses.
We've hit much better mound talent this year where mistakes were made in pitch selection.

How many out-front fly balls did we hit last night sitting fastball after the dude had clearly established off-speed as his best pitch?

He made a pretty good play tagging Cullen Smith on a bunt at one point IIRC

Like someone said a few days ago about Slavens, Regionals are a bad time to shake off the post-injury rust.

Hopefully his bat wakes up because we need him if we've got a prayer of making Supers and beyond.

Swinging for the fences has been our approach for years. Sometimes it works, last night not so much.

LHP Cade Povich gets the start for Huskers. Povich threw 64 pitches in his Friday start.

Wiggins gets the nod for Hogs.

A lot of doom and gloom on here. We are the better team by far playing at home. Nothing guaranteed in baseball I feel pretty good about tonight.
