So how did that work. When the colonists settled here they found a book or something that said now that you are here you have the right to free speech?

I'm not going to read the whole declaration but I'm pretty sure the right to free speech in on the bill of rights so I'm not getting your point.

The point is that everyone is born with the right to liberty and this is a self evident truth. The right to liberty is not bestowed on us by our governments or by our militaries. The First Amendment to the Consitution codifies the illegality of government infringing on that right, but the right exists with or without the Constitution.

Circling back to the prior discussion, multiple people in this thread said the players were disrespecting those who died to give them the right to free speech. One could say people have died to make our right to exercise free speech safer/easier, but no person has given those rights to anyone. It might be a subtle distinction to some, but I think it's important.

I support our student athletes who choose to peacefully exercise their first amendment rights in support of a cause they believe is right.

I liken situations like this to what I was taught while in the Navy.

When you wear the uniform, you are an ambassador and representative of the Navy. What you say and do will reflect back on the entire Armed Forces.

While in uniform, you are not allowed to participate in any protests or political rallies. You're being paid to protect and serve and fight for every American citizen -- not critique.

If you want to protest, you do it on your own time in civilian attire like the rest of the citizens -- as a citizen. Not as a military member.

I see sports teams -- and every other entity that makes its employees wear a uniform -- similarly.

While wearing a uniform, you represent that institution and that state/city, and are an ambassador for them.

I understand your point about the military, but I believe there is no comparison between being a service member and being a student athlete of a public university. The UA has absolutely no business in policing the political views and statements of its students. To do so would be a huge disservice to them. A university should be a place where students are encouraged to exercise their civic rights.

The conditions of being a military service member are far different. Student athletes are not subject to the same code of conduct that is expected of service members.

They are wearing a uniform that represents the state and the university. They need to take off the uniform and wear normal clothing that doesn't represent the university and the state if they want to do their little protest.

They also need to do it at their own expense and time, not during a game at the expense of the university, fans, and boosters.

The main part I'm having a problem with is how you state that everyone is born with it. So the first settler that was born in the "new world" had this right?

I disrespect my country and talk about how many who join the army do so because they are from the dregs of society with no discernable skills or jobs and typically struggles in high school.

So what. Part of being American is my right to voice those opinions when someone comes and whines that we should all respect every member of the military and our country without question . frick that.

Play the anthem before the players come out.

Now that I have fixed this, consider hiring me as the next Athletic Director

Jesus Christmas either your reading comprehension sucks or you haven't read the bill of rights. It prevents the government from infringing on your humanly rights. It doesn't bestow shite

I'm honestly confused about why this is difficult for you to understand, as this is the underlying principle of our national philosophy. Our founders believed that every person on earth had these rights inherently--that these rights are not granted to them by any other individual. They are birthrights on virtue of being human.

I'm a proud American and it pisses me off to see young Americans that don't understand what their freedom really means blow off a show of respect so easily.
I would ask what they plan to do to further the cause they are supposedly supporting......
Taking a knee is for attention.... joining in the fight to CHANGE things is action.... and most of these people that are doing this are NOT doing that.....

What upsets a lot of people is the indignant privileged acting as if they're constantly ostracized.

The reality of the world is not the one the players perceive. At this point, if you kneel or do some other act during the anthem you're not rebelling you're just a lemming and being a follower. Which in this attention crazed look at me society we're devolving into is a far worse foul to commit.

Have any of those beastly girls tweeted or written a social media post explaining their reasoning or thoughts? If they're capable of constructing such a statement on their own it would help and people might believe that they have an informed opinion that is worthy of respecting and acknowledging.

I love the people saying it's their right to freedom of speech to do this, but where are these girls holding rallies to support BLM? Where are they holding events to raise money for the cause? Where is their ACTUAL effort to support this "movement"?

There is none. At this point it's the "cool" thing to do and I refuse to support people dumb enough to allow it. 99% of the people pulling this stunt will never be seen at a rally or standing up for the movement when shite hits the fan. They're a bunch of entitled brats going to school on tax dollars that want to be "cool". FEMALE AFRICAN AMERICANS going to COLLEGE for FREE because they're good at a GAME are complaining about oppression and inequality. Absolutely unreal. I, a white male, had to go to a lesser University because I couldn't get enough financial aid to make going to U of A possible on my own dime. I'll have to check my white privilege going forward for sure. frick 'em.

Be honest: do you actually know this? Do you know all of the girls personally?

edit: I fundamentally disagree with you regarding this being a hollow gesture. They've opened themselves up to a lot of criticism, so acting like they have done nothing to support their cause is just absurd. They took a risk in doing this and they invited a lot of haters into their lives. In light of those facts, it's wrong to act like this is a token gesture.
