Forgot to mention we were the Vegas favorites along with Vandy to win the whole thing
So you are saying on February 16th or whatever day the season started, we were the Vegas favorites to win the CWS???
Did we underachieve in Omaha? Absolutely, we are good enough to be playing in the finals. But the expectations for this team changed drastically over the course of the season, which is a good thing.
So on the season as a whole we definitely overachieved.
Not a person on this board truly expected to be in Omaha before the season started.

We were +300 tied with Vandy to win the CWS after supers on every book. MSU was +350/+400 behind those 2 depending on the book.

Not really but you are right from the standpoint of just the tournament. Hard to not underachieve for any team when you go 0-2.

Wichita State RHP Miller Pleimann to transfer to Arkansas.

Second favorite team gets worse for my favorite team to get better...

quote:With the caveat that we're playing well and our sporadic pitchers are pitching at their best and not their worst. We were never consistent enough to feel comfortable about Omaha and people expressed that worry all season. We had two true freshman rounding out the rotation in Omaha. In no universe was this team more equipped to make a run at the title than other teams in the tournament. We flat out did not have enough experience on the mound. I don't give two shits what some bookie in Vegas said.
we are good enough to be playing in the finals
If we had won the title this year it would have been one of the most improbable runs in recent history. That's not being a "favorite".
This season was a great season that surpassed all expectations. Period.

Damn, didn't know Noland was draft eligible next year.
Also why are we taking Pleimann now when he wasn't a take out of HS? Over 6 ERA last year with as many walks as K's.

Talked with a Shocker fan at Rocco's in Omaha on Wednesday, he saw this coming. He told me good luck to Miller, hope you get to Omaha playing for Arkansas

I believe his father is a doctor so he can be on minimal to no scholarship here if need be.
I don't think he is a closer but it would be awesome if he was - because

I know all that, still doesn't answer why we would take him now when we didn't want him a year ago out of HS and he was not good as a freshman at WSU.
If anything he could probably use the redshirt year.

Maybe he is willing to come back home for little to nothing seeing that Coach Butler is gone.
11.7 makes the whole recruiting a kid more murky than other sports. If a football player leaves the state for a smaller program it's either due to eligibility or b/c he isn't talented enough at the moment. Baseball players are passed over plenty of times due to scholly limits.
Heck...... this might simply be a tryout for him. Roster turnover in baseball is massive semester to semester. He comes during the summer - works one on one with Hobbs. Earns his keep during fall ball or he transfers out mid semester. He is young so he has plenty of time to work things out.
Look at Cowboy - he started off at a D2 school - went JUCO - walked on here - finished up at Oral Roberts.

He could be paying his own way on a prove it and hope to make the roster type of thing, we have a couple of kids coming in doing that with this class.

I wonder if Butler returns to Van Horn's staff in some capacity.

Take the football way of doing things, and hire him as a consultant/analyst and also let him recruit his arse off.

Opitz and Kjerstad make Team USA, Martin does not.
quote:
Opitz and Kjerstad, along with Casey Martin, were all invited to try out for the national team last week. Martin didn’t make the team after going 2-for-11 from the plate in four intrasquad games. He played shortstop for the Razorbacks last season where he led the SEC in errors with 23, but the Lonoke (Ark.) native played three games in center field and one at third. Martin will now go and play in the Cape Cod League with the Bourne Braves for the rest of the summer in Massachusetts.
