Does the article include talk about the big12s higher academic standards being what sealed the deal?

Kinda like Big Game Bob talking about the LB we flipped from him on NSD couldn't qualify for Big12, but could for the SEC?

I read one report that said Mosley is the one that didn't or wasn't likely to Q, but we still wanted McBride but he dropped us because of Mosley.

Don't have a clue if true.

Their HS coach is an a-hole, it sounds like - wouldn't stay on phone long enough to get an explanation, just hung up on our coach.

Nah. McBride still needed a test score, same reason we dropped Pierce.

Yeah just saw that... RD says:

quote:

Offensive lineman Andrew Mike of Tucson, (Ariz.) Sabino is expected to announce at 3:30 central time today. He'll chose Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Penn State or Florida. As stated on Sunday, I do not expect him to pick the Hogs.

So that leave Robinson, Simmons, Thomas, Young, and Jackson. We have four spots, right? I'd love four out of those five but I don't feel real confident that will happen. Is there anyone else?

Still a chance we straight up offer Wary.

He knows he is a back up plan but I've been told he would commit with a legit offer.

Thomas, Robinson, and Wary is who I think we finish with.

Andrew Mike wants to be a surgeon and that's his first goal over football. I'm just not sure we can compete with Stanford and Vandy in the pre med regard.

Honest question coming from someone who has no knowledge of the kid -- is he worth an SEC offer, especially at a position where we have a critical need for talent and can ill-afford to waste a scholarship?

I'm not wholly concerned with the star/rating system as much as I am with offer sheets, and his is sort of a red flag.

Undergrad "pre-med" at Stanford sounds nice, sure. But it's not like you couldn't get into Stanford's med school with good enough grades. The football scholarship isn't going to pay for med school.

Undergrad degrees are increasingly ambiguous, IMO. Maybe you need to go to pre-med at a great school or something. I just don't know. But that would seem silly.

Stanford is not an option for Mike, I'm pretty sure. It's Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Penn State, and Florida.

edit: You can get into most med schools as long as you distinguish yourself and score well on the MCAT. But kids in high school who have coaches in their ears often don't know that.

Arkansas actually has an excellent Pre-Medical Advisory Committee, who go above and beyond to help pre-meds get in. Out of all of the folks in my class (from all over the country), I haven't heard of a committee who has been as helpful.

The committee makes you attend meetings and submit lots of paperwork, then do an intense interview with them on campus. Then, they all gather to look at your information and write a great letter of rec to all of the schools where you apply. It really sucks at the time, but could be the difference of getting in vs not getting in.

I really hope he was given that info in some way or another.

Anyone got an update on Thomas?

Also, I kinda thought all along that we might make a late push to Flip Frazier..... Biddy doesn't seem to think that will happen.... anyone in NWA got the scoop?

Hell, Chancellor Gearhart wrote me an outstanding letter of recommendation when I applied to UAMS, and I wasn't even applying to medical school. No one in my family even knows Gearhart, but one day my dad, out of the blue, asked me if I would mind if he called Gearhart's office to ask him to write me a letter. I said, sure, knock yourself out. A week later, I had two copies of the letter--one to mail and one to read for myself. (Note: I know it may have been written by a secretary and I do not give a frick )

UA is a really great school if you take full advantage of everything it offers. I had tons of opportunities for academic and professional growth, including shadowing, internships, and research.

But again, this kid has coaches from other great schools in his ear. It would be tough to choose Arkansas over Vanderbilt if you are putting academics first and prioritizing med school over the NFL.

Yeah, they have more academically respected classes at Vandy for sure. I don't mean to sound like I'm trying to sell this kid's abilities short or anything, but GPA has to be pretty friggin good to get in to med schools, and that would be easier at U of A. If your GPA is relatively low, then you better be able to compensate on the MCAT. A lot of the players in less rigorous majors can count on free tutors and sympathetic teachers, but the PhD's over in the science depts don't really budge.

I've got lots of respect for anyone who is able to play 4 years of football at a major university, and then get in to med school or other tough graduate school programs.

That's awesome about Gearhart, btw. Was that for pharm?

Take Kenny Young off the list.

We all probably knew that, but Arkansas will not even have a hat on the table.

Getting Young was always a pipe dream. The crap about "chances are better than the experts think" was just that, crap.
