I thought this would be a cool way to start the off-season.

You can pick any former or current Bama player for 22 starters (11 O/11 D).

Set a few ground rules. Threads like this get silly when people have guys playing out of position. If a guy never played OG, don't put him at OG when he was an OT just because he might have been one of our best 5 OLs. Don't put Chance Warmack at tackle.

No insult, just picking at your list for fun.

Having John Hannah on your list is valid, but including him means we'd have to be making these lists based on the person's dominance at the time, not if they played today. Hannah was 6'2" 265 when he was drafted.

I respect Waddle at PR, but Arenas is maybe the best punt returner in the history of CFB. Waddle also hasn't gotten to the point in his career when teams refuse to kick to him. Arenas is 9 yards shy of the all-time yardage record and spent an entire year where NOBODY would punt to him. Our average starting field position that year (2009) was our own 44 because of Arenas and that defense.

Quinnen Williams only had one good year, and we didn't win a title that year. Marcel Dareus dominated folks for multiple years, ended Colt McCoy's career, had a pick 6 with spin move in the Natty, and was so dominat versus MichSt in that bowl game that the MichSt's student newspaper's sportswriter opened his write-up for the game with the line, "This game was over the moment Marcel Dareus was born."

Having Tua on your list means you won't have your starting QB healthy from mid-November on. If you pick Tua, then QB2 needs to be on the list because he'll need to start 2-4 games.

I kinda feel like it's not right for the RT to be the second best LT. I think RT should have to be a player that played RT predominantly, like DJ FLuker.

If you're going back to the seventies to get Hannah, then don't ignore the other greats from those eras.

I love Barrett Jones. But he wasn't as good as Dwight Stephenson. Hell, I'd probably have Ryan Kelly over Jones.

I'd have Marty Lyons over Payne. I'd have Barry Krauss...and maybe a few others
(Hightower, Mosley)...over Foster.

Any list without Dwight Stephenson at center is crazy IMO.

5× Pro Bowl (1983–1987)
5× First-team All-Pro (1983–1987)
NFL Man of the Year (1985)
NFL 1980s All-Decade Team
NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team
Miami Dolphins Honor Roll (1994)
2× National champion (1978, 1979)
2× Second-team All-American (1978, 1979)

Not really implying an opinion about who to pick, but I feel like Barret Jones' legacy has been tamed unfairly through time due to his NFL career. The only reason he didn't "succeed" there was due to that foot injury. He was never the same and traded his NFL career to give us the best possible chance to win the Natty. I think that the combination of his skill and success at all three positions, his record while he was here and his sacrifice make him the GOAT Lineman for Bama.

This may very well be true, yet ironically, he may not have been the best at any single position.

One observation I have regarding lists like this is as heralded as the '92 defense was it's rare that anyone lists a player from that group.

Lee Roy Jordan over Reuben at ILB. And getting historic, Don Hutson at one of the wideouts.

K - Van Tiffin

See, this is where memory or can fail you.

While he deserves hero status for the game winning kick against Auburn the cold, hard truth is that Van Tiffin was an average at best FG kicker by even Alabama's recent lowly standards.

His career percentage at Alabama was 67% with his best season being 76%.

Here are the kickers (with more than one season of kicking) that followed Tiffin:

Phillip Doyle 74.3% with two seasons >82%
Michael Proctor 71.4%. Best season 81.3%
Brian Cunningham 62.5%
Neal Thomas 70.6%
Brian Bosticks 73.1%
Jamie Christensen 69%. Best season 76%
Leigh Tiffin 74.8%. Best season 85.7%
Jeremy Shelley 80%. Best season 100%
Cade Foster 56.8%
Adam Griffith 69.5%. Best season 75%.
Joseph Bulovas 75.9%. Best season 78%.

You can make a serious argument for his son, but if dad was kicking today folks would talk about him like they did Griff and Bul.
