I had one in 2006. John Blackburn spoke at the main ceremonies.

I'm glad we didn't have one. I wouldn't trust the university to bring in someone I was interested in listening to.

In fairness to them, most of your classmates have zero interest in the Tottenham Hotspur FC.

I'm not a Spurs fan.

Just tell her never to give up, don't let people tell you that you can't do it, anything is possible, dream big. That simulates 99% of these speeches.

If Charlie Day isn't the speaker, then I don't want them.
He really gave a great speech. It's all on YouTube if you want to look it up.

I don't think there was one in December either. Commencement addresses normally suck, so it's better this way. The day should be about the graduates.

Sidenote: It's actually pretty amazing how many famous people you can lure with "honorary degrees" Especially considering a lot of famous people dropped out or skipped college all together.

There hasn't been one for as long as I remember and I've been going to graduations fairly consistently since 2010. I believe in the late 2000s there was a controversial speaker and the University just said frick it and decided not to have speakers anymore. I honestly approve of it. There are already something like 5 different Spring Commencements and most people leave right after their/their kid's name is called anyway. Adding a commencement speaker would only make it worse. If they added a commencement speaker I'd hope they'd go the way of Tulane (and maybe other schools) and have a unified commencement that had the graduation speaker and then have the commencement by college/school where they actually call the person's name and they cross the stage.

Same. I'm glad we didn't have one either. The overall ceremony barely took 2 hours, wasn't really a need for a speaker.

Nailed it.

Always depends on the speaker. My son and daughter-in-law just graduated from UGA. Ernie Johnson, Jr gave the commencement and it was awesome...the rest of the ceremony was meh, but everyone was riveted while Ernie spoke...
