For being the hero we needed at the time despite not being a big time receiver, Maze. He also filled the void left behind when Arenas graduated at PR.

I honestly think it might be Devonta Smith. He might be the best player to ever suit up for Bama.

Kevin Norwood. That dude was clutch and always stepped up in the big moment.

Had a huge drop against AU that would have likely been a TD or at least a big play. Other than that, he was pretty good.
I'd go with Stewart. He made a huge TD catch against AU to take control of the game in the 2nf half. He also made a huge catch against Clemson in the 4th quarter of the championship game when Bama really needed it.

Stewart also had a huge catch in the Tennessee game on the game winning drive.

Yes he did! I believe it was a back shoulder catch for a first down to keep the winning TD drive alive.

“Who’s the most underrated receiver in Saban era?”

*whole state of Alabama answers Norwood*

Huh. Must not be that underrated then.

Has to be Slade the wildcat Bolden.

Never seen a guy with so much raw athleticism.

ArDarius Stewart

His catch in triple coverage against Florida.

I can't find the clip of another Alabama WR making a catch in triple coverage - pretty sure it was against Tennessee. It might predate Saban though, but I thought it was Norwood or Bell.

Reckon you’re talking about DJ Hall

YouTube

What a cautionary tale that guy is. Metchie just went in the 2nd round and you can’t tell me Hall was significantly less talented than him. The difference being that Metchie is a hard nosed, humble, student of the game that honed is craft. Whereas Hall was lazy and had a bad attitude

Yup, that's it. Couldn't remember if that moment predated Saban's arrival or not. Thanks!

DJ Hall would have started over Metchie based on talent alone. However, as you say, his bad attitude really hurt him. Guy had first round ability but just too many negative qualities that made him all but undraftable. I've heard a lot of people say that Saban really gave Hall a negative grade to NFL scouts and told teams to stay away from him. That might all just be BS, however, but I've heard more than one person say this.

Definitely going with ArDarius. Guy had tons of absolutely huge plays in his career at critical moments, especially 2015.

- 3rd down catch vs Tennessee
- broke the Auburn game open
- catch vs Florida in SECCG
- huge catch on 3rd down vs Clemson

That’s typically how overrated/underrated topics tend to go.

I think Stewart is the answer. Although his NFL career didn’t work out, I think he was closer in talent to guys like Metchie (not saying he’s as good as him) then he was to guys like Norwood. He had the clutch factor while also having numerous impressive and physical plays. Yet it seems he doesn’t get talked about as much as a guy like Norwood even though he was better.

The thing about Norwood and Stewart is they were well-regarded and known to Alabama fans when they played in Tuscaloosa. Norwood was our #1 possession receiver in 2012 and came up clutch on that final drive again LSU. ArDarius Stewart was our speedster who could break the game wide open getting behind the defense on deep routes. He was definitely appreciated by most Bama fans for his play in both 2015 and 2016.

Both guys got tons of love from the fans and press, even though they were both playing second fiddle to guys like Cooper and Ridley. That’s why I don’t think guys like them apply here. I’m thinking of names like Brandon Gibson, Darius Hanks, etc.

Considering everyone is saying these two, I guess they aren't very underrated. I know Norwood was my first thought.

They are underrated to everyone outside of Bama fans.

Since everyone has gone with Stewart and Norwood, I’ll throw some other names out there.

Robert Foster and Cam Sims. Neither one of them made much of a splash at Bama, but both are still on NFL rosters 5 years after leaving.

Barely getting the ball and still going on to have a relatively lengthy pro career, I think counts as underrated.

Similarly, few seem to mention how great Jeudy was anymore because of what Smith did in 2020. I wouldn't call him the most underrated, but what he did has taken an undeserved back seat
