This is a surprise.

The timing is the surprise but I think that everyone believes it is better to have a month to get a hire lined up unofficially (or at least the framework for it). I believe they even get the 5 day dwell period after the last regular season game right? However so many openings now that I think somebody is going to be left with no coach and an open portal window.

It isn't a surprise it happened though. Dude had the opponent clear the bleachers out by the third quarter twice in Death Valley at night in less than 12 months. He was cooked as the kids say.

The problem is most of the coaches with established resumes that'd be the targets for a job like Florida, LSU, and PSU are seemingly pretty locked in where they're at right now. Lane Kiffin is the only guy with a resume fit for those types of job that seems gettable and I don't know if he's listening if they're 11-1 with a trip to Atlanta and/or CFP on the horizon.

Brian Kelly joins an elite group:

Gus Malzahn and Jim McElwain were also fired after making the SECCG in their first seasons as HC at Auburn and Florida, respectively.

I personally think Lane would be nuts to leave OM for anything that isn't his dream job, neither of which (USC, Alabama) want anything to do with him. It's a place that will happily tolerate his personality, his tendency to completely shite the bed in random games, and a bunch of 8-4/9-3 seasons, all while giving him pretty good compensation and NIL money to spend.

He goes 8-4 or 9-3 his first 3 years at LSU and he's fired.

I wonder how many of their players hit the portal. The 30 day transfer window opens tomorrow for them.

Rumblings now that Woodward is in trouble too. The governor is pissed off and is stepping in and in Louisiana the governor has a CACALOAD of power where the university is concerned. Goes back to the days of the Kingfish I guess …

That's not a thing anymore.

It's 15 days after 5 days of the new coach being hired.

I think Kiff might jump for Florida, probably not LSU, but maybe.

Other than that he may go to Ohio State if it ever got there, Texas, Michigan, Miami, or USC (agreed, unlikely.)

And dont forget a never ending supply of absolute primo poontang. Lane has his priorities. Those slutty catholic girls in Louisiana dont have nothing on those mississippi girls.

He’s regularly putting up 10- and 11- win seasons, now, at Ole Miss. I doubt LSU would be much of a problem for him.

Thank God we aren't in this year's coaching hire derby.

Nothing but retreads or unproven coaches from the Sunbelt with potential.

The best candidates out there should be decent hires for a Kentucky or Arkansas...not LSU or Florida.

My guess is Drink to Florida and LSU shoots their wad for Lane with Sumrall as their fall back pick.

I want to see them hire Jimbo Fisher.

Scott Woodward hired him away from Florida State when he was the AD at Texas A&M.

Yep, it sure did and I also think this is going to be the trend for a while. I know we've said over and over, but with the transfer portal and examples like Indiana. Coaches aren't going to get the grace period they used to get. Though I'd say Kelly got basically four years and really didn't do anything with his opportunity.
