He will count as a scholarship against football, not basketball.

Four-star forward Langston Wilson is the latest addition the Alabama basketball’s 2021 recruiting class. The 6-foot-9-inch junior college standout talked about his decision, his role models and what could be a special year on the recruiting trail.

Q: What was the pitch from Nate Oats and the Alabama staff?

A: They wanted me to come in and, more or less, fill in that spot of Herb Jones. That was kind of the biggest thing, hearing that and then their play style. With me not being a traditional four man and the way that they play – they get up and down in transition and they get up a lot of shots and space the floor out really well and they get the ball up in the open court – so that is an area that I tend to like.

Q: How much work happens behind the scenes to get to where you are now?

A: A ton. Even during the pandemic I was doing a lot of things: getting in the gym, doing body work, waking up at 5:30 in the morning to get in the gym to go lift and work on different agility things and different strength things.

A lot of people just look at it as, ‘he just happens to be one of the kids and it was given to him,’ when you know that is not the case at all or the situation at all. Behind the scenes a lot of people do not know that I was, two weeks ago, 185 pounds and my last weigh-in was at 192, so it has been a lot of work and things like that I have been putting in, just trying to improve my game.

I try being a great teammate, both on and off the court – on the court and on the sideline – and then just trying to improve on a bunch of little things, things that will help me take my game to the next level with ball handling and decision making and shot selection and things like that. All those are things that people do not see. People just see the high-flying dunks and things like that, but behind the scenes there is a lot more being done; you do not just go into the gym and dunk all day.

Q: How good can this recruiting class be?

A: I feel as though we have the potential to be the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. I feel as though even with the pieces that we have already – we are already – set to be a team that a lot of people will not want to play. If we can get commitments from players like Charles (Bediako) and from Caleb (Houstan) – those two guys, Charles being someone at the center position who can move, he is very mobile and very athletic, he blocks shots and can space out and knock down a trail three and then you have Caleb who is just a straight sniper, in a sense, with his shot-making ability – so with all that I feel as though we really have the potential to be the No. 1 class in America. It could be highly possible. It could be a situation where we could end up with the No. 1 recruiting class in basketball and football, so that’s exciting.

Q: Who are some of the guys you have modeled your game after?

A: Growing up, probably my idol for basketball, I would have to say would be my dad. He played at Villanova, he played overseas, not really the most recognizable name, but someone I saw that was from his family and his situation that went out and did it. One of the first people in his family, his immediate family, to get a degree and things like that. So that was my big role model basketball-wise. Kind of a small-town kid, country boy, going in and going to Villanova and being there for four years and having an impact.

Guys that I like to model my game after, I like to mix my game between Derrick Jones Jr. and Brandon Ingram – Brandon Ingram being someone at my size with a freakish skillset, being able to handle the ball and being an elite scorer from the mid-range and being a knock down shooter from 3 (point range), also being someone that you can run your offense through and who is someone that is going to score a lot of points; and I like Derrick Jones Jr. because he is someone I can compare my athleticism to and then also, the way he is defensively, someone who can switch one through five legitimately and is a lockdown defender and a great transition scorer and finisher.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do off the basketball court?

A: We have a lake behind my school, I really like to go every day. I probably go out there for 2 hours. I just like to go out by the lake and chill, and sometimes I just walk around the lake and enjoy the scenery. There is a ton of fish and things like that in the lake. I just kind of sit there, it is kind of like my inner peace almost, if that makes sense. It is just a little area where I can go and sit down and chill and just be cool.

Four-star wing Wesley Cardet has long been a name on the recruiting circuit. He holds more than 15 offers and could see his options expand even further this season. For now, however, he’s starting to prioritize some schools over others. Below, The West Oaks (Fla.) Academy star discusses three programs with which he’s had frequent contact.

ON A RECENT ZOOM CALL WITH K-STATE

“It was a good call. I had talked to them before but they just told me that they really want me, and I could feel it.”

ON WHAT HE KNOWS ABOUT K-STATE

“I knew a little about them going in because my teammate (Selton Miguel) went there and he’s there right now so I was aware of them and some things about them going in. I know it's a good program and I also see that they like to have fun. I saw that sometimes, they do, like, fun activities like break Nerf guns out at practice and mess around.”

ON IF HAVING MIGUEL AT K-STATE MAKES HIM MORE LIKELY TO LAND IN MANHATTAN

“I wouldn’t say it’s a big reason or that it will make me more likely to go there, but knowing I have a teammate there made me want to look into a lot more. K-State has lots of good things about it, but a lot of these schools have good things. I’m really looking into a lot of them right now and just trying to see.”

ON A RECENT AUBURN OFFER

“Auburn offered and they really stressed that I would be a perfect fit for them. They just recruited (five-star forward) Jabari Smith. Now that they have him, they are looking for a guard to go with him and they think I’m the perfect guard for that. They think I’d be a good addition to the team."

ON JABARI SMITH

“I don’t know him. I know of him. I’ve seen him play on video and stuff. He’s a good player for sure”

ON PERCEIVED FAVORITE ALABAMA

“I’m still talking to them and they’re still in the mix.”

ON THE ALLURE OF THE CRIMSON TIDE

“I really like the system there. I like the coaches, too but the system is great. I like how they use players like me. They showed me that and I feel like I would fit there.”

ON A COMMITMENT TIMETABLE

“I probably won’t trim thin\gs down until the end of the winter or so. It’ll be later in the season for sure.”

RIVALS REACTION: Alabama has long been seen as the leader here and may well still be, but K-State has held multiple zoom calls with Cardet over the last few weeks and things seem to be intensifying between the four-star prospect and the Wildcats. Auburn is the most recent to enter the fray. And while things don’t seem hyper-serious yet, the Tigers are on a recruiting roll and shouldn’t be counted out. All three programs seem like safe bets to survive when Cardet trims his list.

This summer, Oak Mountain (Al.) center Will Shaver emerged as nationally ranked prospect in the 2022 class. The 6-foot-10 stretch big climbed into the Rivals 150, while picking up countless offers from high-major programs.

He discusses recruitment, weight-loss, and more.

Which programs have been in constant communication?

Shaver: “Virginia Tech, Alabama, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Iowa State, and Georgia.”

Who did you grow up watching?

Shaver: “Alabama, I was a huge fan growing up.”

Briefly describe your game for those who don’t know much about you?

Shaver: “Stretch-5 that can do it all, I can score in the post and also hit the three consistently. I shot 40% during my sophomore season. I’ve also got defensive upside, lost 40 lbs. over quarantine and it’s helped my athleticism and mobility a lot, I’m moving better than I ever have.”

Yep. Per NCAA Bylaws, multisport athletes who play football must count toward football limits and any who play basketball along with any sport(s) other than football must count toward basketball limits.

McKinstry plans to enroll early at UA in Jan 2021. He's grown to 6-1/189 (per his best friend's dad).

What kind of basketball prospect is this guy? I assume he'll be a backup at best?

He ain’t gonna play. Maybe in Garbage time. But lets not tell him that until his NLI is in.

Also if he is enrolling in Jan. Does that mean he will practice with us and be on the team this season?

Tbh, Idk. It seems to me the time, focus and energy demands for fb and bb conflict so much that I don't think it's feasible for a dedicated fb player to also be a substantial contributor on the bb team. I don't recall anyone ever doing both.

There have been a few to do it like Charlie Ward and Bruce Ellington.

They were both much, much better basketball recruits than McKinstry though. I think he's good enough to do more than your typical walk-on because he's got legitimate power conference caliber athleticism, but I wouldn't expect him to be a star in both sports. He's a significantly better football player.

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that I thought he would do as well as either of them. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he's only on the basketball team for one season.

Can you imagine the blow back if he has a major injury playing basketball?

It would be bad, but it would also be a bunch of idiot FOGs who don't understand that half the football team plays a ton of pickup basketball in the offseason.

That's what I've been thinking too.

Yeah, some ranted that Waddle shouldn't have been returning kickoffs, even though the same injury could occur playing WR.

There is a reason that the rules concerning kickoffs encourage the fair catch-touchback . Its the most dangerous play in football, and has been close to being eliminated altogether. I hope we dont put Smith back there. Maybe during the playoffs, but not vs Ms St.. Now catching punts is a different thing altogether. That takes a different level of skill to field the punts. You have to put your best punt receiver back for that. Anyway, he he wants to play bball and is good enough to get playing time, let him do it.
There have been a few SEC players that have done it.

There’s also a reason targeting is the harshest penalty in football.

Early signing period preview: Latest on top 15 undecided seniors (247, Bossi)

quote:

Caleb Houstan

247Sports Composite rank: 8

Contenders: Alabama, Duke, Michigan and Virginia

Will he sign early: Very likely.

Latest buzz: So far, all indications are that Houstan should be ready to announce his college decision at some point during the early signing period. If he doesn’t decide in time, it will be shortly after. One of the best jump shooters in the class, Alabama and Michigan have been getting the most buzz for his commitment. The Crimson Tide has been hot with Canadian prospects, can they continue it with Houstan?

Charles Bediako

247Sports Composite rank: 23

Contenders: Alabama, Duke, Michigan, Ohio State and Texas.

Will he sign early: Good chance.

Latest buzz: Bediako hasn’t yet announced a commitment date but word behind the scenes has been that he should decide by the end of the early signing period. An early decision isn’t a lock, but it also shouldn’t go too much beyond the end of the period (Nov. 18th) if he doesn’t sign early. Alabama looks to be in really good shape for the imposing post presence from Canada.
