There needs to be penalties to prevent kids jumping because they were bought and paid for.

Also, no nil deals until after your first year.

I’m all for kids benefiting from there name and image but this system is broken.

Or they can transfer at will but have no NIL deal or to have NIL you have to sign a contract

Maybe school-related NIL collective payouts, but no one could prevent them from individual contracts. Those private businesses providing "sponsorship" indirectly to get players to specific locations could be more innovative about the structure and details of their contracts with the player as an individual.

Does anybody really know how these deals work? Is the income reported and taxed? Cash payouts? I would really like to know.

For instance, after Bond's catch, somebody shelled out a lot of money for tee shirts and other stuff. Now that he is gone, all that sunk cost is worthless. Somebody got left holding the bag big time. Got to believe a player is going to get knee capped over one of these deals eventually. It's crazy.

This genie ain’t ever going to go back in the bottle no matter how many fans demand it on message boards, because the courts are 100% on the players’ side here. It is what it is. We adapt or die. It’s that simple.

Courts can dictate that players have the right to make money off their NI&L, but they can't dictate the contractual obligations between schools, players, the NCAA, and sponsors.

I've said it umpteen times: the entire rosters of the Patriots, Titans, and Falcons didn't suddenly become free agents when their coaches left. Alabama's roster shouldn't be either. It makes absolutely no sense to give college kids a benefit that the pros don't even have.

If a player can successfully argue “restraint of trade” issues the courts absolutely can dictate those things, and as noted they are awfully sympathetic to those arguments these days.

Someone on the Rant the other day tried to tell me that the USSC in its 9-0, nonpartisan ruling that opened the door to this “violated NCAA rules,” like they care six cacas about NCAA rules.

I don’t like this stuff anymore than you or anyone else grinding about it, but it is what it is and it will sort itself out. It should be the final thing that convinces people once and for all that in 2024, this is a business, nothing more or less.

We are pretty much in agreement that Bond got a deal in place and tried to leverage staying for more $$ from Alabama?

If so, why in the world would Saban stay for that kind of shite year in and year out?

I'd be interested in seeing how these NIL deals are really setup.

How many advertisements have you seen featuring a college player? 1? 2? I sure as hell don't see them.

Almost like these types of things are actually falling afoul of federal tax laws. I'm just waiting for the day when someone points out that 90% of NIL deals never actually use the "N", the "I", or the "L".

And following up, the reason the pro teams don’t become free agents at the end of the season is that they have agreed to things that prevent that in collective bargaining in which the players and teams both had a voice. People here want it to go back to the way it’s always been because they liked it and they think players should be satisfied in this billion dollar business with four years of schooling, but that ship has irrevocably sailed.

Agreed, but there needs to be some regulation on it, no?

Sure but people are going to have to accept that the players are going to get a major voice in that process. I think that’s what grates at some people the most. They don’t want the players to have a voice or profit in a huge way, because they have an idealized view of what this stuff should be. Someone either on this board or the Rant came right out and said the fans ought to be the bosses because they provide the money. I think the fans are being completely ignored in this stuff right now, and that’s wrong, but they cannot be the bosses.

NIL isn't really the problem - it's the portal that needs to be fixed. A little over a month ago, Isiah Bond had a catch worthy of a Daniel Moore painting & today he's riding around in a Lamborghini in Austin. It's absurd.

There are easy fixes like changing the time of year the portal opens & scaling back the transfers to one transfer after your sophmore year.

Ffs we've had the portal for five years - do the guys at the NCAA actually think this is working well?

JMO but the portal should open only once per year and that would be after spring. If a player didn't want to go thru spring drills at the current program then he could opt out.

One time per year. Help the coaches try to manage the program.

Seems categorically unfair that the transfer portal is basically a one way street when a coach leaves a program. Everyone can poach our roster but we can only go after Washington & Arizona players? At the very least, the portal should be delayed until a week after an HC is announced so ADs aren’t forced to rush the hire and that the new HC at least gets a shot at talking with the player before every other school has gotten in his ear.

What if we were going to hire DeMeco but had to wait until the Texans were eliminated? Our roster would be depleted.

I understand that NIL is tough to police. Would be great to have some sort of NCAA Clearinghouse for NIL deals but that probably won’t ever happen. They can still put guard rails on the portal though. Would be great to return to making players sit if they transfer within their conference. Would also be great if they could hammer someone for tampering because that is clearly a rampant problem.

The courts may be able to dictate that the players can make money in an unlimited fashion.

What they cannot dictate are the terms of the length of a contract...the scholarship...between as school and a player. The NCAA can make all scholarships three year contracts. The player can still make as much off NIL as he wants.

Why can't the Patriots, Falcons, and Titans now suddenly move? If a college kid can argue "restraint of trade", a professional player can also.

The Supreme Court upheld the lower court’s decision that NCAA restrictions on “education-related benefits” for college athletes violated antitrust law. That says nothing about the length of a contract. If the NCAA says that college scholarships are three year binding contracts...similar to an NFL contract...the player is still free to earn as much money as he can.

Yeah this a huge problem. These guys hit the portal on Monday & by Tuesday they've decided on where to tranfer.

College football in general has a transparency problem. The process of hiring coaches is laughable. To hire a coach, you have to kiss Sexton's ring & leak whatever names he tells you to. Then those schools shite themselves & wildly overpay for their current coach. The coach tweets how much he loves his job & idiots rejoice.

Would be 100% supportive of that and it would IMO absolutely pass legal muster. See that’s how this needs to be approached, not “make it like it used to be.”
