On3 keeps saying Jalil Bethea is visiting on 9/23 and 247 keeps saying 10/23 - not sure which is correct.

Meh, we're competing in the NIL space in both sports. But we aren't competing in the "My commitment is based on NIL so the payment has to be massive" space in either sport.
Since it's slow around, I've probably seen this a half dozen times, and it's really the perfect way of wording our situation. We're competing but avoiding bidding wars. And whenever anyone got in trouble for paying players before NIL, it was always because they won a bidding war and somebody was pissed.
And now, you start winning bidding wars and having large discrepancies between players, you're gonna end up with a bunch of pissed off, resentful teammates. One player can make a huge difference in basketball, but balance usually wins rings.

But football got a brand new playing surface and a new weight room that they didn’t need. Pathetic

I wish someone would come out and ask why they think we're all stupid. Construction costs aren't coming down anytime soon unless the economy totally craters. Everyone knows this. And if that happens they'll just use it as the new excuse, so it makes absolutely no difference.

It’s been excuse after excuse for YEARS now. Through multiple coaches. Avery wanted a nice renovation or a new arena and didn’t get it. Oats has made it known he wants a new arena and isn’t getting it. I’m sure Grant wanted one as well. We gotta make sure football gets every little thing they want first and then we’ll see if there’s any crumbs left for basketball. That’s how it’s always been. The price isn’t going down…it’s time to build it or risk losing Oats in the future. He’ll tell you all day that he doesn’t care about the arena as much as we do, but it DOES matter to him. And it’s sad that we can’t commit to anything.

Yea it is a pretty sad situation. It may cost more now but Bama can get the money if they put the pressure on the right people . Schools a lot smaller with even smaller budgets seem to be getting it done when they are committed. Oats, like you said , says all the right things but it will be interesting when some blue bloods or Michigan jobs come open if we haven’t made a commitment to basketball. We caught lightning in a bottle and haven’t seen sustained success like this since Wimp. Time to step up

I'm conflicted. On the one hand, the program definitely needs a new venue to take it to the next level and probably to keep our coach.
On the other hand, I love being able to buy season tickets.

Right. A "one time" payable over 5 years minimum of $12,500, max of $250,000 for TP seating will be a sticker shock to some of the new gym enthusiasts. I am in the small minority of long time season ticket holders, back into the '70's, who like my seats in Coleman. With only 10,500 seats, the new gym will not leave much if any space for anybody but big donors. I will, though, be looking for rafter seats I can afford.

I understand
But I will also say having both ( same venue and coach) is going to be nearly impossible . Plus , we are the butt of jokes with our arena . Only UGA is worse IMO and that should be unacceptable

Of course they are.
After the football scrimmage on Saturday, Byrne spoke for a few minutes before Saban, and he said something along the lines of, "new basketball arena... we're still fully on board and pursuing this, but haven't been able to figure out the latest shortfall due to rising construction costs over the past year."
Then he literally launches into a discussion about how they're pricing escalators versus more elevators at BDS.
It's just absolutely patronizing and absurd at this point.

Agreed. He must either think we are stupid and will go along with it or he is a complete moron and actually thinks costs are going to go down. That would be the only sector to see any price/cost go down of all the sectors. Maybe it's both

Then he should be fired. Is that a bit of an extreme reaction? Maybe, but it's his job to figure it out. Lots of other ADs have managed to do it, and they haven't also been plagued by a series of PR shite shows.

I don't know how interest rates would affect building the arena, but just to play devil's advocate, interest rates are insane right now. Those will go back down eventually.

Recent interest rates at or near zero are the "insane" rates. They are now returning to what has historically been "normal". If the University is using current interest rates as an excuse to delay a new arena, that is nothing but a canard.

Yeah, this particular study has been ongoing since at least early 2018. How much have costs increased, and how much potential revenue have they missed out on during the past four or five years?
I would also have more sympathy for these "financial hardships" if they seemed to be affecting other things — we just spent another $110m on BDS, $145m on Tutwiler, and we're currently moving forward with a men’s and women’s golf facility, for example.
Even trying to be a realist with the current state of the economy, it's strange to open an article and notice that Vanderbilt is spending $300m as we speak, and we just can't seem to make this one thing happen due to the current climate... again.

We also just raised $1.3 billion for the University for the Rising Tide Campaign. Can they do something similar for athletics? This whole thing just stinks

I guess we're getting there, one $16 Coleman cheeseburger at a time.
