I lean the other direction here.
Assuming we have a few players that can get in the paint and make basic reads, I think we still need someone who could eat emergency minutes at the 4/5.
Oats' brief comments in the article Alabama Fan posted above are interesting.
They suggest the players he may still add are wings that can facilitate more than traditional point guards.
He mentions Holloway but also Wrightsell and Mallette in terms of "playing some point" but emphasizes the style lends itself to simply having wings that can can drive and pass.
The big question mark is really who all among the newcomers will be able to consistently drive against good defenses and score or assist.

I'll feel ok about our frontcourt as long as Taylor Bol Bowen stays healthy. He's going to be an absolute monster defensively in this system. Williamson moves well enough to play the 4 too; I wouldn't be surprised to see him and Sherrell playing together some.
We just need one more playmaker somewhere at 1-3 IMO.

I'd argue that w have had combo guards at point more often than pure point guards under Oats anyway. The Final Four team really was less about Sears on the ball constantly. Estrada being a second scorer was underrated in retrospect. Youngblood just couldn't provide that aspect...his game was more about hitting catch and shoots.

Fland’s agent Mike Miller played at Florida- thus the Florida predictions for Boogie.
Mike Miller is an agent now? Loved him back in Orlando. Florida must have a huge bag after that title.

Surprised everyone is ignoring Bethea who Oats bragged on specifically in this regard. Did he call him elite at driving and scoring or passing with great vision?

I think Miller was/is a high school Bball coach and transitioned to an agent when NIL kicked off. He and Udonis Haslem have a good podcast, on occasion he talks about it.

Not ignoring anyone but we haven't seen any of these transfers or freshmen play under Oats or against SEC competition. Regarding Bethea, he averaged 19 minutes a game, 7pts, 1 assist, and 1 TO a game; so, until he shows he can handle the lead guard position in our conference, there's going to be questions.
Several people thought Youngblood was gonna be the guy that made the difference for us this season but that wasn't the case. He turned out to be slower, not very athletic, and wasn't a strong ball handler.
For this coming season, I would have preferred bringing in a guy that at least had the numbers and body of work running the lead guard where he played. We held out for Philon instead.
Like I said, I believe Oats can work it out but obviously a true experienced PG is better than a PG by committee. And saying it doesn't matter because anyone can initiate Oats offense is sugar coating the issue. Did our offense run as well when Aden ran point this past season compared to Philon? No. So, obviously it does matter who is bringing the ball up the court and initiating the offense.

Yeah, I agree that we really don't know with players like Bethea yet. I'd add that it's much less important who brings the ball up in this offense as it is who gets the ball up top when a good defense is set and needs to create something with a screen off the dribble.
That's been Herb, JQ, Miller, Estrada, Philon, Sears the past few seasons. Shack was less affective as was Holloway, but he has room to improve since he easily has the ability to get in the paint. Like you say, Youngblood couldn't do that. Oats implied that he felt like Wrightsell and Mallette could too but they haven't really so far.

I’d be cautious about expecting too much from Wrightsell. I think he can still contribute but just name the player..Kobe, Durant, Cousins, Klay Thompson..nobody is ever the same after an Achilles injury

This is probably a lot of copium, but after taking a step back I feel decent about our team next year, especially if we add another facilitator. We won't get a bunch of preseason hype, but the ingredients are there to be really good if we stay healthy.
Veteran guards who can all shoot (Holloway, Mallette, Wrightsell, Bethea), a really good stretch 4 for our system (Bol Bowen), two skilled 7 footers (Sherrell, Williamson), and a dawg to eat minutes at the 3/4 (Bristow). Really good freshman class to add into it, too. Excited about Jemison in particular.
Don't sleep on Holloway. He had a year to get acquainted with the system and now he gets a summer knowing he's 'the guy' at point.

at least 3 of those guys were 30+ (Durant was almost 30). That matters too.

Not a great three point shooter at all, but the kind of playmaker we need. I presume this is why the Keonte Jones holdup. We probably want Claude over Keonte
