I am no longer concerned in any way with basketball recruiting. I keep up just to stay informed, but I am very confident that most of whoever we end up with will be pretty good players at worst. First time I have ever felt that way.
Reminds me of the Saban era when I stopped following football recruiting because I knew we would end up with a top 3 class regardless of what happened with a particular recruit.
I don't think I'll ever stop following basketball recruiting, but so glad to be done with the cursed days of freaking out over the WCS and Cat Barbers of the world and their rash or stupid decision-making.

I quit following recruiting in general.
More so in basketball than football. You are lucky if you have a player for more than one year.

I don’t see him listed on the list of targets on the first page.
The first page is probably way out of date by now.

I think it's mostly because now we're squarely in the mix for like 10-15 good prospects, so the odds of signing 3-4 of them are pretty good. Back in the days of Grant and Avery, and Gottfried to an extent, that number was more like 5, so there was just no margin for error. They could whiff on our top couple of guys on the board and the class tanks, with no portal to make up for it.

The days of whiffing on our top target(who was only rated like top 60 at best)only to be stuck battling Ole Miss, Georgia, and UAB for some 3* kid are hopefully behind us

Grant's biggest failure was using just one line to catch fish instead of a net. By all accounts, Grant worked the recruiting trail hard but put all of his effort into just a few recruits and had no plan B to fall back on partly because he was so honest with other recruits (like Pookie Powell being told to wait on Cat Barber). He also refused to over-recruit which absolutely screwed us depth-wise when we had the inevitable transfers. He had some horrible luck with some of those top prospects we were after, but in the end Grant was just too good of a guy to succeed on the recruiting trail which doomed his 9-10 scholarship teams.

Twitter digest (compliments of Blake Byler) of Coach Oats’ appearance on Hey Coach tonight:
quote:
Nate Oats just joined Hey Coach.
"So, are we talking football?"
Nate Oats said Alabama officially starts practice for this season on Monday.
Nate Oats on Hey Coach: "This might be the deepest, most complete, best roster we've had since we've been here."
Nate Oats on Hey Coach: "Labaron Philon has been way better than I thought he was gonna be. And he was a highly rated kid. He's gonna be right in the mix."
Nate Oats asked about being possibly preseason #1 on Hey Coach: "I'd rather be ranked #1 in the last poll than the first poll, but being ranked #1 in both the last poll and the first poll is fine too."
Nate Oats noted that Latrell Wrightsell was the 4th-most efficient player in the country last season, after being outside the top-500 at CSU Fullerton the season before.
As Nate Oats signed off on Hey Coach, he put his hands on Latrell Wrightsell's shoulder, and made a declaration.
"Half of the best backcourt in the country right here."
Nate Oats: "We've got a special team, and we know it. ... They've all got great attitudes. They've all been working their tails off.
"I wouldn't miss anything you could possibly be at this season because it's going to be a special season."

He always phrases it in a way that can mean he thought they'd be pretty good and they're one and done good or he thought they'd be a warm body and 5 fouls but they are pretty good.

Oats is feeling it before official practices even start. We are going to be elite

the good news is we are getting him on campus for a visit. The bad news .. BYU’s NIL deal is prob about as much as our NIL budget for the whole team. I would put him as a long shot right now .. never know once get on campus but…

Mormons spending that money on him like that? Someone tell AJ about Curse of Ham.

First, why does a couple million in NIL matter so much to a guy who'd.be a top 3 draft pick even if he plays nowhere next season?
Also, BYU? Really? Is he a Mormon? Because you'd need to pay me an obscene amount of money to even think about spending a year at BYU, much less actually do it.

I think that's what is working against us. Alabama is on the other end of the country and one of our best selling points is that we play an NBA system that gets guys to the league. He's going to be a (probably the) top prospect regardless. He goes to BYU, gets to play near family, gets total control on what he wants to do offensively AND gets a massive bag to boot. I can get the logic behind it.

That’s what I was thinking when he went down in the tournament.
I’m not sure Bama has ever had a guy that good who was that underrated.
I’m not sure it matters against UCONN with the mismatches down low but to make that run without him is incredible.

That is absolutely wild. The LDS Church ain't playing a around. There are so many jokes I want to make about what is in his NIL package, so many
. How many soaking sheets does it come with? OK I'm done, I'm done.
