Just A Minute: Alabama Men's Basketball Doesn't Have to Look Far For Inspiration (SI)

While the Crimson Tide men's team remains an enigma, the women are making an impressive NCAA Tournament charge.

Aren’t they suppose to avoid rematches? I don’t want them again…no thanks

Depends who is really choosing the match ups. Those controlled by tv contracts like some rematches unless it's conference. Like I said earlier, I could see them put us up against S. Dakota St, Iona or Davidson in the first round or UCLA or Houston in the second. Usually, you might see a rematch in only one of the first two rounds.

For Auburn, you might see them try to set up a rematch with UCONN since they played earlier in the year and UCONN beat them in 2OT

This take will probably age like milk, but I would be OK with that. They're the stereotypical experienced, well coached mid-major full of white kids who never miss open shots that'll torch the frick out of our joke of a defense, but in our first matchup they had absolutely no means of slowing us down and I doubt they have gotten bigger or more athletic since November.

I actually kind of agree.

Our krytonite, other than ourselves, are athletic teams that drive the rim and don't mind slowing down combined with long defenders.

People gotta relax with articles like that lmfao. Alabama is a 5-seed with one regular season game left. The women's team has to hope they can win one more SECT game just to have a shot at being in the first 4 out. There is no comparison.

Mens team: A good team that is very inconsistent. Could potentially make a Sweet 16 run.

Womens team: A below average NIT type team that got hot the last 2 games. Probably won’t make the NCAAT and will be an early exit 100% if they do.

Yeah they're smallish and play fast. We dropped 104 on them despite a not great shooting night because they couldn't stop us from getting into the paint. We made 2/3 of our 2pt attempts. They could definitely beat us in a shootout, but I just don't see them having any way to limit us. I'd be pretty surprised if we lost to a typical mid-major (not teams like Gonzaga, Houston or Memphis) who plays at our pace.

Nate Oats on LSU: "The biggest thing since the last time we played them is (Xavier) Pinson's playing. He didn't against us. And then (Darius) Days got hurt and didn't play the whole game against us. They're both back and playing well. They'll have their full roster."

Possible 1st round matchups that fit the "slow, good against drive, good at making 2s and drawing fouls" template that should be a red flashing light if we draw them:

#s are only vs Top 150 Opponents (to weed out dominating terrible teams)

San Diego State (currently a #9 on BracketMatrix)
- #276 2PT% (43.9%)
- #285 Tempo (66.2)
- #2 2PT Defense (41.5%)
- #82 Defensive Rebound % (27.3%)

Creighton (currently a #10 on BracketMatrix)
- #48 2PT% (51.7%)
- #215 Tempo (67.5)
- #8 2PT Defense (43.8%)
- #92 Defensive Rebound % (27.6%)

Wake Forest (currently a #10 on BracketMatrix)
- #7 2PT% (56.3%)
- #112 Tempo (69.6)
- #26 2PT Defense (46.4%)
- #81 Defensive Rebound % (27.2%)

Loyola Chicago (currently a #12 on BracketMatrix)
- #12 2PT% (55.0%)
- #325 Tempo (64.9)
- #134 2PT Defense (51.0%)
- #60 Defensive Rebound % (26.4%)

New Mexico State (currently #14 seed on BracketMatrix)
- #76 2PT% (50.1%)
- #258 Tempo (66.7)
- #24 2PT Defense (46.1%)
- #60 Defensive Rebound % (26.4%)

SMU (currently 4th team out on BracketMatrix)
- #72 2PT% (50.2%)
- #128 Tempo (69.2)
- #15 2PT Defense (45.0%)
- #198 Defensive Rebound % (30.8%)

Memphis, obviously, also fits this mold.

On the flip side, a few teams that would be great to see (using these metrics)

- Northern Iowa (#13 BracketMatrix)
- Chattanooga (#13 BracketMatrix)
- South Dakota State (#12 BracketMatrix)
- Miami (#11 BracketMatrix)
- Michigan (#11 BracketMatrix)

I'm glad he's kind of accepting some blame for this. I'm ok with him being blunt and not always doing the "aw shucks I'm the coach and it's my fault" thing, but it was not a great look to always blame the players for the effort stuff.

Hopefully he incorporates this sort of evaluation into his roster building the next few years in terms of recruiting and the portal (my guess is he does). I give him a pass for this year with it still being early in his tenure (in terms of still having a roster with a lot of prior pieces) and the injuries/Primo departure that kind of gutted one of the key areas this team needed (athletic wings who can defend).

This is exactly what I have been thinking. Leaders in team sports are very important. Coaches need to work on developing them every year. Cannot go into a season hoping someone would emerge. Need to identify and then counsel alpha's on the team.

Hypothetical question:

Lose to LSU
Lose in first round of SEC tourney
Make a run in the NCAA tournament to the Elite 8

Do you deem the year a success or no? Curious what y’all think

Absolutely a success. An Elite 8 has only been accomplished once in our entire basketball history.

Elite 8? Absolutely!
I haven’t seen anything lately that makes me think we can string three wins together against good teams though.

I'm not sure I even understand the argument against that being a successful year to be honest.

He isn't wrong, but I also can't blame a relatively inexperienced coach too much for having a blind spot regarding leadership when he has multiple upperclassman starters. Yeah some of it is on Oats, but most of it is on Shack, Quinerly, and Ellis for being unwilling or unable to take ownership of the team. It goes without saying that if you're an upperclassman on a college basketball team part of your role is to hold your teammates accountable.

More so I guess maybe in the sense that it hasn’t been that enjoyable a good bit of the time and to go out with a dud but get hot in the tourney if that’d be worth it or not. 1st round loss or elite 8, won’t be shocked either way.

If it was a Sweet 16 run would the feeling of a success still be there?

I only know of one person who would deem that outcome to the season a failure, and fortunately he hasn't been shitting all over this thread anytime lately. Hopefully because he's banned.

Absolutely. If this team is still alive after the first weekend, especially after how infuriating the regular season has been, I'd consider it a huge success and a ton of positive momentum going forward.
