I mean this is not the type of roster Oats prefers, obviously. His recruiting makes the clear. Davison isn't even his type of guy, and if he played in Metro Chicago there is no way we'd have devoted recruiting resources to him (not that he can't play).

He wants an electric PG who can break teams down and 3 wings who are 6'4 to 6'7 who can defend and shoot, and then a couple bigs who can play different minute shares depending on the other teams roster and style (KAH/Gary and Bediako/Bruner). It's really too bad Kira wasn't a freshman last year because he would have worn teams out last year and this year (like he did once the light came on 10 games into his one Oats season).

Wed never recruit a guy like Shack (who has made himself into a very good college player). And we'd definitely never have 3 guards who are stumpy and short armed. They brought in Burnett thinking he'd be one of those long guys and his knee blew up. They lost Primo who was a long athletic guy. All of a sudden, oh shite this roster is a patchwork unbalanced group of body types .

DraftKings has us as 3 point favorites. Betting on CBB sounds miserable in general so I’d avoid Bama like the plague

Based on the type of guy Oats has been prioritizing in recruiting, I'd like to think this is an outlier year based on our roster. We've been mostly targeting long and athletic players in recruiting. Players like JQ and Shack were good gets at the time, but I don't think we're targeting these types of guys now so I expect it to be much better in the future. Guys like Burnett, Miller, Bradley, and Griffen while Miles and Holt continue to progress gives us much stronger perimeter defenders for next year. We should be a terror in the passing lanes with that group.

+1

Great post.

Yep. It was able to work last year because we had a deep rotation of switchable wings. This year we really don't, and it is forcing a lot more onto the plates of guys who can't handle a wide variety of defensive assignments. It'll be interesting to see if and how Oats backs up his comments from today, because if he really means it I'd imagine Holt is going to play 25+ minutes against Vandy barring foul trouble.

I don't hate Shack at all. I just have an opinion that's all.

JD can break teams down matter of fact he's already shown it. Our team isn't reliable from deep like last year's team was therefore they can CLOG the lane against JD. This roster isn't good to be honest and a couple players aren't progressing like they need to. Next seasons recruiting class is much different with pretty much everybody being somewhat long whether it's height/wingspan and athletic.

I hope he plays Holt 25 plus minutes because he deserves it. He's been bringing effort non stop every single game. I noticed during the Auburn game how he guarded Jabari Smith and I mean he was locked in on not letting him touch the ball shoot at first glance I was like okay then Miles so I hit rewind and it was Jusuan Holt...I knew then what type guy he could be because he wanted the challenge.

Quick question for the board: which game frustrated you more and why, Bama/KY at Coleman or Bama/KY at Rupp? Both were losses but completely different games and reasons for losing. I’ll hold off on giving my opinion (not that it’s worth much).

The game where I was more frustrated about our team would definitely be the home loss. I thought we played pretty decent at Rupp…the frustration in that game was mostly towards the officiating

Oats realizes that defense is going determine this team’s fate. Despite not shooting well for most of the year, our offensive efficiency is still terrific.

I mean think about it. We made 6 of our first 8 threes Saturday. We were hitting everything the first 15 minutes, and we were trailing by halftime and getting blown out by midway through the second half.

Ala leads Vandy series 73-70.
Ala has won 5 of the last 7 and the last 2 @ Vandy.
Before that, 1-16 @ Vandy back to '86.

I was bummed after the home game because I came into town to see a pretty damn boring game. Upon reading the stats (3-30 from 3 right?), I convinced myself that we played pretty well on defense and had horrendous luck shooting

I'm still frustrated with the past Saturday. First off, Kentucky got called for 7 fouls all game. Second, we wasted a great start shooting and erased the strides we made on rebounding and defense. Both those things facilitated the collapse before the half that pretty much killed our chances.

If we win tonight though, I'll be right back on board convinced that we're gonna end the year on a 4 game win streak

Vandy has won 4 straight homes games and played fairly well at Tenn, at Auburn and at UK in that time period. They've averaged over 27 FT attempts per game in those 4 home games and Pippen has averaged @23 ppg over all seven games.

Let's just say I HOPE we play well and pull it out, but...

Vandy has played good basketball since they got their injured guys back a few weeks ago. They have more offensive options than just Pippen now. Per Torvik, since Feb 1, we are #32 nationally and they are #39.

This will be a difficult game.

Considering how often we struggle to defend at all, much less defend without fouling, and the fact that the game is in Memorial Shithole I'd be shocked if we won. Pippen is probably going to score 30+ and flop and flail his way to 8-10 trips to the FT line. If he does his usual act of pretending he just got shot whenever someone bumps him in the paint I fully support Chuck channeling his inner Bill Laimbeer.

Probably Bradley or a transfer, but I'd expect at least one of those 3 to return

Of JD, JQ, and Shack, I would most expect Shack to return. they all likely have good NIL deals, but JQ would be 24 next year, JD high second round - so a good job Herb was picked right about where JD is projected, and he makes over $3 mil a year) but Shack might really improve with another year as did Herb. He needs and wants to improve his point guard skills, and he could do that behind or with Bradley. That being said, we are likely looking for an experienced point guard transfer.
