Hmmmm - this isn’t what Coach Oats said yesterday

Alabama's Darius Miles a game-time decision for matchup with Ole Miss (USA Today)

After serving a suspension on Saturday against Kentucky, it is being reported that Alabama forward Darius Miles will be a game-time decision for Alabama’s Wednesday night contest against the Ole Miss Rebels.

I think Oats was expecting to get Primo back. Because If he knew he wasn’t coming back Oats would have snagged another High-Level Guard in the portal. But by time it became clear Primo wasn’t coming back there was nobody good left.

This team with Primo and Nimari would be top 10 right now IMO

The analytics say 3s and shots at the rim, but for a guy like Rojas or Quinerly I’d wager the analytics say they’re better off taking mid range shots or shots at the rim.

Rojas and Gurley have lower Pt Per Shot on 3s than 2s, and that includes non-layups. And both are over 15 attempts from 3PT range and don't have histories of being good shooters.

So, at this point, analytically them shooting 3s is a net negative. Like Oats said, though, the problem is when they end up being open in a shooting spot, because they shouldn't shoot it and therefore probably shouldn't be flashing to that spot if they aren't going to shoot it. It's a waste of time and spacing, and even then turning down that look fricks up the flow of the possession. Because neither is good at immediately putting it on the floor and going towards the rim, so it just leads to an awkward catch, don't shoot, wait, look and pass.....and every defender has time to switch back and recover.

I agree - I'm fairly positive he thought he'd have Primo and Burnett on the wings this season, which truly changes the dynamic of our team athletically and defensively.

Primo leaves (not mad at him, his rise was pretty unpredictable this specific off-season) and Burnett is out for the year. It's basically the equivalent of losing both your ILB or your top 2 receivers......both situations we know well. There generally aren't a ton of easy internal options to make up for their expected production.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but why the frick did we even sign Gurley out of the portal? Like, Bruner didn't make a huge impact last year but that was mostly because his 60 year old knees gave out. Before he initially got hurt he was doing all the little glue guy things we expected him to. Gurley has been as bad, if not worse, than Bolden was.

Sometimes it just doesn't pan out. I think a lot of us were excited because he did well in the small sample size of competition that he would play against at this level but whether it's chemistry, adapting to a new role, or not buying in it's just a disappointing end result.

I would still be fine with him returning next year but just as quality depth.

With Bediako’s constant foul trouble, I shudder to think how bad we’d be without Gurley. He’s certainly not a center, but he does provide some size down low.

So why didn't we go after a 5 in the portal? I'm not trying to trash Gurley. I just really don't understand what the coaches were seeing as far as how he fits into the roster. He and Rojas are basically the same guy. Obviously we weren't going to have Rojas for the first half of the season, but was that really worth a scholarship?

Beats me. I don’t follow recruiting, but I know in basketball the margin for error on a signee is pretty small. Maybe they expected Bediako to be further along in his development. Maybe they expected Gurley to be a 4 that could step back for a few 3’s a game. Maybe they didn’t expect Primo to leave. Maybe they didn’t expect JQ to regress.

I don’t think Gurley has been horrible, but I didn’t have real high expectations for him.

I mean Gurley was pretty good at Furman. Was like 36% from 3 and he was good whenever they played Power conference teams. He gave us and Auburn fits a couple of years ago

We're straight up going pure hindsight now. Gurley was considered a very good pick-up by a lot of outsiders and was ranked relatively well. People thought he would be a good fit because he's a big that can run the floor and shoot from the perimeter. He wasn't Jordan Bruner level excitement from the year before but Gurley had working knees and a jump shot that was proven against better competition like us and Auburn.

Also at the time let's not forget Rojas was still healthy, Gary was coming off a strong end of the season as our 4/5, Ellis was at the 4 when going real small, Tchikou wasn't in the dog house, and Bediako coming in.

It didn't work out like how we hoped but it's a learning lesson for Oats and the rest of the staff when it comes to evaluating the portal. For whatever reason Gurley just hasn't clicked here. That being said, I don't think he would count against our roster limits next year and would love to have him back for depth.

Also, if anyone wants a good laugh, go look at some of the initial transfer rankings and expectations. Just like recruiting, it isn't an exact science. Expectations for most of these guys should be the same as recruits coming in.

Honestly, for me the biggest disappointment this season has been Ellis. He’s been fine on the defensive end, but I expected more offensively. JQ has had a few really bad games, but overall he’s been okay.

Well yeah I get that it's a hindsight based discussion. I acknowledged as much. My concern is that, so far, our track record with transfers has been a bit spotty in terms of how good of a fit it ends up being. It's never going to be an exact science, but as we can see down in the Lee County Agrodome nailing the portal can take a shite team and immediately turn it into a title contender.

I am disappointed in him in the sense that he has clearly chosen not to take on any sort of leadership role on or off the court. His play has been pretty much the same as it was last year, but with more minutes. He has cost himself a ton of money by not wanting to be anything more than a role player for some strange reason.

Off topic but what’s our nonconference schedule looking like next year? I know we play Gonzaga in BHam and at Houston but who else?

We play South Ala on the road next year, back in Tuscaloosa the year after for the final game of that series.

Weird fact: Oats/Pearl/Musselman are all 28-18 in conference the last 3 seasons.

I think you’re right, we’ll play them. Then like McGregor said, we also play at South Alabama
