Curtis Williams, the No. 52 overall prospect in the 2023 class, cut his list down to six back in May but he has made some changes.

His previous list of Alabama, Florida State, Notre Dame, Tennessee State, Seton Hall, and Xavier is looking a little different now with four schools at the forefront of his mind.

"It's no longer like a top six anymore but more like a top four with Seton Hall, Louisville, Florida State and Providence," he told 247Sports.

NIL becomes legal hamstringing him because all our money is going to football

I joined High Tide Traditions for the minimum $120 a year. That is pretty much a useless donation I know, but I just can't afford big donations. I know nobody can specify a particular player to receive a donation because it is for all players having a set base salary, but I was hoping to designate my pitance for basketball. Apparently with High Tide, all the money just goes into one fund, and as Robot Santa says above, it is not pay for play up front. I do understand that football is top priority and will receive most of the money, but I would up my donation a little if I could desgnate basketball. However, I doubt that would get us Freddie Dilione.

So two of our top guys gone like that??

Not concerned but that does suck

Im gonna still hold out hope for Dilone because everything he said about was just too good for him to be basing his decision off of NIL, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the biggest bidder was to win again for a recruit

I thought about donating to HTT but I opted to continue donating to the Crimson Standard so I can earmark it for basketball and get tide pride points. It was a selfish move on my part but I wanted some benefit if I’m giving money away just for the sake of it. Like you, it isn’t like my donations are moving the needle one way or the other though.

I could be wrong, but it seems like our coaches followed him a ton last year but then didn’t really follow him at the most recent events.

I honestly can't get a feel for what is going on with our recruiting this year. They just seem to be all over the place and can't seem to gain any traction with the top guys. But we're definitely going to have at least 5 scholarships to fill (the currently open one, JQ, Gurley, Welch, and Miller) with the possibility of more becoming available via draft declarations or transfers. I really don't like the idea of relying on the portal that much.

SEC programs getting heavily involved with fast-rising '24 Derrion Reid

Derrion Reid is one of the more interesting 2024 basketball prospects in the southeast. In July, the 6-foot-7 guard became a hot topic playing with The Skills Factory 16u program on Nike’s EYBL Circuit.

“I’m a bigger guard,” Reid told On3. “I would say I play more smooth, looking to pass first. At 6-foot-7, I can play the one through three, one through four, whatever it takes for my team to get the win. I watch a lot of Lebron James, how he’s a playmaker; he’s my favorite player. Jayson Tatum, I love how he gets to his spots.”

College coaches took notice as the rising Grovetown (GA) High junior has doubled his scholarship total since June. On3 caught up with Derrion Reid to talk about which schools

“I’m hearing from Tennessee a lot, Alabama and Auburn,” Reid said. “I go to Mississippi State next weekend. I’ve already visited Auburn and Alabama unofficially.”

Reid talks recruitment

Mississippi State: “My Auntie went there, Natasha Reid. She was a fan favorite and wanted to visit there with me. I have a good connection with the coaches. They watched a lot of my games at Peach Jam.”

Alabama: “I was able to see the living spaces for the team. I didn’t know they had tutors every day and tutors for every class. My mom is a teacher, and she really liked that. I know a couple of their players and how the coaching staff tracks each player’s health during practice. They keep up with their players and treat them great.”

Auburn: “I know Zep Jasper from my area; he put in a good word for me. I learned a lot about their culture; we sat down with the coaches. Their intensity is through the roof, and they like players who can keep their intensity on both sides of the ball.”

Tennessee: “They see that I’m a big guard. They like a versatile guy like me, with my play-making and my vision who can play multiple spots like that.”

“After Peach Jam, I heard from Kentucky and Memphis,” Reid said. “They’re telling me they like my game, how I can handle the ball at my size and to keep going.”

Reid’s take

“I’m going to look best at where I can fit in,” Reid said. “I’ll look at the program’s culture, fan base, and relationship with the coaching staff. I am building a relationship with the coaching staff more and more every day.

“I’m going to look at their plan for me, how they will use me. I like to be used as a big guard, play for a coach that lets me make the right plays and decisions.”

On3’s take

Derrion Reid has a great frame with good length. The thing that pops off the page when watching Reid is his court vision. In the 6-6/6-7 range, his ability to find the open man in the half-court or full-court setting is a weapon. He is a good athlete with a great frame. There is a lot of upside on the defensive end, in the passing lanes. Reid will need to re-tool the jump shot; while he makes it at times, the trajectory can get a bit flat, causing inconsistencies. He is a good rebounder and can knock down a mid-range pull-up. There are a lot of tools here as Reid is tracking as a national-level recruit.

Yeah but NIL was a thing last year and we signed a fantastic class while being heavily involved for a ton of other top recruits.

This last class was signed coming off a huge year, which likely played a big part with that one. Now we don't have near as much buzz, and the NIL thing looks like it is becoming more of a problem. The NIL money is probably more spread out amongst the team now than it has been the last 2 years. I'd imagine we have a certain type of salary cap for our program and even then, if Saban really wants someone and they're over their budget, it is going to come out of our budget.

I'd say that they need to change it to where you can earmark it, but honestly that might be worse for us. I'd be willing to bet that if they allowed earmarkings for NIL contributions 95+% of the earmarks would be for football.

If we lose out on Dilione, that's going to be a very bad sign. After his visit, the dude seemed like he was a silent commit. It would be abundantly clear that we were significantly outbidded. For that to happen for a five-star to a blue blood is very understandable. For that to happen with the 87th ranked player off of one of the most glowing post-visit reviews I've ever seen to Tennessee is incredibly pathetic.

I’ve heard that High Tide Traditions will be revealing sometime soon a new plan where you can designate your money towards a specific sport. I won’t donate anything until that is put in place.

I agree that the overwhelming majority of the earmarks would be for football, but I don't think that would equate to 95% of the contributed dollars going to football. We have a fair amount of big money basketball boosters, and when we have a pulse Coleman tends to be packed. So basketball would get a not insignificant amount of money I think. Football would obviously benefit greatly from massive amounts of small donations from FOGs though.

It won't be a BAD sign and I guarantee Coach Oats won't lose any sleep but Freddie hasn't committed to Tennessee yet but if he does...

TRANSFER PORTAL

Recruiting is different now so we must adjust and we have already.

While I'm not hitting the panic button if UT does get him, losing out on a high priority target that RAVED about us and seemed seconds away from committing to pulling a 180 a couple weeks later is a tad concerning.

Also, if NIL is a problem in recruiting high-school kids, it will continue to be an issue in the transfer portal as well.
