7 Things We Learned from Alabama Basketball's European Tour (SI)

The new-look Crimson Tide went 3-0 on its trip to Barcelona and Paris, including a win over a very stout opponent.

Alabama was mediocre, to put it simply, on the defensive end last season, barely ranking in the top 100 in efficiency according to the analytics service KenPom.

From both a personnel and an early-results standpoint, this season the defense has the potential to return to the top-5 form it had in 2021.

quote:

Miller and Burnett have immense versatility defensively with their long builds, size, and quick hands. Sears can be an incredibly pesky defender for opposing point guards, and freshman point guard Jaden Bradley was one of the best defenders at the guard position in the entire 2022 high school class.

Coupling them with the return of Bediako's rim protection, Clowney's versatility, and Miles' and Gurley's returning experience, and on paper Alabama should have a stout defense.

The results from the tour support this as well, specifically against China. During the win, Alabama shot a mere 18 percent from beyond the arc, a stark contrast to the previous two games (41 and 43 percent). Despite the drop off in shooting, Alabama was still able to hold on for a double-digit win due to its ability to create turnovers and make stops.

This is probably the most exciting thing I saw outside of Brandon Miller showing out. Grinding out a comfortable, double digit win against a good team despite a poor shooting night gives me a lot of hope for this team.

My expectations are uncomfortably high now based on three exhibitions I also feel marginally better about Oats not using the last scholarship. Before the tour, I wasn’t sure I believed his comments, i.e. “we don’t need another guy that won’t see the court”. I’m still not saying I entirely agree with his approach, but I do completely believe he felt that way and meant it now.

Does anyone know if any of the advanced metric guys release another update before the season? Torvik, for example, doesn’t even have Miles or Clowney listed as “expected contributors”. It doesn’t really matter, as it’s still a bit of a guess, but I would expect them to have a better idea of performance/abilities after all of these foereign tours are finished.

"We've got some guys that are pretty talented. We've got some guys that are going to be great role players, and they seem pretty happy in their roles right now," Oats said in a postgame interview with walk-on Adam Cottrell. "I like where we're at now. I like our culture now, I like our camaraderie, our chemistry."

Also, something we didn’t hear at any point during last season. Quite the opposite, actually. It would be nice to have this kind of stuff worked out before the season starts rather than harping on it in week 6.

If we don’t have one of the worst shooting nights in Alabama basketball history

I think we actually did have a historic bad shooting night last year. It was single digits for awhile. Cal has plenty to worry about with Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, and Arkansas genuine threats to beat his Cats wherever they play.

Oscar is good but he struggles against length and athleticism.

He struggled versus Bediako if I'm not mistaken.

Box him out and you will neutralize him! (That's a tall task though)

The problem is no one can box him out. He’s a pure animal.

It'll be mine as well bro! I'm in that boat right with you.

Hopefully our offensive firepower and improved defense gets us to a 20 plus win season again.

Bamafan you gotta get in the right frame of mind. If you expect the worst then when shite goes off the rails you will be expecting it and not as devastated. And then Anything good that happens will make you extremely happy/ pleasantly surprised

I’ve got a lot of experience with Bama Basketball

Only after we reach our traditional 17-9 record in mid February of course.

Doesn’t sound like we are gonna get Freddie Dilone. Guy on Rivals said Tennessee has taken the lead because of NIL.

Of course we finally get a great recruiter as a HC and fricking NIL becomes legal hamstringing him because all our money is going to football

This would be the 2nd recruit who we either led for or had silently committed that we missed out on because another program is willing to pay more. The first one I can't remember the name, think he ended up committing to Baylor. I would hate to lose Oats to a basketball school because we are not willing to be good in more than one sport

I mean, it isn't going to football either. Not in the sense you are implying at least. We are losing recruits there because of NIL as well because we aren't offering it to them in exchange for signing. We just aren't playing the same game that Aggy, Tennessee, Texas, Miami, etc. are with it.
