Curtis Williams Jr., 2023 four-star, discusses recruitment, visits

Curtis Williams Jr., a 6-foot-6 small forward out of Bloomfield Hills (Mich.) Brother Rice holds early offers from Alabama, Maryland, Tennessee State, among others.

Williams is the No. 51 prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is ranked as the No. 9 small forward and the No. 1 player in Michigan.

However, the Michigan native has started to pick up interest from Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Florida State, Xavier, and Marquette.

Williams has taken unofficial visits to Tennessee State, Michigan State, and Notre Dame. He plans on taking his first official visit to Alabama on Feb. 5. He would also like to take official visits to Florida State, Marquette, and Tennessee State.

Tennessee State

“It was great,” Williams said. “The environment was great, the culture. It was different, but it was fun though.”

Michigan State

Williams has been to Michigan State twice, both unofficially. Once in October, and once in June.

“The energy was great,” Williams said. “They had a lot of energy and focus a lot on defense. They have a lot of great players there, like Max Christie and Jaden Akins. They’re going to develop there a lot. But it was great. I got to see what they ran through and how an everyday practice is like for them. I got to talk to Magic Johnson and that was really cool too.”

Michigan

“I feel the same about them as I do Michigan State,” Williams said. “They’re both great schools. It’s a winning program. Juwan (Howard), when he got there, he made big changes for sure. They’re getting more recruits each year and he’s a cool dude to talk to, like even outside of basketball.”

Notre Dame

‘They have a great culture,” Williams said. “And their facilities, they just got them redone like two years ago, and they are really nice. They have some great facilities there.”

North Carolina

Curtis Williams Jr. recently popped up on North Carolina’s radar.

“I’ve been talking to North Carolina so when I start talking to them a lot more, I’ll definitely take an official there,” Williams said.

Williams also mentioned that UNC was his ‘dream school’ growing up.

What is Williams looking for in a school?

“Really the culture,” Williams said. “Like the coaches, how they get along… if I can see myself playing with the players and how close can I be with them, outside of basketball.”

Who does Williams hear from the most frequently?

“Alabama, for sure. Tennessee State, Xavier. Those are the three that contact me every day.”

23 points and seven rebounds last night for Alabama signee Rylan Griffen.

I’ve been bought in on the Lone Star State’s elite level guard. He bolstered his season totals to 22.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and nearly two steals a game.

Will do wonders under Nate Oats next year.

Definitely looks like Rylan is going to be a special player for us. His consistency in scoring and rebounding speaks to his talent. Oats may have unearthed another gem. Oats and Bryan’s eye for talent is very Sabanesque.

Watching Pringle highlights that he posts on Twitter…I don’t think his athleticism will be questioned. His hands look solid and all we need are bigs that can actually role to the basket, catch, and finish.

Offensively.

Defensively, they better be able to hold the fort down. We need a rebounder, who's a threat to block layups without hacking. Someone quick enough laterally that he can make the switch, if needed. We play mostly man, with a lot of rotation help.

Bediako seems to fit that mold. He just needs to play smarter, and avoid letting other teams get him into foul trouble. But that comes with experience. And it's why I'm glad we're playing the schedule we are. It'll only help him come along quicker. And he almost certainly has another year before the looks towards the draft.

Do we go after another inside player to help our rebounding struggles?

I highly doubt it for the 22 class since we already have Clowney and Pringle locked in. Both are 6’9” 200+ lbs and both should play at that 4/5 big man position for us. We also have Miller in the class who is 6’8” 200+ lbs and we probably play a ton of minutes as a 3/4.

If the right candidate is in the transfer portal, we would probably make something work to add a piece there if we can or need to.

I’m sure we will add some big body 4/5 types in the 23 class - we are actively recruiting a few.

My hope is also that Bediako and Tchikou both return and play almost all of our 5 minutes next year. We will still have KAH around as far as we know right now (could change imo) and the hope with him at that point is that he will make a decent leap as a Junior and be able to play a role, but to this point his progression has been a bit disappointing.

The thing about both him and Tchikou is that we haven't really been able to see their progression because they have played such limited minutes.

That has been the downside to playing the toughest nonconference schedule in the country.

I'm not one of those that will pretend to know better than Oats and the staff what those 2 can offer, but we have seen so disappointingly little of them that they are still mystery boxes to the majority of fans.

In 10 games, KAH has played 42 minutes and Tchikou has played 5 minutes.

Well to this point Gurley has been underwhelming. How bad must Tchikou be?

If we don't get some rebounding and boxing out on the O board, we won't go very far.

We miss the threat of Pettey on the outside. Right now all they have to worry about from out there are JQ and Shack. Ellis has yet to prove he can hurt them from there. The other defenders are just moving to the middle and clogging it up taking away drives.

JQ is shooting 26% on 6 attempts, Ellis is shooting 35% on 5 attempts

I think there’s a chance we may end up having 3 McDonalds All-Americans and possibly 5*s in this class by the end of the year. Rylan Griffen is playing on another level this year for his HS team Richardson, which also has Cason Wallace on it. If Cason Wallace is the 6th best prospect in the nation, I see no way that Rylan Griffen isn’t top 30 this year.

I was really excited about this guys long-term potential when it started to look like we were probably going to get him, but I had no idea he’d start to realize it this soon. He’s the perfect kind of guard for our offense. He’s probably one of the top 3 overall point scorers and shooters in all of HS basketball this year and I mean that seriously. He’s going to shoot up the rankings when the outlets update their rankings soon.

If you haven’t had the chance to yet, go watch some of his highlights on his twitter page here. You can thank me later.

Five-star London Johnson focusing on six as decision nears

London Johnson used the past year to establish himself as one of the top point guards in the 2023 class with scholarship offers coming in from all over the country.

Earlier this month, Johnson decided to take his shot at the international game as he used his dual citizenship with Jamaica to play in the 2021 FIBA U17 Centrobasket Championship. In six games, the five-star prospect averaged 36 points per game and helped Jamaica finish 6th overall.

With that behind him, Johnson is now nearing a college decision. He’s hoping to announce his school for the next level within the next month or so. He cut his list to 12 schools last month, but says he’s now focused on Georgia, Virginia, NC State, Clemson, USC and Alabama as his commitment nears.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Alabama: “They have a point guard coming in next year, Jaden Bradley, who might go one and done. I know they play fast and a lot of transition.”

Clemson: “I have a good connection with the coaches. They have a lot of graduating guards coming up. They signed some big men, so now they need some guards.”

Georgia: “I like coach [Tom] Crean and coach [Steve] McClain. I think if I go there, it would be like staying home. When I went on a visit, coach Crean compared my style of play to what they do on film.”

NC State: “I like coach [Kevin] Keatts and coach [Roy] Roberson. I have a good connection with them as well. I feel like they are pretty loaded at guard right now.”

USC: “I like coach [Eric] Mobley. When I went on a visit there, we had a great connection. I feel like the program is a good basketball program. I watched practice and I could see how I fit in there.”

Virginia: “I like coach [Tony] Bennett and coach [Jason] Williford. We have a great connection, and I could see myself fitting in there. On film, they showed me how I could fit into what they do.”

*****

RIVALS’ REACTION

Johnson said a decision could come as soon as right around the turn of the year. He hasn’t set a date or time yet. As he approaches his commitment, he’s not tipping his hand in any way about which school could win out for his services.

There has been speculation about Johnson potentially moving up into the 2022 class or considering professional options, but he sounded pretty firm on his plan to stay right where is. The school that wins out in his recruitment will be landing an elite scorer and playmaker with great size for a lead guard. He also has the potential to be an elite on-ball defender with his length and quickness.
