And if we had been playing Gonzaga, UCONN or UCLA we would’ve lost by 20.
In a single elimination tournament you can’t afford a total meltdown in all phases which is what happened tonight.
Everyone of those guys will graduate or move on knowing the opportunity that was squandered and none of them are going to feel good about the way the team executed.

Can’t lie, this thread now hurts to actively read and post knowing the seasons over
Any shot we could in the near future get the offseason thread going Chad? Or whoever wants to start it

Which is why March Madness is fun and exciting but absolutely the worst way to crown the best team in the country. Anybody think we wouldn't win a 5 or even 3 game series against San Diego St.? Not me.
Just look at our performances coming off a loss this year. I'd take us against any team in the country in a best-of series. But single elimination allows for way more upsets.

Im in the hottub with a bicycle helmet on and there’s tornado warnings. This is what happens when we lose.

Haven’t been on here in a while and figured I’d share my thoughts on the season and tonight.
1. Best Bama basketball team in my lifetime. Enjoyed the ride.
2. The better team won tonight. They were better prepared, controlled the game, got to more loose balls, etc. Highly disappointing to see how unprepared we looked from the start.
3. This team’s mental fortitude was impacted by the Miles incident. I even question if Miller was actually injured and wasn’t actually struggling mentally from all the stress. That’s a LOT on an 18 year old. At this point though it doesn’t matter.
4. Watched the game with a. Friend that refs high school games. He made an interesting comment on ref bias. Not bias towards one team or another, but towards their style of play. SDSU came into the game with a reputation for physical defense. His point was refs subconsciously give those teams the benefit of the doubt when it comes to foul calls. He was clear that he wasn’t blaming the loss on the refs, but mentioned that had it been called tighter early on, it might have been a different game. He thought the turning point of the game was when Sears got raked across the face on a rebound and no foul was called. I mostly thought the game was called fairly evenly.
5. Our guard play has been a strength all season, but has been spotty the past month or so. JQ has had some huge games, but he struggled tonight. Pretty sure over half of their blocks were on him. Sears had a decent game, but struggled again from beyond the arc. You have to have good guard play to win the NCAA tournament.
6. Gonna harp again on just how unprepared this team looked tonight. Maybe the stage was just too big for a young team. It didn’t look like a team that used the week tk scout their opponent. Our early 2nd half run was all athleticism and talent. SDSU took Oats and our staff to school on their counter run that sealed the game. That’s two Sweet 16 appearances for Oats where he’s been outclassed by the opposing coaching staff. UCLA was a hot team in 2021 so I’ll give him a pass there, but tonight was inexcusable. SDSU is a solid team but they should not have exerted their will on us like they did, and that’s on the coaches.
Fun season though. Hopefully we can regroup and get back here next year.

You’re right on most of your post, and everybody is right in most stuff in here, but I just can’t shake getting that 9 point lead with like 11:30 left and just wilting. We weren’t playing well when we got that lead. We weren’t shooting well. The refs were letting SDSU be physical. Yet we were so good defensively and being aggressive after rebounds and loose balls that it didn’t matter. And then suddenly we weren’t. We should’ve been able to ride that 9 point lead against a bad offensive team with our elite defense, but our defense was awful the rest of the way and that’s hard to handle. 32 points allowed in the last 1130.

3/27 on mostly wide open 3s is not having someone else’s will imposed on you. They fouled us on every rebound, can’t do anything about the refs not calling it.
Your post had some good points, but he didn’t get out coached the whole game. The opening play showed we were prepared and well coached. Things changed in the first half with Brandon and Clowney in foul trouble on poor officiating. When have you ever seen a team that is intentionally being physical called for less fouls than a team that plays pure basketball? You don’t. You might see the physical team win even with 2x the fouls called, but not get less fouls called due to bias.
We also came out strong in the 2nd half and built a 9 point lead. Please tell me how that showed our bad halftime adjustments and bad coaching? Oats made a couple minor mistakes on TOs and letting us foul with over 40 seconds down 2. The team wasn’t unprepared…that’s a an uninformed take by someone who doesn’t understand the game.

Well that wasn’t minor (I would love a thread of us actual basketball fans to discuss the decision to foul, it was fascinating to me). Would’ve loved to see us play it out without fouling but that’s very easy to say with hindsight. Fouling there I presume was all part of the analytical stuff he relies on so heavily to get us to where he’s gotten us, so I can’t hate it too much. One missed FT or a quick layup by us on the other end and it’s probably something in our favor.

Honestly don’t think he was telling them to foul. He didn’t call TO to set the defense and they were still in foul mode. Don’t think that was a coach decision from what I could tell from my seat. Think Oats wanted our guys to trap, but no one came to help
Posted on 3/24/23 at 11:48 pm to BamaBravesPackers
I could see that too. Especially not their best offensive player immediately without at least trying for a steal for a few seconds. Everybody just made it seem like they meant to foul. I hated it, especially who we fouled, but I don’t get paid the big bucks for that stuff

I agree , I thought Oats got out coached and was afraid that would happen if we got deep in the tourney. We also had an off night shooting and the Refs let them just mug us the whole game. I hope this isn't the last time we have this much talent and depth on a team. Still love the guys for playing hard....ROLL TIDE !!

Was our 2004 8 seeded team, the only one of 10,
to win a Sweet 16 game, the lowest seeded team of Bamas that has ever even played in a sweet 16 game?

Two things that we can guarantee will happen each March: tornadoes and Alabama Basketball disappointing us.

I haven't watched the press conference, but if you looked at his face after Griffen fouled it certainly did not suggest that he was happy about it. Bambi lost his footing and propped himself up on the dude.
The color guy proceeded to say Oats wanted it and that he was playing the percentage game, but I don't think the percentages will ever tell you to foul down 2 with 45 seconds to go. Pretty clearly was a mistake by Griffen.

Woke up this morning and still can’t believe we lost that game. Unreal.

This is the best way to crown the champion for college basketball. The only reason some want to question it is because the last few years, with the portal and transfers, the parity is greater than ever. Thus, you have more upsets. Before all this portal garbage, your best teams were usually winning it all. That may not happen as much now. Still the best tournament I can think of.
As for series like the shite nba, no. As I said a couple times in this thread, that shite league is all ready bleeding in to college basketball with how physical they are letting teams get, players travel all the time, and there are illegal screens everywhere, especially at the top.
The refs weren't really that bad imo, except for 3 or 4 calls/no calls. We were lucky they called a foul on Sears in the firat half and not Miller's 3rd foul. Miller shoved him. But they let SdSt do what they do and we didn't fight through it. We haven't really played great for the last 2 months and I think the Miles and then the Miller news just had a long, slow death on this team. It became too much.
Bottom line, we got beat. They played better D, and shot the ball better overall, but especially during their run. Bama had a chance to put it away up 9, lost the mo with that 3 and a horrific to from Miller. Bama shooting was bad, ill advised shots, really bad tos, and not being strong at the rim. All recipes for an L in this tournament at this spot.
It was a great season! Proud of them! SEC season and tournament Champs, #1 in the nation, #1 overall seed! It's disappointing it ended without more, but damn, these kids, Oats and staff, should be hailed and uplifted! Great ride!

I'm more pissed and disgusted than I am surprised. Even after sleeping on it I have absolutely nothing positive to say about anything or anyone associated with this joke of a program. Oats has taken it to its ceiling. He's going to leave in a couple of years and we will probably hire another Grant or Avery. Downvote me, tell me I'm stupid, I don't care. This is what Alabama basketball is and it will never change.
