Bama BBall just posted this highlight of Sam Walters against TCU. They seem to know we have a good one.

That is one sweet lefty stroke

He has been hitting the deer antler spray. Looks like he's packed on some good weight and he finished strong through a lot of contact multiple times.

I like the schedule. Tough one. Some great OOC matchups as usual under Oats. Hopefully we can attack Purdue’s big man and get him into foul trouble. At Creighton and Arizona in Phoenix will be very difficult.

We have to play at Rupp this year. Tennessee twice and Florida twice.

Bama/Arkansas rivalry has been elevated greatly with Oats and Muss but only get them once this year and it’s in Coleman. Last game of the reg season too.

I’m sure we’ll hear about that from Razorback fans. Their only shot at revenge in the reg season is on the road and it should be Bama’s senior day. Tough ask to win that game if you’re Arky.

One of those Bama basketball accounts posted a video of The end of the ND game Avery’s first year and it reminded me how after we won in Gainesville and Baton Rouge during Avery’s 1st year he had us all fooled

Morehead State standout guard Mark Freeman, the OVC Preseason Player of the Year, is likely out for the season, coach Preston Spradlin told @TheMessenger.

Had wrist surgery. Averaged 15 points and nearly four assists per game last season and helped lead Morehead to a 22-12 record and 14-4 in league play

Just needed a preppy looking black guy named Reginald or Theodore or something the III at PG and we could have been the SEC's Duke.

Booking my flight now for a trip to a random city for another soul sucking Sweet 16 loss!

The only time in school history where we made 3 Sweet 16s in 4 years was 1985-87, but the 87 team had to vacate. If Oats takes this team to Sweet 16 or beyond, this would arguably be the best 4 years of Alabama basketball history. Sign me up!

(For getting to S16, not soul sucking loss…surely we’ll break through eventually)

I’m ready! Of course we’d love something better than a flame out in the big tourney but Oats has made basketball fun again. Let the threes fly baby!

I was so happy when my team picked him up. Very surprised he got one of the 3 two-way contracts

Some things that stood out to me from looking at the box score that i'm not sure have been mentioned:

~Jarin Stevenson played the third most minutes - behind Nelson and Estrada. He was also super efficient going 2-3 (1-2) and 5-6 from the FT line. Feels like there is a nonzero chance that he and Nelson start at the 4/5 eventually (maybe right away?) with Pringle coming off the bench.

~Nelson had four fouls in 36 minutes, Stevenson had four fouls in 31 minutes, and Pringle had three fouls in 21 minutes. We should be able to live with that since they likely won't be playing that many minutes every night in the regular season. Brandon led the team last year with 32 minutes per game and Sears was second at just under 30.

~ Nelson drew seven fouls and went 7-8 on FT. That's going to be nice all season long.

~ 23-29 as a team on FT. That's 79.3% - we shot 72.5% last year.

~We shot 32% from 3P, but only two guys made one. Would have been a lot worse if Walters wasn't en fuego. Flip side to that is Nelson, Griffen, Estrada and Wrightsell aren't going to combine for 0-10 very often.

~ We won a close rebounding battle 35-33. TCU actually had two more defensive rebounds than we did, but we had eight offensive rebounds to their four. Looks like the majority of their minutes we played by guys that go 6'2", 6'3", 6'7", 6'7", 6'8", 6'9" and 6'11".

~ 12 assists vs 12 turnovers. Stevenson and Wrightsell combined for 0 TO in over 57 minutes played.

Estrada
Griffen
Walters
Stevenson
Nelson

If they all defend reasonably well that would be a matchup nightmare for so many teams. You can't really defend that kind of size/skill combo all over the floor like that.

Based on Nate's comments, it wouldn't surprise me if all three are on the floor at the same time a good bit this season. I like the idea of Nelson starting at the 5, but, based on what we apparently pitched him, I would assume it's not where he will spend the majority of his time.

Bama Basketball X's and O's-What Exactly Does Nate Oats System Do

Quick refresher to start the season on what exactly Oat's offensive system is and what it isn't. Maybe it'll help prevent comments complaining all our offense is jacking up 3's.
