Downs let there be a bidding war. If people knew what went on behind the scenes.

Welp, I honestly don’t know what to think. Hard to imagine how we won’t be a 3-4 loss (maybe more) team next year. Hopefully Coach DeBoer can start making some waves on the recruiting trail soon.

This is why I was very concerned in hiring DeBoer because this didn't need to be a rebuild but now it's headed that way. We'll see how good he really is.
Even if we hired a young, energetic guy like Lanning, Kiffen or Sark we still might have these departures so maybe it doesn't matter. Seems like NIL is all that matters right now.
It is what it is. We have to be all in on CKD and hope he's the coach we think he is.

I think this happens regardless.

Boom. This.
I don't place the blame on CKD. I think he will be a great coach for us... and from what we've seen, he is trying to build a very strong staff around him. This was going to happen regardless. We weather the storm, and rebuild into the post-Saban era.

CKD fits that mold to me

Before the portal players would not have been allowed to transfer out like they can now. So the real question do we want to have players that do not want to be here and play for Deboer or go ahead and get the ball rolling and let him build the roster that works for him with players that want to play for him?

That roster will be far less talented and would not survive the SEC this year.

A 4th OL from Washington entered the portal, OG Geiren Hatchett. His younger brother, C Landen Hatchett, may also enter. The elder Hatchett split time at RG due to injuries.
He joins LG Nate Kalepo, C Parker Brailsford, and RG Julius Buelow in the portal.
I don't think Buelow is gonna be interested in Bama, as he referred to DeBoer as a "snake" when he left for Bama.

Greg Byrne says Nick Saban’s official role in the program is as an advisor.
He confirms that he does now have an office in Bryant-Denny.
He also confirms that Nick has been talking to recruits and current players throughout this process, and that DeBoer is fully embracing this.

Wish that would help with the gutting of the roster and losing our best defensive player

I wouldn't be surprised if Saban told Downs that his best opportunity for development lies elsewhere. I wouldn't expect him to lie to Downs. I don't fault him for it. He has to give transparent and truthful advice. This is how Saban has always interacted with players, and I don't expect it to change. It may suck for us short term, but it is what it is...

That definitely wouldn't happen. Nick wants Alabama to succeed and he wants the players he recruited here to stay here.

I wish he would have told him that his best chance for development is in this brand new free E-Class from Dream Motors
.

Nick absolutely wants UA to succeed, but not a the expense of a player's best potential for development... if you don't understand that about Saban, then you are blind.
If he thought Downs' best opportunity for success was UA, he absolutely would recommend staying. If he thought Downs' would reach his full potential somewhere else, Saban would not lie to him and would give his the curtesy of the truth. It's not different than Saban being honest with players about playing time. Downvote all you want, but Saban is a transparent person who looks out for his player's best interests.

Unless we have a DB Coach Saban couldn't answer that question. No one has better resources than Bama, the rest is up to coaching.

So you don't think Saban and Downs had a discussion about the new DB coach last night... before Downs decided to enter the portal?
