It was never one thing that lead to the 2019 team being a mess with penalties. Injuries, depth issues, youth, and inexperience were chief. But coaching changes could possibly be an issue too.

It’s definitely something that can be fixed. And I think it starts with the kind of kids you bring in. Not that we have bad kids, we just couldn’t afford to sit those that didn’t play to a standard.

I know one thing, it will be one of the more interesting offseasons and spring camps we’ve seen in a while.

I don't think it's something the coaches can fix on their own. They need to recruit guys who have that alpha dog mentality. We haven't had one of those in a while now on defense. Our defensive players don't play angry anymore. Not enough of our offensive players play angry anymore, but at least a few of them do. In the immortal words of Ray "I Didn't See shite" Lewis, we need some guys who are pissed off for greatness. Discipline comes from within. Discipline is 100% mental. If you want it, you can get it. If you don't want it, no one is going to be able to give it to you.

Discipline is taught. Ask Uncle Sam, ask coach Bryant, ask George Patten? so I have no idea what all this inner perspective stuff you speak about means. Lack of disciple goes right along with poor tackling skills, misalignments, The entire team FIRST concept.

Everything comes down to coaching. Pick a sport, any sport, any level. Coaching is the difference-maker.

Tell you something else, Jeremy Pruitt has finally instilled in those Butch Jone's refugees the concept of discipline, hard nose, physical, fundamental football. It just took a season and a half to undo all the crappy coaching and lousy muscle memory that had been instilled in those hardheads. After this season, the only football players on that team will be fanatics that see football just like their head coach.

As someone else said, you can drill into someone how they are supposed to do their job all day every day for months, but if the guy doesn't give a shite about his job he isn't going to do it right. You can't make someone care. He has to want to care.

As an individual my friend. NOT as a group. Coaching solves the group mentality of how you are going to do business. That's why guys are benched, cut or otherwise dismissed for a failure to get it and do it the right way.

Get sense of entitlement out of the Recruiting site labeled 4*/5*s.

These 4 and 5s have been streaming into the Capstone since 2008. So, what's the point?

We have one of the youngest teams in college football and the youngest roster in the SEC.

Generally speaking, young=dumb. And dumb in this context is a team that is mentally not able to handle the pressure. A little more experience and some older team leadership will help. Years of older players leaving has taken its toll and this year is the result.

I imagine the next couple of years will be a little better because so many of the players will have some experience behind them. Also, hopefully a detail oriented DC can come in and straighten things out and let Saban be the CEO that he is.

Well they keep saying that Tua changed Saban.

Tua changed the dynamics of our program. Defense took a back seat.

IMO, I think the transfer portal ruined discipline

Naw... doesn't seem to be hurting other programs...

Does Saban even address this publicly? Not that he has to.

He's no fool. Only a fool would air their dirty laundry in public. Fans who believe that he should/will don't have a clue about how to run a football team, business, or any other competitive enterprise.

If this was true, all teams would be affected equally - not just Alabama.

I agree with this post, and to add to it, I think it must be understood that many players, even older ones like Diggs - when they make certain mistakes, it's because they're trying to do too much. They're pressing because the team needs a play.

Using this year as an example, I think if our depth/experience on the defensive front 7 had been better, you wouldn't have seen Diggs going for a strip inside the 10 a few games back. He'd have simply made the tackle, as going out of his way to save the day wouldn't have been necessary. Same goes for jumping off-sides. Many times these players have felt the pressure not to "do your job", but to do more than that - which is because other units have not carried their usual weight.

I'm fully confident that if we make whatever staff adjustments need to be made, keep recruiting and developing well, and get back to being experienced and deep on defense, we'll be right back where we need to be. A rising tide raises all ships, as they say.

Didn't I hear that our number of scholarship seniors is in the single digits this year? That kind of stuff plays a big role regarding discipline, culture, etc.

Best advice I ever had before i started my first year teaching 11-12 yr olds was not to let them see you smile until Christmas. Otherwise they’ll think you’re a pushover. I want mean Nick back.
