I think you look at things through crimson colored glasses. I don't mean that in Alabama can do no wrong, but that other teams can do no right. If one of our recievers gets open and scores ut was a great call by Sark, not a bad play by the defense. Opposite here is that no one is giving Kiffen any respect. He is all elite play caller especially when it comes to fooling a defense, so i don't think we should kill Golding because a sophomore bit on a fake. I don't think anyone really thought Golding was going to it scheme Kiffen and it would come down to the athletes making plays to offset the scheme. We missed tackles and had poor communication.

I think Lane is by far the best playcaller and most gifted offensive mind in college football. He's not perfect though. If someone is worthy of a coordinator position at a top 5 program in college football I expect him to be skilled enough to get one over on even the best of the best a few times.

Did you watch last year’s games and all 3 so far this year?

Last year was a situation any coach would have struggled with, so I toss that out.

I thought the defense played really well in the 1st half of the Mizzou game. They lost a little in the 2nd half, maybe because they were rotating more guys in? I thought the defense was pretty solid in the A&M game as well. Yes, there were a few assignments missed, one leading to a long TD. But overall, I'd give the defense a B- in the A&M game.

Saturday was flat bad, no way around it.

The back seven has what? 6 guys who are sophomores or younger? Maybe one's a RS Soph, but you're still talking more than half the back seven is fresh.

It's very easy to see the defense collapse based on how our defense operates. The past few years have always had multiple reads at various levels (Line, LB, DB). COVID kind of screwed us here. The LB's were screwed this game regardless because the line couldn't plug gaps and the field quality made it a pain to change direction after committing to the run.

Not to mention the level of hurry-up Lane ran. They had maybe 2 seconds at best to make calls in the redzone. At one point Lane ran three straight run plays, the exact same play, and we couldn't adjust our assignments. I think Moses followed the WR/RB who was running to the right each play, so it was clear they weren't able to change responsibilities.

In other Bama football news & notes, defensive players of the week for the OM game were Christopher Allen/Patrick Surtain II. Honorable mention went to the OM center for the bad snap, resulting in a late FG over another easy TD.

Dude, when will the excuses STOP?
We’ve been making excuses for Golding for 3 seasons now. We recruit better than anyone.

Meanwhile Clemson, OSU, and Georgia have a strong defense every year.
We had a strong defense every year pre-Golding

Explain that

Moses, Allen, Jobe, Wright, and Surtain are all 3rd or 4th year players. Harris started all season last year. Battle played a ton of snaps last year. Moore is the only one who has the young and inexperienced excuse.

The reasons are the same reasons we've seen and heard for 15 games now.

It's more than 15 games, we've had these issues on third down since Kirby was still here.

At this point, 4 DC's later, and the problem proflegating...I think there is something OC's found, and the last few years they've started taking more advantage of it on all downs.

Being that it's happened with 4 DC's, and this is blasphemy I know.... I'm starting to think it's something in Saban's defensive philosophy.

Yea, agree, and even more concerning to me is that the fundamental stuff seems to have broken down more and more each year.

It definitely seems like the advanced, pattern matching system is nearly impossible to implement with young kids in limited practice time against multiple, RPO, speed offenses.

What are you talking about?
Jeremy Pruitt’s defense was phenomenal. Kirby Smart’s defense was good every year.

Obviously the offenses in cfb have all the advantage, but you can still play RELATIVELY good defense like Georgia is playing this year. It’s not Saban.

The defenses under our 4 DCs have been noticeably different - so i dont think Saban even has that much of an impact.

Did he get wrong signal ? did he make indivdiual mistake?

Based on his performance it was a personal mistake. He took a bad angle, took out Moses and allowed the backfield to be wide open.

Coaching dictates he plays it safe, makes the tackle or pass breakup and we live to another set of downs.

You have some pretty rosy memories of the past.

Pruitt still had issues on third down and long, and while it was often elite offense, it wasn't always. It's why Clemson ran 99 plays on us the year they beat us on the last play of the game. We couldn't get off the field, ever. But we also have up a ton of random third and longs to other teams.

Kirby had the same issues on third and long his last few years. 2012 was the last year we didnt struggle on third downs at least semi-consistently. And even that year Manziel beat us partially because of plays made on third down.

Again, I think OCs have slowly been figuring this out, and have nailed it down now.

Likewise. No one wants to admit that Saban is slipping by keeping Golding around. I think Saban's ego is at fault with keeping Golding around. I think Saban thinks he can mold a good, young DC into a stud DC. I'm sure Golding knows the defense coming and going but he's lacking something in the communication department.

I think that’s the easy answer. I don’t know what will happen if we do it but I’d be willing to find out.

The last couple of years of Kirby there was a lot moaning about our 3rd down efficiency in getting off the field, and we had started seeing the "bend, don't break" mentality. Pruitt cleaned it up a lot, and has easily been our best DC.

Takeaway?

Confirmation Golding is blackmailing Saban?

The Nick Saban that didn't put up with coaches missing the team bus surely wouldn't put up with this garbage.

Heck, just stay in a base defense the entire game instead of trying to call in formations. We'd at least have a shot when the ball was snapped instead of not even being lined up.
