Matta has health problems that took him away from coaching. I wouldn't consider him.

Alright guys, after a three day weekend and some time spent with my family, I'm back at work and ready to get serious about this coaching search.
From the info that is out there, I have no clue who Byrne is even targeting. And the more I read about possible candidates, the less I know who I really want. I do still think Steve Forbes would be a great hire. It seems like we could get him if we wanted. He wouldn't be the big splash that a lot of people want, but I like him more than some of the bigger names.

Remember when Coach K missed a season at Duke due to health problems?

Matta is apparently in a different place than last year and is fully healthy.
I don't know if that means he will remain that way, which would be a concern, but most who know him are saying he's good to go if he finds what he wants.

I don’t think he will ever be fully healthy, he had a botched back surgery in 2007 that messed him all up. He can barely walk without this special back brace he has, he cant even bend over to take his own shoes off.

Right, which is why he quit coaching. He's apparently much better now, but obviously it would always be a concern.

The year off seems to have done Matta well, health-wise. He looked rejuvenated, the limp left over from his botched back surgery years ago seemed less dramatic. He had a nice tan going. Matta said he spent part of the last year in Florida. Beach time never hurts.
Physically, he looked like he could strap it on for another run at coaching, and surely he's learned some lessons in the last year about how to properly marry his health concerns with a coaching lifestyle. He never really had that opportunity for reflection while he was coaching Ohio State. It was more adapting on the fly.

Joe Goodman, Jr. (not Jeff) wrote a column this morning stating that the powers that be at UA will be pushing the new coach to hire Bucky McMillan. Also states that AU may make a push at Bucky and will be in play for Watford. Keep in mind, though, that Joe Goodman is the same guy that penned the gloriously idiotic column that said we would be better off without Collin Sexton. I also find it hard to believe that Greg Byrne would force an assistant on any new coach.

I think the big concern would be how he plans on reconciling his health and his job. Coaching at this level is a massive time and energy commitment, so if he has to half arse his job just to keep doing it at all it's not worth it for him or for us. If just dialing back his time commitment to 90% of what he was doing at OSU allows him to stay healthy and on the sidelines then it's definitely worth it for him and for us.

That rumor seems like something he saw on a forum and ran with. I highly doubt anyone with a grain of knowledge is sharing info with this hack.

Has anyone mentioned Lennie Acuff from UAH? Obviously, not as a primary target, but as a backup plan if we can't get those higher on the list. I went to UAH, and live in the Huntsville area, but honestly, I don't know a ton about him, other than he's won a lot at UAH and had some good teams.

quote:Acuff's a helluva coach! I'm amazed that he hasn't been D-1 by now....he'd need a successful stop at a D-1 school before he could be a serious candidate....I hate that this hasn't already happened.

I think the Kim Anderson at Missouri thing is about as big a red flag as there could be for successful coaches from DII/DIII going straight into the SEC.

Patches O'Houlihan coached Average Joe's Gymnasium to the Las Vegas Open World Dodgeball championship and he was in a wheelchair.

Terrific coach, but my understanding is that he has no desire to move to D1.

37mI talked to @RealPitino about rumors he’s involved for the Alabama job:
‘The only thing I can say with my broken record is that in my 30+ years as a head coach I’ve never cut a dirty deal or gave any improper benefits to any athletes -All you have to do is ask my over 30 assistants who have become head coaches or any player that has played for me . ‘

He didn't deny interest.

Lennie is an outstanding coach. I think his son is in school at UAH. Once he graduates I could see Lennie taking a bigger job. But he's kind of a family first guy and may not want a big time gig. Not that he would even be on Alabama's radar right now.

Pros of hiring Pitino: He's a coaching savant and would almost certainly have us winning 30+ games and in the Sweet 16 by year 4.
Cons of hiring Pitino: Literally everything else.
