A little social research.

What is your opinion of youtubers begging for likes, subscribers and comments? I know they need them for making money, but does the begging work for you? How often do you subscribe, like, and comment on a youtuber's materials? How many YouTube channels do you actually subscribe to? Do you feel a little insulted when they try to trick you into "Commenting below?"

I think there are maybe 8 channels I subscribe to. I don’t mind them asking. Just another ad in a world full of them. I’ll like the video if it’s well researched and done professionally. I don’t ever feel guilted or tricked lol.

Basically I do it if I feel like it and it was worth the like

So, you will like, but not necessarily subscribe. Sounds fair.

Yeah I’m only subscribing to things I watch all their releases anyway.

There’s only been one time i regretted it and unsubscribed and that was Josh Pate . I think my only subscriptions now are The College Experience, a few old comedy buddies, Oversimplified(which releases a video like once a year) and that’s about it.

Everything else I watch à la carte.

I don't subscribe to any of them.

I do pay for YouTube Premium, though.

I hate ads.

It's pretty cringe, especially when its a larger channel. I've never once asked someone to like or subscribe. I do sometimes try to bait people into commenting if I think a video might be a bust, just to help with engagement, ngl. But that's on me for making what I feel is a subpar video.

But I feel like if people enjoy your content enough, they'll subscribe on their own. I'm at nearly 45K subscribers and average around 200 new subs a day and I've never asked anyone to like or subscribe.

Are you considering starting a channel?

I’ve subscribed to about 15 but not sports related, I can pretty much catchup of Bama news here.

Content creators I watch along the lines of Billy Lane, Honest Outlaw and mainly Fabrication type content on car builds and bikes and woodworking. I’m a gear head so anything in that area and especially tools.

I’ve picked up a lot of good information and ideas and new ways to layout and plan builds. I don’t really watch TV shows or movies if I watch anything it’s what I listed of above besides Bama sports during the season.

I don't have the patience or skill to do a YouTube channel. I do a fair amount of writing, and I will publish stuff that way.

I have a collegue who is very good at hosting a you tube channel. He has good interviews and it gets a lot of engagement. He attracts people to his branch of our common ministry work; where as, I slog away in obscurity.

I do watch a lot of stuff on you tube and was wondering how the pleas strike others. They do come off as a bit cringy, but on the other hand, I understand that its a business.

I Love Rick Beato's channel, if anyone likes music and interviews with great musicians I highly recommend it.

Congratulations on the success of your channel.

Same.

To be honest, most of the Alabama channels are guys hyping info they don't have - just speculation.

I mainly subscribe to political people and gun channels - I occasionally watch Kyle Henderson

I'm opposed to social media in general and find the entire culture surrounding it absolutely vile.

While I understand the "why" of You Tube creators asking for likes and subscribes, very few do I actually subscribe to. I only subscribe to two, Anton Daniels, who comments on American culture and the craziness that's going on now and Zach Rios, who comments on the absolute insane financial decisions people make.

One of my more controversial opinions is that Ted Kaczynski was, from purely philosophical standpoint, on the right track, but just a few decades before his time. Industrialisation isn't what has damaged humanity. The digital revolution, and government's inability to respond to it appropriately, is what has damaged humanity. Social media gives the dumbest and least credible among us a far reaching platform from which they can shout down those who should be listened to. The owners of social media platforms literally control what you are exposed to. They intentionally design their platforms to be addictive to children. We have now seen the rise of "influencer" culture, which is goddamn awful in every conceivable way. Not to mention all this AI and surveillance bullshite being forced on us now. Our brains are not capable of handling this stuff. The change from existing in small, close knit hunter gatherer tribes to dwelling in towns and cities occurred over thousands of years. The change from existing in the community of your neighborhood, town, or city to being connected to a global network of people 24/7/365 occurred over a decade. Humanity needs to be less connected, and my hope is that we are rapidly approaching the modern equivalent of the backlash against industry in the early 20th century.

How is this any different than today's "traditional" media?

Therein lies another problem in today's society. We don't hold parents accountable for what they allow their children to have access to.

Social media influencers or outlets, whatever you want to call them, can design their platforms to be as addictive as crack to children.

If parents don't allow their children to access the content they won't become addicted to it. Seemed pretty simple to avoid when my kids were growing up.

ETA: My kids are 21, 20 and 18.

Traditional media is mostly billionaire owned, which is its own separate and distinct problem.

Have you ever read the Federalist Papers? One of the writers warned about the people being overly connected and factionalism arising from it. Social media does give every crazy idea a platform.

I’m torn on this. I realize social media and influencer culture are destructive BUT a big part of me also feels like “if people are this stupid to be grifted and manipulated then we’re all screwed anyway”

I hear people criticizing certain podcasters for “platforming” candidates and ideas and while I find the podcasters to be stupid and gross I don’t know if I can put the majority of the blame for the crumbling of societal intelligence on them.

Basically, if people are stupid enough to listen to and fall for this bullshite then we were already cooked.
