What's "the Red and Black"? I've never even heard of it. Also we've never played O Fortuna, so Idk who you've been listening to...
UA did a Les Mis piece a few years ago and I hated it. Here is the halftime show, I think they may have played some from the stands too.
O'Fortuna is a personal dislike of mine, lets not change the subject from the abysmal play selections of the MDB.

You actually think that I (or any of us) pick the music that we play?!?!? No! If I had my way we'd be doing what Ohio State does every week. But I don't, so I just suck it up and deal with it. Believe me, I learned that this wasn't about me a looong time ago. I do what I can.
And as far as atmosphere goes, didn't Saban JUST get on you spoiled, self centered, apathetic, pompous, self absorbed fans for leaving early? Ya'll take your own damn selves out of the game, regardless What the band does. At least we stay the entire game. What y'all gonna blame us for losses too? El. Oh. El.

Bottomline is at best you're bland/boring, at worst you're innappropriate and actually detrimental to the atmosphere.
You serve ONE purpose, and that is get the team/fans pumped up. I can promise you that no one cares about the artistic direction you guys take. Again, it is NOT about you.
Again...bitching with no actual thought as to how to improve. I'm guessing you were kicked out of the band in high school for being a dick and are taking out your anger behind a keyboard. Nice.

Deflect much? This thread is about the MDB

I've already laid it out for you....play music that's appropriate for the moment, and that will also motivate the players/fans. Very simple, there's thousands' of songs that you can choose from.
Show tunes, Love Shack, sappy romantics are what NOT to play.

Ha, riiiiiiight. I'm pretty sure a band has never kicked out anyone, I'm guessing they'll take whoever they can get. See this is what people talk about when they say you have an overblown sense of self worth, and have no idea of what your role is. Get a grip.

It's really simple, the product the MDB puts out ong gameday is abysmal, and hurts the atmosphere inside of BDS. It's been this way for a long time, and it's time for a change.

I really just wish we'd get rid of them, and step it up with something else. Not only are they failing at their job to get the fans pumped up, but they actually can take the fans out of the game.
Dude, this is fricking stupid.
And LOL at you if you need a certain type of music or production to get you fired up at an Alabama football game.

The band directors choose what we play, and we're expected to play it. End of story. No questions asked. It is what it is.
And I didn't deflect. You can't blame us if this ADHD fanbase can't sit still for a full game.

The band has received numerous comments from players saying the MDB does just that. They receive the same comments from the coaching/support staff, and from the coaches of other sports teams. Many of those other teams also invite the band to come provide their "boring gameday" stuff to their games. When I was in the MDB we played at a few softball games, baseball games, wheel chair basketball games, soccer games, tennis matches, etc. at the request of those coaches. Sarah Patterson even got them to bring a pep band to the gymnastics nation championships in Atlanta in 2012.
Almost all of what the band plays in the stands are school cheers. That's all they are allowed to play. The marketing department tells the band when they can and can't play in the stands. If you ever look over there you will notice someone (usually a GA or a drum major) is wearing a headset similar to one the coaches wear. When they are told they can play, they do. Obviously, during game play there are times they automatically play (after a first down, third down on defense, defense forces a turnover, scoring play, etc.)

They play after every single play.

Not every single, but almost. They play more than any other SEC band, by far. In 2009 we were playing over 90 times a game. That was something Terry Saban wanted to see when they came to Bama. She liked the fact that LSU had a set cheer after first downs, third down defense, etc. and worked with the marketing department and MDB. She even came to rehearsal to speak to us about it.

I sat 3 rows behind the band in Knoxville last year. They played after every. single. play.

Can we get rid of the flutes? When's the last time anyone has been able to pick out the flutes in any song?
Posted on 11/15/13 at 2:24 pm to pvilleguru
Piccolos. MDB does not march flutes.
I would suggest you listen to Yea Alabama.

Yea this week's halftime show was awesome IMO. I loved it, very appropriate for Veteran's Day
I am a Veteran and I do not approve this post! Love songs are for Valentine's day...not Veteran's day.

The flute is very prominent in our fight song.
Or something in the flute family.

Our stand songs do very little to get the crowd fired up.
I mean, outside of the fight song and Rammer Jammer, flipping "Bammy Bound" is probably our best song for crowd participation.
Georgia with "Go Georgia Bulldogs", LSU with "Chinese Bandits" after third down stops, "Hold that Tiger," and "Go Tigers" after first downs, Auburn with "Crazy Train" after third down stops, etc. are all 100x better than anything our band does in the stands during the game.
I hate it, but it's a fact.

I don't think changing the stand songs is going to change crowd participation much. Bama is a very "old school, country club" fanbase, and I doubt that changes soon.

The atmosphere at BDS has changed dramatically over the years.
And even though I don't like copying something from Ole Miss, if you want to see whether the crowd will participate just look at the "Roll Tide" after first downs.
However, our litany of stands songs that have been played since 1950 and basketcase don't get anyone wanting to be involved.
